I don’t usually leave reviews but wish I had read an honest one before booking and paying for two nights at £250 per night. Room was clean ish (we found old stuff under the beds) and staff were friendly on the whole but for the price we paid the spa facilities were very disappointing. And be warned they close the spa when it reaches capacity so just because you pay for your room doesn’t mean you can definitely use the spa. They don’t warn about this at point of booking. Food is mediocre. Must stress staff were very friendly. Just no luxury feeling at all or extra care and investment happening there. Don’t recommend.
Disappointing
Unable to use facilities outside of check in and check out despite a £300 per night cost. We accepted this due to the policy trying to make it fair for everyone. However, upon check in we were unable to use the facilities as they were full - health club staff even told us ‘not to bother’ waiting? Very professional? - for me this is unacceptable considering the cost of the stay being more expensive due to having these facilities on site yet can not be used at peak times? Unfair? We only managed to get 1 hour use of the facilities during our stay which was what we actually came for. Additionally when we complained at reception we were offered a £20 drinks voucher which compared to the sheer amount - for a clean but very basic apartment- seemed actually a bit insulting and 3/4 members of our party do not drink alcohol so we didn’t even spend the full amount. Additionally, A/C appeared to be provided throughout the apartment however when attempting to use - as well as using the guide QR code on the wall - it actually didn’t work which was again throughly disappointing. We had a table booked in the King’s restaurant but after the afternoon we had we actually decided to eat at the pub down the road which was beautiful and everything we wanted our stay to be. We came to stay as we were celebrating an anniversary which is such a special occasion however instead we were met with constant disappointment, frustration, stress and to be honest we felt simply just forgotten about. This is such as shame as before this I would recommend Old Thorns to anybody who would ask as well as stay myself but after this experience at the Hotel I wouldn’t stay again myself let alone recommend to a friend. There are many many other health club/hotels around Hampshire that are far better and more cost effective for what you actually get.
Nice resort. AVOID the golf course unless you like a 5 hour + round.
Booked golf package for 16 guests. Nice accommodation, food was good, alcohol was expensive. Golf, lovely course, challenging even for a low handicapper. Super fast greens. HOWEVER……It took over 5 hours to complete each round, walked off when arriving at the 17th tee to find 2 groups waiting to tee off, by then i had enough and walked off, disgusted. Tee off times are far to close to each other and whilst I appreciate the more golfers means more revenue it also means that the likes of me cannot recommend this venue and will never return,
there are much better resorts out there. AVOID if you want to complete a round in circa 4 hours.

Was due to play in a society game with 33 players but 2 of us had to pull out due to medical reasons. The club wasn’t interested and refused reimbursement although the society paid over £2000 that day. I was admitted to hospital the following day for 3 days and now await surgery. Shame on this cub who obviously put greed before the needs of others.
Ruined Christmas presents!
Booked the winter wonder package as a Christmas present, which included bed, breakfast and 3 course dinner. When we arrived we were told our booking did not include dinner. The manager Dan was very dismissive and unhelpful and basically said it was tough!Once we got told we can’t have a refund. We went to the room. Got ready for the pool and spa to be told sorry, the pool and spa is at full capacity and we cant use it and to come back later….Thank you old thorns for ruining my Xmas present
Hotel rates and discounts
The Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient.
Unfortunately we booked our 2 night October stay in April and didn't read the email received 3 days before our stay offering a50% discount until after the stay. When I contacted the hotel I was told that they would not offer me the discounted rate. Poor show if they want repeat business.
Horrible place rude and unhelpful staff…
Horrible place rude and unhelpful staff was looking to book a wedding here but the wedding team are disgraceful and very unprofessional
Ended up booking north brook park not to far from here and what a pleasant and happy experience to deal with
A muddle from start to finish…
Right from the start it was an unprofessional muddle. They had my length of stay wrong resulting in my room key not working on the second day.My tee off times where wrong. The buffet food was cold on the second night. My table was situated in the furthest corner of the dining area resulting in me staring at two 6 foot walls.I ordered a bottle of wine and despite me trying to assist the "waitress" she snapped the cork in half, and had to get someone to open another bottle.Every time an answer was needed it was "I will ask my Manager" As the golf setup was controlled by the hotel there where lots of areas that needed TLC. least of all a lot of the greens.
