I phoned in a general query regarding a previous reference from many, many years ago, this was a property managed by a different agency and taken over by DJ Alexander over the years. I requested this with zero expectations of receiving it. Leandra Brown not only managed to retrieve the details, but she did this with such efficiency and enthusiasm that you just don't often see these days. This was a short interaction with her company, but absolutely must be recognised. Thank you Leandra!

I was a tenant for over five years, originally with Braemore, who were consistently fair and professional. Around eighteen months into my tenancy, Braemore were acquired by DJ Alexander, and the decline in standards was immediate.
From that point on, DJ Alexander pushed for the maximum legal rent increase of 12% every single year, despite the Edinburgh rental market remaining broadly flat at 0–2%. There was no market justification — it was simply an automatic attempt to charge the highest amount legally possible.
When I gave notice to leave, DJ Alexander also attempted to schedule flat viewings while I was still living in the property, presenting them as if they were mandatory. For anyone reading this: you are under no legal obligation to allow viewings during your tenancy. Tenants in Scotland are entitled to peaceful enjoyment of their home, and viewings can only take place with your agreement. After seeking legal advice, I declined the viewings — and unsurprisingly, none took place.
When I moved out, despite leaving the property in exceptionally clean condition, they attempted to charge me £245 for a “professional clean.” Their own checkout report contradicted this, noting only light dust in one kitchen drawer and some fluff in the washing machine seal. The report also noted the oven required cleaning, which I fully accepted and was willing to pay for.
The remaining £195 was entirely unjustified. When challenged, DJ Alexander confirmed that the landlord had carried out the cleaning themselves, meaning no contractor was used and no cost was incurred. Yet they still attempted to claim a deduction using a quote, not an invoice, because no invoice existed.
This pattern — maximum rent increases, pressure for unnecessary viewings, and attempts to impose charges unsupported by evidence — reflects a wider issue in how DJ Alexander operate.
After five years as a reliable tenant, this was an extremely disappointing experience. I would strongly advise prospective tenants to proceed with caution.

Connor recently carried out our six-month property inspection and provided an excellent service. He arrived nice and early and was friendly, professional, and made the whole process quick and straightforward. The inspection was conducted efficiently, and Connor was very approachable and easy to talk to throughout.
He put us completely at ease and was respectful of our home, making what could have felt like a stressful appointment feel very relaxed. We've had such bad experiences in the past; it's so refreshing to see someone kind and helpful. It was clear that he genuinely cared about making sure any issues we had, big or small, were noted, and he was happy to answer any questions we had.
A credit to DJ Alexander, and we would be happy to deal with Connor again in the future. Thank you for making the process so easy!

Tried to give me keys on move in day to a dirty flat which was not cleaned prior to moving in. I refused to move in & they ‘cleaned’ it again, in a hurry to ‘help’ so it wouldn’t affect my move in date and I couldn’t claim any money back.
Speed of service didn’t last, after this may as well have phoned Santa Claus for issues would have been a quicker answer.
Window was stuck open on my first day, couldn’t close it, reported it & told not a priority as it was Easter. Couldn’t get a response from anyone even though they knew the issue. Was frozen cold in the flat for 5 days when they knew the window was stuck open, no one bothering to chase it as important or offer any other help to a single female tenant.
Told there were no mice reported as well by the previous tenant. Kept the flat immaculate & still had mice, only people that cared were the maintenance responders who told me previous tenant had moved out due to this very issue. Another sales making lie.
Had to move out due to impact DJ Alexander had on my mental health, they let me out of my contract when I threatened to involve a lawyer. Was waiting for them to release the rent they owed me for 2 months. Had to appeal a cleaning charge even though I cleaned the flat before leaving, which they hadn’t even done for me to move in. Again, legal advice threatened and they released it straight away. Not the only one either, my colleague is taking them to court as they wouldn’t refund a deposit for a burnt down flat!
Profit chasing scammers, could not care less about who they put up in the properties. So many other letting agents who actually put some effort in and care - not this one sadly.

Thanks so much to Joye (property manager) & Jennifer (tenancy team) for helping me find my new home. Joye has been a pleasure to deal with during my tenancy application. From viewings to check in, she was helpful & accommodating and a friendly face during the process. Thanks to Jennifer for all her support during the referencing stage - she kept me informed every step of the way - and was quick & efficient when I was having issues with the Goodlord software.
Since moving in, DJ Alexander & the maintenance team have been very quick at solving issues big & small in the property which I really appreciate. We’re settling in now and very grateful for a quick & relatively pain-free experience.
The only downside to the whole process has been GOODLORD - a horribly inefficient, inhuman & inutile program that is the antithesis of what it claims to do - make the rental experience easier. They really exist to protect landlords & agents (which is fair enough) and to try to sell you their commissioned utility & insurance plans. As someone who is tech savvy it was an absolute nightmare using their half-baked AI software - I can only imagine how challenging it must be for those who need have access needs or language barriers. Not only did I have to chase THEM to confirm parts of my referencing (which dragged out over 2 weeks) - I also received multiple harassing calls from them while I was moving in to sell me their insurance plans. When I finally answered I encountered a very rude & patronising staff member who spoke over me and was borderline interrogative when I refused their deals. Get in the bin.

I recently had an issue with two doors at my property, and it was handled by Property Relationship Manager Louis Steele. Throughout the process, I found Louis to be both professional and prompt in resolving the matter. He quickly sourced a competent handyman from the market, who had both doors fixed in no time. Afterwards, Louis made a point of following up with me to ensure that all the work had been completed to the high standards you’d expect from D J Alexander. I really appreciated his thoroughness and the way he kept things moving without any unnecessary back and forth.

5 of us have just found our first dream flat to rent in central Edinburgh. We were helped through this process by Natalie Cotton who made it all really easy and stress free! We would definitely recommend this Estate Agent for a smooth renting experience.

I had a good experience finding a rented property with DJ Alexander and all the staff that I dealt with were attentive, helpful and willing to make the additional effort to help me review the property remotely. Particular thanks goes to Sana Bilal, who took the trouble to shoot a video, forward it to me and then provide the follow-up needed to secure the property.
