For a chocolate box that costs 26 pounds its very dissapointing. The chocolates taste cheap overly sweat and not really thought through. It made me wounder if someone was drop shipping them to make some money. They also state on their website that they pay a fair price for the beans then proove it by getting fair trade certified.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback - I'm genuinely sorry the selection wasn't to your taste.

I'd like to address a few points, as I think there may be some misunderstanding about who we are. We're not a drop-shipper - every chocolate in that box was made by our small team in Beccles, Suffolk. Our Classic Selection contains 12 different chocolates including Dubai, salted caramel, English trifle and others, all developed and hand-finished by us.

On the fair trade question - this is something we care deeply about, which is exactly why we haven't pursued certification. We've spoken directly with farmers in Uganda who've told us how the certification system actually works for smallholders: they're charged separate fees for organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance status, often taking out loans to pay them - the Farmers we spoke to became into significant debt due to the certifications costs, and the uplift on sales doesn't always cover those costs (there should really be a documentation on this at is a major issue). Certification schemes also don't account for flavour quality, which is what drives our buying decisions. We pay above market rate for beans selected on quality, which in practice supports the farmers growing the best cocoa.

I appreciate that none of this changes your experience of the chocolates themselves, and taste is personal. If you're ever in Suffolk, you'd be very welcome to visit us in Beccles - we run chocolate-making and truffle courses, and it would be lovely to show you how everything is made.

Highly Recommend – Great Product and Experience

If you are looking for extremely quality chocolates look no further than this company. The salted caramel selection is the ultimate choice. We are in love with the twelve selection , we have a box every week it’s the only choice. I can’t recommend them enough, you can order direct on their website or Amazon 5⭐️

Chocolate tastes of vinegar and tastes vile!

I don't like to leave bad reviews of small independents but my partner treated me to Harris and James 70% dark chocolate and it tastes of vinegar and is inedible. It was a set of 4 bars. I only like dark chocolate and like to try different ones but chocolate tasting of vinegar is a first for me, and indicates something went badly wrong in the bean to bar process. Furthermore, I emailed them with a batch number as I suspect this cannot be unique to these bars but a whole batch issue, and I have had zero response. So the customer service is also atrocious and would indicate they simply do not care how many vinegary tasting bars they put out there. Avoid. There are many much nicer small independent chocolate producers out there who do care. I won't be buying Harris and James again.

I’m genuinely sorry that you didn’t enjoy the chocolate and that you did not receive a response to your email in a timely manner. That is completely on us.

We have just come through an exceptionally busy period (Valentine’s, Mother’s Day preparation, and an expansion of our factory café and experience space), and with our customer service colleague on extended leave, I have been covering several roles. That explains the delay but does not excuse it, and I apologise.

Thank you for providing the batch details. I tasted bars from that same batch. This origin does naturally have bright citrus and slightly acidic fruit notes from fermentation, and there is no added acid in the recipe. That said, flavour is subjective, and what reads as lively fruit to some can understandably come across as sharp or vinegary to others.

Most importantly, you didn’t enjoy it and that matters. I have contacted you directly to offer either a full refund or a replacement from a different batch with a more rounded profile.

We care deeply about both our chocolate and our customers, and I’m sorry this experience didn’t reflect that.

A Great Morning

A great experience to celebrate my grandsons birthday. Esme was a wonderful host - knowledgeable, helpful and amusing. We all enjoyed ourselves and will certainly recommend this experience to others.

Poor quality chocolates

I received a box of Great British Puddings as a present recently.

The chocolate shell is incredibly thick - marking them immediately as cheap and low quality - and the flavours were practically nonexistent. It felt like they were trying to emulate the flavours and style of either Hotel Chocolat or Lily O'Brien and failing miserably on both counts.

Gift of 12 dessert chocs ... tasted cheap and nasty ... found out they cost £15 !! ... don't waste your money !! Stick to hotel chocolat or a few tubs of Roses !!

Probably the worst chocolate I've ever…

Probably the worst chocolate I've ever eaten. Had the Harris & James Great British Puddings and wish I hadn't. There are just 3 chocolate puddings, despite each pack containing 12, so you get 4 x each pudding. Each of the 3 puddings was a really poor representation of the pudding (Eaton Mess, Sticky Toffee and Trifle). Won't ever buy these.

Coffee like gravel

For the second time, I've been given Harris and James coffee as a present and found it to be the most insipid and flavourless coffee I've ever tasted. When the caffetiere was emptied, it was like a pile of gravel landing in the sink. The beans had barely been ground at all so no wonder no flavour came out! We ground it more ourselves after that but it's still not as flavoursome as Morrison's House Blend 3* Really poor when it's very expensive. I'd never buy it myself after x2 of the same experience.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry this missed the mark for you. Our House Blend is speciality grade coffee, light to medium roast (Great Taste 2-Star) and we grind a little coarser for cafetières than supermarket roast which is usually dark or very dark; it can look “gravelly” but should give a clean, sweet cup. If it tastes thin, try 65 g/L, water just off the boil, steep 6–7 min, press slowly, and decant immediately or go one notch finer next time. If you prefer a darker, punchier cup? Our Italian Blend (dark roast) may suit you better.

We also grind to order: add a note at checkout and we’ll grind anywhere from Turkish (very fine) to extra-coarse for cold brew, or select whole beans if you grind at home.

