Best Job for Gaming Writers.
I have worked for GameRant for a bit over three years, and my time with them has been nothing but positive. I work on the Guides and Maps teams, and I can say wholeheartedly that it’s been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s true that working for GameRant will largely be what you make of it, but if you are someone who takes initiative, is willing to learn, and functions well in a work-from-home environment, then there absolutely are amazing opportunities here.
I can also say that GameRant actually goes to great lengths to ensure all guides and articles are written by actual writers. This has been my experience since the day I started, and will continue to be how we do things going forward.
Hard, but Rewarding Work
I have worked at GameRant and Valnet related companies for a little over a year now. I have absolutely loved my experience at the company and will continue to stay for as long as they'll have me. Obviously, no freelancing job is perfect... but they have molded to my schedule and allowed me to maintain a steady income while staying home with my children.
A number of pros and cons to consider
Working at the site can be a mixed bag. On one hand, it's satisfying and engaging to write articles on topics you like and are knowledgeable about etc and the editors are generally great to work with.
However, the operations/management side can be a bit messy. More and more recently the guidelines and directions have been all over the place, with the end result of being asked to do more with less, and without compensation being accounted for the additional time and work required to meet constantly shifting standards and expectations.
Ai slop with ads
There's a lot of click bait, add ridlided, ai slop out there, but this is easily the worst I've found so far.
Terribly writing
Terribly written, click bait articles that don't get to what's mentioned in the subject until the 4th or 5th paragraph. They would fail middle school English solely on poor writing style
News that are not new
News they tell is not new at all lmao. What are your writers using internet explorer? and what are those 500 words per paragraph chatgpt quillbot paraphraser typa sht ur writers using 🤣🤣

It’s AI trash

Just avoid it. The writing isn’t even good, it reads as if it was done by a preteen so it clearly isn’t even looked at by humans before being published.

Repost Galore
GameRant is okay every now and again for game news, however, the sheer amount of drawn out articles just to say something completely useless is put of hand. Not to mention they are being posted REPEATEDLY. For example, prior to the launch of Borderlands 4, they had posted an article regarding cross save not being available, no big deal. But seeing the EXACT same article again today(9/21) roughly 2 weeks post launch is absolutely lazy and embarrassing. There are so many things related to gaming that could be covered, this shouldn't even be a thing. Clawing to be relevant by talking about mainstream games would be viable, if it wasn't the same stupid articles they've already posted about. There's more things happening with Borderlands than the fact that cross save isnt available (which isnt even as big of a deal as they make it out to be in the title and article). Grow some brain cells and actually put in some work, hell I've put more effort in this review than they have in their journalism.
AI Slop
Needed a simple answer to a question, was met with an essay of regurgitated rubbish. Repeating itself throughout the article. Obvious AI and I still didn't get the definitive answer I was looking for.
Terrible clickbait articles.
Click farming at its finest
Almost EVERY article they write nothing but clickbait and bad takes, the title will never match the context, and then the actual topic/information would be no more than a paragraph, followed or preceded by a unneeded history lesson or unrelated information. I highly doubt the people that write these articles actual play or care for the games and things they write about and just put out what gets them the most clicks.
No consistency in their articles
No consistency in their articles, you can hardly believe anything they write without having to doublecheck or test it yourself, hence making their service obsolete. Throwing claims out there in gaming is fine, but having consistenly been dissapointed with reading their articles I can only leave them a 1 star review.
I worked for Game Rant for two months and it was awful
I worked for Game Rant for two months. The whole thing is a complete scam. A total content farm. They give you little to no help as a starter. Even though my Editor promised me that I could always go to him with any questions, basically all of my questions about how to improve my articles or topics they'd like to see were completely ignored. The job was sold to me that a fair balance of assignments would be given out in the role, and then I would pitch the rest. I ended up pitching every article I published. The team was lucky to receive 10 assignments a month, and we had a team of 20+ people. All of this while they're asking everyone to individually meet 75 articles a month. In my first month, I pitched over 100 ideas and only had 35 approved. And of course, my pay was cut as a result of not meeting that quota. You end up working so many hours doing research, pitching, and proofreading for no pay. Complete waste of time. Barely worth the published work.
Dishonest and stupid
Hates its readers, spoils content
Company is only interested in pumping out high volume crap. Zero journalistic integrity.
Repeated critical spoilers in TV shows when you are using them as a source for game news - and not even in the article either. In the article title and content preview.
GameRant: FRAK YOU
Are you going to refund me the price of the show you spoiled not even with a small spoiler, but a critical plot element, for a CURRENT show?
Catherine Armecin Martin should be banned from your site.
I mean all the people involved in making a show like that which is a form of art intended to be received how the people who made it presented it, in the order they present it, with specific pace and graduated plot unravelling, all carefully crafted to take a watcher on a journey - and a clickbait careless money and attention hungry "journalist" just blurts out a key fact ruining it for a broad swath of viewers - after all the labour that everyone involved in making the show put into having it received as intended.
It's shameful and disrespectful. You should be ashamed.
Gave me game spoilers in the article…
Gave me game spoilers in the article title, and I didn't even intend to search for gamerant, it was boosted to one of the top search results on Google and it caught my eye. I'm frustrated.
