I recently visited the MedStar…
I recently visited the MedStar Washington Hospital Center emergency department on July 6, 2026, seeking evaluation for severe referred pain stemming from an exposed dental nerve that was radiating into my neck. My ending diagnosis was a headache and I never stated I had just a headache. I spoke to many staff explaining that I have an exposed tooth and just came from a dental appointment, I am also experiencing my cycle, but thought to visit because of some sharp head and neck pain, which ultimately turned out to be due to the tooth.
While I went in hoping for safe and supportive care, the experience quickly turned deeply distressing due to a severe lack of communication, respect for patient autonomy, and unprofessional conduct from the staff.
During my stay, an unrequested medication was administered through my IV an hour after receiving Extra Strength Tylenol (500mg). When I voiced my concerns about how it was affecting me, the nurse, Genesis, dismissed my reaction entirely, claiming it was just a "baby-sized amount" of Benadryl and that it "should not make me feel a way." Instead of validating my distress, she simply handed me a small handheld fan and told me to "just breathe." When I told the attending physician, Dr. Randi Seidel, that I felt weird, she responded with, "Yep, I did that to you," and when I repeated myself, she said it a second time.
This completely disregarded my lived experience and bodily autonomy, causing an immediate, severe adverse reaction and acute anxiety, leaving me feeling completely unsafe and unheard in a medical setting where I was already vulnerable. For days, I felt immense brain fog on top of being a parent and having to take my child to camp the next day and function at work and school. Patients turn to the ER trusting that their boundaries will be respected and that staff will listen to how their bodies actually respond, rather than brushing off adverse effects with mockery. This visit failed on every level. I am sharing this public review to hold the staff accountable, warn others, and urge hospital management to reevaluate how they train their teams on patient consent, bedside manner, and respect. I am also pursuing this through official internal patient relations channels to ensure proper documentation and investigation.
DISGUSTING!