Total rip off and awful experience
Avoid at all cost! If I could leave zero stars I would. I attended one of their tribute nights and was disgusted! Awful food and pretty intimidating environment. Pretty confident you have to pay upfront because if you paid afterwards you would point blank refuse! Biggest joke is that they apparently have a chef!!! The food was grim, I have honestly eaten better in hospital!!
Man with a gun shooting on the golf course
My partner has a golf membership for over a year now and unfortunately the whole experience has been ruined due to an incident this evening. As we are playing a round of golf we came across a man and his son (around 13) shooting rabbits with a gun. This is happening whilst there are many people using the course. The son is holding the gun l, not sure how that legal seeing as he is clearly underage and on a golf course occupied by many of the public. To say we were all shocked to find out that old thorns plan to do nothing about this as they have a license is disgusting.

We visited the Otis’s pancake restaurant here spent £40 on food sat down to eat then got asked to leave as we were eating as apparently they were short staffed, the lady was very rude in asking us,if we had been told this when ordering we wouldn’t of spent £40 there, word of advise if u eat there around 2pm be prepared not to finish it.not even an apology.

After a long journey I went to the sports bar for supper. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad. Without doubt the worst I’ve had. Dried up chicken, cheap dressing, SOGGY croutons that looked as if they came off someone else plate.
My company is holding a conference here hence the visit. I only hope the food is better then!
Terribly run complex and terrible customer service
4 of us visited Old Thorns in summer 2021 on a 2day golf deal and we was really impressed with the course, the accommodation, the food and general running of the complex.
So much so we booked for September this year.
What a difference a year made, we was very disappointed back in September after being given a 3:30pm Tee time the 1st night that should be reserved for twilight golf not someone paying for a package!
We stood absolutely no chance in completing 18holes and could not play the last 2 holes having to walk back in the dark. And there was still 2 groups behind us !
We then went to go to dinner , only to be told we had missed our allotted time which happened to be while we were still playing golf !
We was told to return later and when we did being a carvery most of the meat/veg and even the gravy had ran out and we made do with leftovers.
I made a complaint via email to Ben Neave the Golf business manager explaining my frustration at such basic errors as tee times being booked too close to dark and booking meal times while still on the course.
It had completely ruined out experience.
He apologised and offered a complimentary round for us all.
At the time of re booking he offered us 12:40pm tee times in November , at which point I had to say will we not be back in exactly the same boat as before with the dark!
I was baffled in the circumstances.
He then offered us 11:30 for today 27th November.
This was booked back on 19th October , we had all been looking forward to today this last month.
4 of us had an hours drive to Old Thorns today, on getting our clubs out in the car park someone from the pro shop approached us to say the course was closed!
My reply was you are joking , it was that unbelievable!
I said why on earth did you not let us know ?
His reply was we sent emails out.
I checked my phone there and then absolutely no emails had been sent.
I had direct contact with Ben Neave the Golf manager so he had my email address but completely besides the point an email is no good when closing the course.
Bare minimum you should have contact numbers for each tee booking and be ringing those people asap the moment the decision is taken to close the course.
Completely understand the need to close a course sometimes , we all commented on its poor condition back in September.
But being a complex too and offering deals people will be travelling and you MUST let them know.
We then had another hours drive back home and a completely wasted Sunday morning at the expense of the incompetent running of this golf club.
Absolutely disgusted with how we have been treated on two occasions now.
It’s clear how things have deteriorated in the running of the complex now, they literally cannot even do the basics correctly.
Maybe over selling deals, dealing with too many people has finally caught up and affected the condition of the course and the quality of what they offer.
No excuses are viable , you run a golf club and these logistics are elementary!
We have decided not to go to our Xmas…
We have decided not to go to our Xmas party at Old Thorns Hotel tomorrow night due to a staff members two sons having Covid and trying to be responsible
Sadly they won’t refund a penny or change the date even though they have done this for a wedding tomorrow under the same circumstances
Does anyone know a charity that would benefit from 12 hot dinners tomorrow and that can get there ? Valued at £700
We would like to offer it to someone who can enjoy it
I will never give them my business again
Just wanted to congratulate Old Thorns…
Just wanted to congratulate Old Thorns for providing an excellent 2 days of golf and hospitality. Would especially like to mention Jennifer on reception who was a perfect example of how customer service should be provided, a real breath of fresh air. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and I will definitely be back to visit soon.
