1 Star is 1 too many. Absolutely disgraceful service made worse since they were purchased by Shift 4. No understanding of partnership, loyalty and no understanding of the challenges faced by small business. I was literally told to go to another provider by a Merchant Manager after questioning why they were not making more effort to support small business who have staff to pay and bills to pay rather than hold onto our funds for 5 days over easter.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Do not sign up to their bullshit advertising campaigns about the FTPOS fees! The sales people will tell you anything to sign you up. They are charging way more than what they tell you. They have now rebranded (for obvious reasons) to SHIFT4 - These people are even worse to deal with. My Review is -5 stars.

If I could give no stars I would. Our experience with smart pay has been negative unfortunately. We are a small family business and as everyone knows business isn’t easy. Smart pay took $550 out of our account without warning. We have been trying to get this money back since December with no luck so far. We keep getting fobbed off and feel like we are being lied to. We are starting to wonder if we are victim of a scam. We were told that this isn’t an Australian company which is good to know as we like to support our fellow Aussie businesses.
A SMALL BUSINESS NIGHTMARE!
Absolutely disgusted with the way Smartpay treats small businesses.
We hired three terminals about 6 months ago. While our usage was lower than expected, we continued paying the monthly rental fees in good faith. Our account manager even called to discuss usage, and I clearly explained we would be ramping up at trade shows and permanent shopping centre pop-ups. At NO point was I warned about any so-called “non-usage fee.”
Then, without proper warning, we were hit with a $399 + GST charge per terminal — over $1,300 taken straight from our account. When I questioned it, I was told an email had supposedly been sent. That is simply not good enough when you are introducing such an outrageous fee.
For a small business, this kind of unexpected debit is damaging. The lack of transparency, the failure to properly communicate the charges, and the complete absence of compassion when I called to resolve the issue is appalling.
This feels like a blatant money grab. We will be returning the terminals immediately and taking our business elsewhere. I would strongly caution other small businesses before engaging with this company.
DO NOT CHOOSE THIS COMPANY!!
Smartpay charged us $438.90 for not reaching their $990 minimum transaction, despite us paying the $38.45 monthly fee on time every month for many years. This occurred while my wife was overseas due to serious family illness and a death, which understandably affected our business operations.
The charge was made without notice or authorisation. When we contacted customer service, the response was simply, “No, we can’t help,” showing no empathy, flexibility, or willingness to offer a solution.
I contacted customer service and fully explained our situation. The first manager I spoke with submitted a refund request on our behalf; however, after more than 14 days, nothing happened. When I followed up, another manager informed me that the request had been rejected, without any notification to me.
I also explained to the second manager that I operate three businesses, all of which use Smartpay terminals, and that I have never missed or delayed a single payment. I consider myself a loyal customer and expected some understanding given the circumstances; instead, I was told that nothing could be done. I expressed my disappointment and said I would consider changing all of my terminals, to which he responded that it was my choice.
I always tell my staff to treat clients like family. Unfortunately, this experience shows that Smartpay does not share the same values or care about retaining its customers. Very disappointing!

SmartPay is second to none when it comes to the service you provide. Every aspect of of using SmartPay is so simple and effective. Staff are helpful. There is never any issues with terminal service.
Don’t fix something that’s not broke.

SmartPay is the SmartWay
I love SmartPay. It’s simple to use, no fees so it saves my business a substantial amount of $$ every month. If I could change one thing is the settlement time. I would love for it to settle same day. This would make reconciling accounts much easier, especially at the end of the month.

I would give smartpay a negative rating…
I would give smartpay a negative rating if I could. They set a certain rate for every transaction but realised with pay pass payments, even eftpos went through as mastercard. When asked the question they said they would get back to me and never did but instead kept charging $80 a month. They owed me a refund for 2 months already which I have been disputing for so long and they keep promising it will be refunded by a certain day and it never does and on too of that, they have charged us again. Incompetency at it’s peak. I would strongly advise against them.

They're a mixed bag: no fees good, machines bad
The 'no fees' is great and the help people on the phone are always pleasant to deal with however it can take a long time (and it can take a long time to get them on the phone). Sadly the bank machines are terrible!! I have gone through5 in 18 months, they're not delicate as such but glitch like crazy; everything from software freeze to the machine constantly turning off mid transaction. I have seriously considered going back to one of the big 4 however the fact that they charge the customer separately and directly so if doesn't show in my accounting has kept me with them. If they can improve the reliability of they're machines everything would be Excellent but I have missed sales lost money because of the system crashes.

As a small business, it's definitely one of the best choices I have made in recent years. I have saved so much on fees and charges without sacrificing settlement times. Money that's better in my pocket than the big fours!

I love smartpay, the charges get passed onto the customer, there is never any delays in payment etc, straight into my bank the next day, no technical issues and support there IF for some reason I need it. Highly recommended.
