I am filing a formal complaint against my therapist, Jennifer Marvin, for repeated inappropriate, unprofessional, and unethical conduct during multiple therapy sessions.
Over the course of several sessions, Jennifer Marvin engaged in behavior that was not only irrelevant to my care but also deeply inappropriate. She made repeated sexualized comments about her own body, including references to her breasts and genitals, and shared explicit details about her personal sex life. For example, she stated that her wife would not engage in sexual activity with her because of her breasts. These disclosures were unsolicited, unrelated to my treatment, and caused me significant discomfort and distress.
Additionally, Jennifer Marvin made a statement offering to physically harm my boyfriend. I found this extremely alarming and wholly inappropriate for a licensed mental health professional.
She also introduced her personal political views into our sessions, which further contributed to an unprofessional and unsafe therapeutic environment.
This pattern of behavior negatively impacted my mental health and ultimately made me feel unsafe and unable to continue care.
There were also serious issues related to administrative and professional responsibilities. At the outset of treatment, I clearly stated that I needed assistance completing short-term disability paperwork. Jennifer Marvin assured me she would handle this. However, she submitted the paperwork incorrectly, then refused to resend or correct it, and withheld my paperwork for several weeks. My case manager ultimately had to intervene.
Furthermore, I was scheduled for weekly sessions every Friday for an extended period and was charged $135 per session in addition to my insurance, which raises additional concerns about billing practices.
During a recent call, I was also informed that documentation may have been falsified, which is extremely concerning and warrants immediate investigation.
Due to the cumulative impact of these experiences, I am requesting:
A full investigation into Jennifer Marvin’s conduct
A review of all billing and documentation practices
A full refund for services rendered
I believe this conduct represents a serious violation of professional and ethical standards for mental health providers.

My experience was absolutely horrible…

My experience was absolutely horrible with a psychiatrist that was supposed to be able to prescribe me fast acting anxiety medication. I had never been so depressed and overcome with anxiety as I was when I talked to this lady. She rated me a 9.7 for depression and anxiety. She then in turn said she could not prescribe me anything fast acting. She ended up prescribing me an antidepressant that was to work in three weeks. I was pissed as I was charged $300 and my PCP could have called this in at no cost. I did not complain about this until they scheduled another appointment without my consent. They tried charging me $300 again and I did not know about this appointment then decided to charge me $135 for a missing appointment, that I never made or agreed to. This place is a huge scam! This so called psychiatrist knew how bad of shape I was in during our maybe 20 minute video call and did nothing to help me. Avoid this place like the plague. Bunch of damn scammers. I’m pretty sure the psychiatrist I paid for was not even licensed in this field. She was most likely a PCP charging psychiatrist rates.

My husband scheduled online appointments and was initially charged $10, then only 2 appointments in they charge him $298.
The 3rd scheduled appointment, his lovely counselor, signs on to the Zoom call to let him know she broke her hand and could not do the session. She sends an email to re schedule and states she will not charge for their no session.
Thriveworks charged him $72 and when I called to dispute this charge for her cancelling, they refused to give the money back because she signed onto the zoom!!!!
Clearly she did so to get the money for the session she cancelled instead of sending an email to do so.

This place is a complete SCAM!!

Privacy violations

They started sending me emails relating to scheduling details for a customer's account that had nothing to do with me. I don't even have an account with them. They included the customer's name and the therapist's name. When I notified them of this, instead of taking action immediately, they told me to email another address. I continued to receive emails about this customer's account. Honestly shocked that they could be so casual about something like this.

Incompetence & abandonment of care

In Ca if a company is established with Medicare you signed a contract to accept my Medicare. You cannot deny me because i have a secondary insurance you do not accept. Your establishment started care, then after I made a connection with my therapist after weeks abruptly terminated my treatment. This is disgusting gross negligence and I've tried to get my urgent care started but I'm transferred all over the world and I'm extremely overwhelmed and very sick. Your agents are unfamiliar with ADA accommodations and need better training. They misquote laws and refused to allow me to speak to HR or Billing in US. They refused ADA Accommodation and told me that i would not be able to schedule with my Therapist if I chose to pay and have Medicare reimburse me which is what Medicare told me is an option but apparently your agent in the Philippines knows Medicare laws better than the Medicare establishment. Absolutely ridiculous and unfair business practices.

Don't Do It! I do not recommend this website! Please believe the negative reviews, because I am so upset I didn't bother to check. The services were going well until I had a problem. Customer service is absolutely USELESS! Google had me fooled. I had a very troubling experience with this business. I signed up for couples counseling with my boyfriend. According to their policy, canceling or rescheduling an appointment with less than 48 hours notice results in a $135 fee, effectively locking clients into attending scheduled sessions with no flexibility for unforeseen life events. I had experience a same-day breakup, which I could not cancel or reschedule right? So following the appointment, I emailed their customer service requesting to have the insurance claim adjusted and billed as an individual session. The least they could do right? While supporting me through my experience right!? WRONG! The therapist, who does see individual clients, was made aware of the breakup, as my boyfriend was not in attendance. I had followed up to explain what I was hoping to resolve for the billing, and he agreed without hesitation as he wanted to keep me on as a client.
He stated that he would wait for their corporate staff to follow up with him. I like him, but not the business he is apart of. So Despite the fact that the therapist is totally fine with this, their billing staff are still proceeding with charging my insurance for a full couples session, even though they have more than enough time to update the claim.

