A terrible experience

This tour was booked through ChichenItza.com but is actually given by Cancun Tours Paradise, who also operate under a number of other names. The tour was supposed to include a Deluxe bus pickup with breakfast
and bar service, an hour swim at a Cenote, a visit to a Mayan village and a Mayan buffet lunch, an hour in Valladolid and two hours at Chichen Itzá.

Pick-up was 90 minutes late. It was an old minibus. We thought we would be taken to the ‘deluxe’ tour bus nearby but were taken for an hour ride through back roads instead with no explanation. We could have thought we were being kidnapped. We were then dropped off at some unmarked, really cheap Cenote and left to figure things out for ourselve (keep in mind we are in the middle of nowhere). We were also told we had 25 minutes to shower and change, swim and change back if we wanted a swim (that was supposed to be an hour swim). The ‘guide’ then took off. I called the company and got a 20mn runaround. Thankfully, my wife was asking around and figured out the bus in the parking lot (not deluxe) was supposed to be ours. They would have left us there otherwise. The bus was dirty (old banana peel in my seat. The main guide (Benvenido) while nice, gave 95% of the tour in Spanish. We were handed the ‘breakfast’ at 11am after insisting (tepid ham and cheese sandwich on sliced white bread wrapped in a paper towel with a juice box). There was no bar service during the whole day, at all. The ‘Mayan’ ‘artisans’ sold the same Chinese made crap as everywhere else but with the ‘Made in China’ marking sanded off. The ‘Mayan’ buffet was coleslaw from a bag with no dressing, white rice, refried beans, spaghetti with ‘butter’, fairly bland chicken and ok pork. It was supposed to be an hour but took forever. We were then late to Valladolid, which meant we only got 25 minutes instead of an hour. The bus kept going back and forth on the map, waisting time all the while. We got to Chichen Itza at 3:10pm and were told we only had 1:30 (instead of 2 hours) to visit. Other people were staying at the site beyond 5pm but the guys were in a rush to get back. On the way back, we were transferred to a minibus with no suspension at Playa del Carmen and taken on a ride for another hour. We got back to our resort 90 minutes late. The butler at the resort told us we could have done better if we had booked a chauffeur for the day. Strongly not recommended.

Major lies.

Technically, this site did provide us with a tour, however they lied about all of the amenities we paid for. Air conditioned bus? Nope, a small cramped van with seating made for children was used instead. Breakfast? Nope. Unlimited drinks? Nope. The time allotted for each stop was way off as well. Don’t waste your money and please go use a real tour company. Everything was sketchy. However, we did end up getting to each location and we did not die.

Lay off the pseudoscience

The place is totally overrun by aggressive vendors yelling out “one dollar” and making jaguar noises at people. It’s like if you went to the Grand Canyon and the trails were lined with people selling stuff that didn’t even make sense everywhere you turned. Like how does a Goku statue relate to Mayan culture? It’s like a giant yard sale except the people throwing the sale aren’t really very happy to see you and just try to trick you into touching their stuff so they can scam you into overpaying for it. And it’s 3 full hours away from Cancun, it’s not remotely close. It’s like a side trip to Disney World from Miami except without Mickey Mouse. The tour we took at least was really salesy and cringey about it. Tried to sell knickknacks by spouting off pseudoscience and just plain false things about Mayan culture.

Use chichenitza.com if you want to pay twice the admission price

On 29/07/2022, we bought tickets for a visit to Chichen Itza, Mexico on what we believed was an official website (chichenitza.com). During the payment process, we were last minute re-routed to Tiqets.com.
Upon arrival at Chichen Itza, it seems that the admission price is 571 Mex Pesos per person (around 28,5 USD) whereas chichenitza.com charged 62 USD per person.
Upon complaining to chichenitza.com / tiqets.com they indicated the extra charge was for the website and the 24/7 availability and to skip the waiting line.
In reality, we just received a voucher that we had to collect at a local office in Chichen Itza. After the long waiting time at the collection desk, we had to get back into the normal waiting line. So basically, a lot of false promises by chichenitza.com / tiqets.com.
Upon getting in touch with both organizations, they refused to co-operate. So please do not trust this organization which only wants money. Note that this seems to be a Dutch organization.
We have started complaints with several institutes to stop these practices, and hope to inform the consumer too.
