Eovolt Afternoon Pro 20" folding

Eovolt Afternoon Pro 20" folding. £2999.00 Bought from Halfords who built it. This is a fabulous bike from the design and folding point of view since it folds up really small plus the pedals and is stable and pushable due to a wheel magnet, you push by raising the seat post and using the saddle like a handle. The video demos show you all that. The seat is even comfortable. I was thrilled with it and loved the carbon belt.
BUT what they dont tell you is that your ride depends on the seat post clip which looks great but has one diddly smaĺl screw holding it together and holding up the post and you get a diddly alum key from Halfords.
If you must fold/unfold for every use for storage like me you most likely raise and lower the seat post. After 2 short rides my seat post sank 3 inches. Terrible for your lower back and hip flexors. Same on the 3rd ride. I opened the clip that time and it was hanging off sideways. I could not tighten it although I consulted the manual etc sat on my kitchen chair for 15 mins struggling. It said tighten but not too much. That is not helpful. I realized this most certainly would reoccur since I open and close the clip every time I use plus your weight plus the battery weight is all centered there. (I weigh 154 lbs.) I lost confidence for that reason. It is a design fault or weakness.
Halfords is too far away to keep going there for adjustments. (I must add It is too heavy to lift the bike without removing the seat post/ battery but that I could live with.)
Also the other problem was the electrics worked fine at home and the battery was fully charged. I decided to start using the electrics on ride 3 but they didnt even light up and didnt work. Returned the bike to Halfords who were very nice and very understanding and refunded me, since the electrics failed to work, after 18 days and 3 short test rides. They didnt know why the electrics failed and admitted this bike was new to them. I was extremely sad to return it. So disappointed. I have not found another bike to replace it as none of them will fold small enough to fit in my small lift. Eovolt please come up with a USER FRIENDLY method of keeping the seat post stable on your next version!!!

They say none of the issues are true and they will take it up with Halfords etc (Bournemouth Holdenhurst Rd)

To clarify some things for Eovolt.
1. The sliding down seat post by 3 inches (counting by the position notches on the post) happened during my ride by millimetres so gradually I noticed it towards the end when I realized my back was not liking the ride and I seemed lower than when I started out. I corrected the height myself but the same happened on rides 2 and 3.
On the 3rd ride at the end I opened the clip and saw it had loosened so much it was hanging off sideways.) I read the manual again and looked for online instruction but I still couldnt manage to do it.
2. When I lost confidence in the clip and screw on the seat post that was what made me decide the bike was not for me and to return it. I pictured myself 7 miles from home with the wind against me and a slipped saddle post and trying to tighten it with a very small alum key and failing. Since I dont want EVER to be in that position my decision was based on that. I do think the clip is not user friendly if the seat post does slip down. I do think that if you use the clip a lot like I did it will work loose sooner or later. The screw is simply too small and its too fiddly unless you are a bike tech or very good at that sort of thing.
3. At Halfords when I walked 40 mins uphill with the bike ( since I dont own a car )the bike tech fixed the seat post clip in a jiffy with his special alum key tool and said it shouldnt happen again. I told him I wasnt confident in the clip and had decided to return the bike, so the failed electrics was not the actual reason.
4. Regarding the failed electrics that was something he would have examined later and I had already been refunded so I dont know why they failed. Also I forgot to give him the keys to the seat post which he would have needed and he rang me to ask for them so I dropped them into the store addressed to him 2 days later.
5. I would just clarify that Halfords, who ordered the bike direct from Eovolt and built it, gave me well over an hour tuition on folding/unfolding and went over the bike generally with me. I took out a 3 year care plan with them. That was the point of buying from Halfords and it is my nearest bike store and I believe the only local bike store in Bournemouth that is an Eovolt dealer. The electrics looked to be working fine and the seat post clip also fine. They told me the bike was returnable within 14 days.
I hope that is a fair account for Eovolt to consider if and when they take it up with Halfords.

Very sorry to hear this Julie.

This is more a 2 star review of the after service you received or didnt receive in this case from the retailer which is frustrating as this isnt a review page for the retailer.
I assure you that none of these are issues with the bike. Could you please inform us of which branch of Halfords you bought it from so we can take this up with them.
There are thousands of these bikes on UK roads that none suffer from this problem and if they did we would work with the retailer to fix and address them.
You havent received the after sales service we expect from our retailers.
We have over 160 Eovolt retailers nationwide who pride themselves on supporting their customers, support you havent received in this case and Im sorry for that.
You could have had the bike replaced with a new one rather than be refunded.
You could have taken the bike to Primera in Bournemouth who would have worked with us to fix these issues very quickly for you.

