From Support Group to Sales Funnel: What Happened to the Community?
I joined the “Parents of Child Models UK” group because it genuinely felt different from the rest. Open, honest, and not out to exploit new parents. It was one of the few places where people could speak freely, share real experiences, and look out for each other. But lately, something’s changed and not in a good way.
What started as a community feels more like a business now. You can sense it in how they communicate, in what they push, and in what they no longer allow.
The group’s tone used to be conversational and transparent. now it’s curated, controlled, and clearly driving towards selling something.
The comments section being turned off around the same time they started promoting their website and ebook says a lot.
I’m not against people making money from their time or knowledge, but let’s be honest most of the advice being packaged and sold was built from the community itself.
Parents have been freely contributing that information for years. Now, suddenly, it’s behind a paywall, and you’re being told you need to buy in or risk missing out. That doesn’t sit right with me.
What really pushed me over the edge, though, is the change in how dissent is handled. It used to be okay to question things. Now if you raise concerns, you’re either ignored or made to feel like you’re being negative. And that’s the issue this was supposed to be a safe space for open dialogue. If you can’t question something without being shut down, it’s no longer a community. it’s a brand.
I still think the group helped a lot of people in the beginning. But the direction it’s heading now feels more self-serving than supportive.
If you’re a new parent joining the group, just know that while there’s still good advice to be found, not everything is as community-driven as it might seem.