OLD THORNS OLD STORY
63% Bad Reviews is a dreadful record but let me tell you why!
We booked 3 rooms post covid lock-down (the first one) and Old Thorns cancelled it and rightly so. They asked us (via email several times) after lock-down was lifted to go online and re-book and we really did try so hard to do that only to find any dates we opted for were "not available" it appears that all dates for any "deal" aren't available up to and beyond OCTOBER 2022 yep NEXT OCTOBER... So I called them and BOOM!!! The dates actually are available in our case 7th/8th November this year ... HOWEVER..... WAIT FOR IT ....
HERE'S THE CATCH....
It suddenly balloons from £139.00 per room (as per their heavily promoted "deals") to £139.00 per person.... OUCH! Now call me what you will but this absolutely stinks of deceptive website tactics in order to manipulate and dupe customers online. The reason the bookings desk gave me on the phone .. (yer gunna love this one)................... "it's a complicated system booking online and 3 different sections have to simultaneously book the same dates at that moment of booking and unless that system works (us) the great unwashed have to pay full price (default)... So to sum up.. the online booking system for special deals aren't really available ....It's a misleading and deceptive trick.
Not worth it
Myself and my sister visited Old Thorns just for a spa day packaged which was gifted to us. Upon entering the hotel we initially though it looked very upmarket, but after some confusion over our booking things started to go downhill. At the fitness suite I was surprised we had to hand over a valuable item as a 'deposit' to secure a locker key (I gave them my car keys) which seemed very strange. The pool 'time slots' for covid precautions were very confusing - different guests being told they had different amounts of pool time. The swimming pool had bits of tissue floating around in it and the water was very cloudy. At one point to pool was full of people and then suddenly empty - the time slots made no sense. My sister attempted on several occasions to visit the sauna and steam room but kept finding it busy despite the 'one household' rule (maybe because the pool time slots were chaos). After using the pool we were perplexed by the apparent lack of private changing cubicles - just shower cubicles and a communal changing room FULL of screaming children. We then went to the spa for our treatments which they had muddled up (this was easily sorted though). My sister enjoyed her scalp massage, but my facial was awful. The lady was very sweet but she kept asking me questions which made it difficult for her to apply creams and wasnt very relaxing. She rubbed a gritty scrub all over my face (which causes micro tears in the skin and is generally ill advised by derms) without checking whether I had sensitive skin first. She then removed the grit scrub with rough towels leaving my skin feeling a bit battered. The massage part of my facial just consisted of her rubbing her hands on my temples and neck for a few minutes - it was not a proper facial massage which is often the best part of a facial. Overall, my facial was supposed to be 25 minutes, but she used up most of the time chatting. We then went to afternoon tea which was extremely disappointing. The tiny finger sandwiches were soggy, the selection of cakes were sickly and about the same quality as a cheap supermarket, and the jam with the scones was so sweet we couldn't eat it. Our pot of tea never arrived, but the waitress did ask us if we wanted drinks. I was going to ask her what happened to our tea, but as the food came very late, we couldn't be bothered to wait any longer and were relieved to leave. Overall I would not recommend the spa experience.
UK getaway
Loved our stay at the Old Thorns hotel this week! The golf course is fantastic with absolutely stunning views and really well maintained greens. The hotel staff were excellent and a big thank you to Ria at reception, who couldn't do enough for us. Our bedroom was lovely with views over the tennis courts. Excellent soundproofing in the ball room too with 3 proms going on and no sound at all! Our only nag was the fact that the rooms were very hot with no air con. However, the hotel provided two fans and this definitely helped but if you could look into air con that would be great. Otherwise a great hotel and we will be back!
Rubbish service
Rubbish service. Was lied to on the phone about leisure club closing times. Decided didn’t want to stay as the leisure club was closed but have never been able to get a refund. Customer service is terrible.
Avoid booking here
The venue moved our room booking for a wedding - in line with the wedding itself being moved. There has been no official confirmation from the hotel themselves that our room has been moved or what date it has been moved to. We have chased the hotel three times but no reply despite promises from them that someone will contact us in a few days. It has now been one month.