Initially poor service registering for guarantee

I have an evolution afternoon bike that is 11 months old. I took it back to Halfords where purchased as it has faults. E volt do not accept a Halfords receipt as proof of purchase. So now I am stuck. Best not dealing with e volt. Terrible service.

I must state that my bike guarantee is now registered. I understand the receipt requirements of E Volt, but Halfords do their best to email receipts so that they can then send a barrage of advertising. It would appear to be more of a Halfords problem by not providing customers with adequate receipts. Hence the amended review

Purchased the Afternoon model from my…

Purchased the Afternoon model from my local bike shop, about six months ago. They offered me a demo ride which convinced me this was the right bike for me. Use it to commute to work and home 5 day a week and it hasn’t let me down.
Comfortable ride, easy to fold away when I’m not using it. Great bike would definitely recommend.

Bought back in 2021 and have been…

Bought back in 2021 and have been cycling to work ever since. The bike is serving me well and is still an enjoyable ride. The battery is starting to show degradation but I carry the charger to ensure I can top it up as needed. Parts are a bit tricky to get hold of.

Unreliable and difficult to get parts for.

The bike is nice, when it works.

After having it for 6 months, the pedal snapped off while riding and it took months to get sorted. In the end, because the warranty claim took so long the bike shop had to replace it with parts from a new bike they hadn’t sold.

Now, after 1 year of owning it the clip that holds the frame together has snapped and I’m waiting for a new part. It’s currently duct taped together.

The first 6 months of owning it were great, but can’t see how it’s going to last the full 3 years I’m tied to it with the cycle to work scheme.

Present for my wife

Having purchased one of the original CITY One Retros a year or so back for myself and had been pleased with it, I had a look at the up to date range for my new wife.

She just needed something to get around the shops and riding with me locally locally on my other bike so she went for the what is now called an Afternoon. Some upgraded features and a slightly bigger wheel size

She loves it giving her a bit of help and is very impressed with the folding aspect when we stop or go inside.

Very pleased with the upgrade. Fitted at a bike store in Sevenoaks who knew their stuff

Excellent Brand

After test riding a number of different folding e bikes we went for the Eovolt Afternoon due to it having the most stable ride and we could go down canal tow paths. Super Bikes - Super Happy

Great e bike

I recently bought an Eovolt Afternoon from Damian Harris Cycles in Cardiff.Could not be more pleased with my purchase and have already done over 300 miles.I would also like to mention the excellent service and advice I received from the store.

Eovolt - 2 perfect electric bikes

Earlier this year, we purchased two matching Eovolt electric bikes after testing one, along with a few other branded ebikes that our local stockist had to test-drive. The Eovolt was the clear winner due to the design, range and weight. The delivery was extremely fast and we were updated along the way. The bikes were easy to set up and we've had many miles of hassle free bike rides, the tyres are especially good for canal paths etc.. Easy to charge and you get a good amount of miles in before needing to think about recharging. The Eovolt bikes are great quality and we would definitely recommend.

Great experience

Bought my bike from one of their suggested retailers.
They set it up for me and explained how everything worked and how to charge it and adjust everything.
It has been totally reliable and I have covered nearly 200 miles now.
Highly recomended.

I bought Eovolt Afternoon from…

I bought Eovolt Afternoon from electricrider.co.uk after having watched and read several reviews. The bike didn't get any major negative points so I thought overall this bike is probably the one to go for. I placed an order, received the bike, unboxed it and set it all up. So far so good.

After just a half the day riding it I noticed that the seat post keeps sliding downwards even though it is in locked position. I looked at ways to tighten the clasp that holds the seat post but there doesn't appear to be a way to do this.

Other issue is that the magnet that holds both sides of bike together when it is folded in, isn't strong enough and both sides don't align properly when closed. Whenever I wheel it about when in the office or at home it kind of breaks apart and both sides crash together or go everywhere. It's a very frustrating thing to deal with especially after having gone from Brompton to Eovolt, the folding mechanism is so poor it makes my experience very unpleasant. The other issue is when I'm in the lift and try to manoeuvre the bike the pedals crash into the front mudguard scratching it.

Another issue: the rubber lid for the charging port always comes undone for some odd reason. This can be an issue if caught out in the heavy rain.

And yet another issue: Gears do not always engage immediately and can sometimes take few moments to jump from one gear to the other.

If you have plenty of storage space and unlikely to use the folding mechanism very often then this bike might be a good fit for you. If you do use the folding mechanism then I would advise strongly against purchasing it. It feels half baked in many aspects.

Also I have seen a lot of other bike companies selling bikes with the identical frame and bits so my guess is this frame is made by Chinese manufacturer that then resells it to bicycle companies. Maybe Eovolt is assembled in France but that's the only differentiating factor here. For example if you have a look at E-GO Max, the frame is identical except the fact that wield seams are still present.