Ps. Quick tip: because cafetière grounds are coarse and non water soluble, it’s best not to rinse them down the sink - grounds can build up (especially with fats) and block pipes. Please pop them in the food-waste bin or compost instead.

I recently purchased Harris and James…

I recently purchased Harris and James Caramilized White chocolate and am sorry to say( despite the price tag of £4.99 for 86g) it was the most bland chocolate I’ve ever tasted. The very slightest of caramel taste . Will not purchase again. What a disappointment.

Hi Helen, thanks for giving our Caramelised White a try, and I’m really sorry it didn’t hit the mark for you.

Our caramelised white recipe was intentionally simple - just three ingredients, using finest single-origin cocoa butter, tasted milk powder to create a gentle toasted-toffee note rather than a very sweet, intense caramel flavour. It sounds like that subtle profile wasn’t to your taste, and we appreciate the honest feedback.

We retired/sold out of this bar on our online store in December 2024 (last made summer 2024) as part of a range refresh. Because caramelised white is delicate, bars that are close to or past their best-before can taste flatter than intended. If yours was short-dated or past best before that could explain the muted flavour you experienced.

Either way, we’d like to put this right. If you can share your order details and the best-before/batch code via email thankyou@harrisandjames.com , our team will sort a refund or replacement product and recommend something that better matches your taste next time.

This is one of the worse quality of so called chocolate as the taste so horrible

This is one of the worse quality and it tastes like something not really ethical like something I can not say or describe which can be perfect to say Shitttttty taste with questionable fine granules in the so called chocolate paste ( Soft chocolate inner layer and under the hard outer layer of chocolate ) as they were like two layers and the taste makes me remember something not pleasant should not be in the taste of the chocolate !!
My experience regarding two kinds of products one like little chocolates called the cafe and there was like imitation to coffee beans on the top and the other kind was the like biscuits two flavours covered with chocolate and the taste unpleasant at all and very shocking !
The taste like pharmacy pills with goat taste very bad taste !!

Either way, the texture you described definitely shouldn’t be there.

Harris and James dark chocolate

Harris and James dark chocolate.
I gota bit of 'the bright, fruity notes, subtle hints of sweet spice, and a smooth, lingering finish' but just the vaguest hint of chocolate? For a bar that costs the best part of 5quid and is not even 100g not good enough. For a chocolate lover it's on a par with supermarket own brand. Yes very disappointed.

I love your coffee in store but your…

I love your coffee in store but your ground coffee to buy in packs is never ground enough. I find it far too coarse and it never gives enough flavour. This is the case brewing on the stove as well as using a cafeteria.

It's not cheap buying coffee this way and disappointing when it's 'brown' in colour, I.e. flavourless.
Please grind the beans better!!

Hi Karl, Thank you for your kind words about our in store coffee. For at home - if you order on our website you can add a message when ordering to request it to be ground finer than our standard we will be happy to do this. Using a cafeteria our grind level works best when brewing for 6 to 7 minutes and using about 18 to 20g per 300mm of water.

Great cafe

Called into the Beccles shop today. Lovely and clean. Had a milkshake which was absolutely amazing. The chap serving was so helpful and friendly. Looking forward to another visit!

I called for two takeaway coffees £7.20…

I called for two takeaway coffees £7.20 in Holt mine was a flat white which was barely warm and nothing like a flat white more just a very milky coffee my sons was a latte which he said was nice but not very warm, think I just got the remains of his latte minus any froth,wouldn’t use again only went because the one on cross street was closed which does very good coffee

Google and your own website state the…

Google AND YOUR OWN WEBSITE state the coffee shop is open at 9:30am daily. That's not the case. On two occasions now I have turned up at Aldeburgh to find they will not be open until 10am. I do not have the time to wait 30 minutes, so my loyalty has now switched to the two magpies who actually open when they say they are going to open.

We completely understand your frustration at finding the shop closed when you expected it to be open. As a seasonal business, our opening times do vary throughout the year, and we acknowledge that they were not accurately reflected on Google and our website at the time of your visit. These have now been updated / request pending with google to help prevent this from happening again.

We’d also like to mention that we have recently opened a second shop in Aldeburgh, so even when one location is closed, the other may be open. We’re always aiming to improve our service, and your comments have highlighted a key area for us to tighten up.

Recruit better staff!

I would give a review but as we walked into the Aldeburgh shop at 4.59 with 3 people in front of us paying for ice cream, we were told that sorry we cannot serve as we are closed!
It's wonderful in this climate that a company is doing so well they can turn away a party if four just so they can leave at 5 on the dot and not 5 past their alloted working hours!
Poor show. Recruit better staff

Amazing quality chocolate and great customer service

I was delighted with the quality and taste of the chocolate shortbread, I have tried all types and my favourite are dark chocolate and chocolate orange, I have ordered three times and will keep ordering, lovely treat and present to loved ones. Also great customer service when there was a slight delay in my order. I cannot recommend high enough, well done HandJ team and keep up the great work!

Visited the new h&j cafe in beccles today
After ordering at the counter we were left waiting for 35 mins for our tea ! Not a good start , I had ordered a cheese scone advertised at £3 but was charged £3.70 apparently the butter doesn’t come with it ! What ? Should this not be advertised , after nearly an hour I approached counter again for said cheese scone and asked for it again as my carpark time would run out before i even got my food , and then found my decaf tea was more expensive than a normal tea and despite a slightly larger cup that’s it no second cup like normal tea drinkers get with their little tea pots
Disgraceful service and prices I will not be back
