A slick capital-raising machine with devastating outcomes for investors
OurCrowd presents a broad and constantly expanding range of "pre-vetted" startups, funds, private credit, private equity and other alternatives, using slick language about exclusive access and investing "with confidence."
In my view, it now looks less like selective investment management and more like a capital-raising operation for almost anything that can be packaged as a private-market opportunity.
The idea of "democratising" venture capital and allowing smaller investors into a world previously dominated by institutions sounds appealing. In my experience, it has been disastrous. It gives smaller investors access to the extreme risks, illiquidity and losses of venture capital, without the influence, information or downside protection that larger institutional investors may have.
Over more than 10 years, my experience has been devastating losses across several investments. Limited partners provide the capital, pay management and administration fees to OurCrowd, have virtually no control, and receive no meaningful protection when companies fail, later funding rounds gain priority or impressive paper valuations collapse.
OurCrowd earned its fees while I carried the real losses. Its polished marketing and highlighted success stories did not remotely match my actual experience.
I would never invest through OurCrowd again.