The customer service representative gave a lame response via email, after my second attempt through their website, stating that the session was still considered “related to a couples session,” which was clearly inaccurate since the session was conducted solely for me as that is where the focus was. When I followed up with a phone call, the second customer service rep could barely speak English and gave me misinformation, stating the company would contact the therapist to update the billing, and their claims are based on what the therapist submits. I then requested a call from a Supervisor, who tried to smooth things over without actually resolving the issue.

If they could treat me this way while I was in a vulnerable emotional state, save yourself the hassle and do not expect them to genuinely care about their clients. My first email was ignored, follow-ups didn’t fix anything, and corporate staff refused to correct the claim, which feels both unethical and exploitative.

This business clearly prioritizes collecting fees over genuinely supporting clients. BEWARE – you're forced into the appt, and should ANYTHING arise, there is nothing they will do to accommodate you while you're facing an emotional matter, and you could end up paying full price for a service you didn’t fully receive as well.

Not what I expected

Video appointment which wasn't bad however when it came time to prescribe the medication things went south, I was very clear upfront that I needed a prescription refill as my doctor had retired and I was looking for them to take his place. After the appointment I was told the prescription could only be written in person and they don't have in person appointments. $400 for nothing. Go somewhere else.

I met the provider at my scheduled time…

I met the provider at my scheduled time and I was putting my box in the car and she canceled the appointment and I received $135 charge I have insurance I was gonna go through my insurance. She couldn’t wait until I put my box in the car.

Didn't communicate properly with…

Didn't communicate properly with insurance. As a result, I received constant harassment with threats dispite calling and explaining to them the situation. In addition, they illegally intended to charge my debit card for all the sections I received. I have to get rid of my debit card. Terrible!!

Avoid this company at all costs

Avoid this company at all costs. They sent claims to my insurance company with incorrect billing information so the claims were denied. My insurance company spent 2 hours on the phone with both me and Thriveworks’s advising of the required corrections for reprocessing. Once they finally resubmitted the claims, insurance paid and I sent the updated EOBs as requested. It’s been almost 3 months and I’m still calling and emailing Thriveworks to refund the almost $400.00 overpayment they incorrectly debited from my bank account without an invoice so I was completely unaware. Please do your research on this company before receiving services. I’m on a call with them holding as I’m typing this and the associate is asking how much they owe me.….WHAT??

Their issue caused me to go without my required medication

I have been using Thriveworks for over 2 years for mental health services through telehealth. I had seen my therapist every 3 months for 15 minutes to discuss my medication. This cost me $150 every 3 months just to get a prescription called in for Wellbutrin & Effexor. Thriveworks decided to stop taking my insurance and terminated their contract with my therapist (unbeknownst to me). Thriveworks cancelled my next appt without any notification or contacting me. When I called to see why my therapist cancelled, I was told they no longer accept my insurance therefore my therapist is no longer there. When I explained I needed to find another therapist but needed a week or two of my prescription called in so that I would not out, they refused to do so. Their "Manager" acted as though they could not care less. Their error caused me to go without medication that has made me physically ill for not taking it. It also causes suicidal thoughts due to the medication I am not taking because you are never supposed to stop this medication "cold turkey". Is this the type of medical provider you want?

Zero Clinical Empathy and Predatory Cancellation Fees

CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT NEEDED... I will be speaking to an attorney as this looks to be a common practice. If you are experiencing a genuine crisis, do not use Thriveworks. Their system is designed to process data, not treat human beings. I attended a virtual session on time while in severe emotional distress and operating on less than two hours of sleep. Instead of exercising basic clinical empathy or crisis de-escalation, the therapist rigidly insisted on completing a standardized intake questionnaire. When I explained that I was in crisis to answer a lengthy checklist and just needed to speak with someone, the therapist stated this is not in-patient treatment and dismissively suggested I seek inpatient care, and abruptly ended the call.

To make matters worse, Thriveworks then charged me a $125 "Cancellation/Late Fee." I was present and on time for the entire duration of the call until their clinician terminated it. When I disputed the charge, management admitted via email that they used the late fee code simply because they couldn't bill my insurance for an incomplete intake. Punishing a patient who shows up in crisis with a fraudulent cancellation fee because your clinician lacks the emotional intelligence to pivot their script is peak corporate negligence. Avoid this clinic.

Need a credit card on file to book appointments, Even having Insurance.

I went to schedule my first Therapy appointment and made an online account. I added my insurance which was accepted, and mind you it covers everything. However when I went to book an appointment with a therapist I could not move forward unless I added a credit card. Confused, I called them and I was told that it was needed in case I missed the 48 hour cancellation deadline that I would be billed $135.00. I was shocked and of course I was told this after I gave my credit card number, but thankfully my bank where the card is from blocked them from adding it as they were flagged. The lady asked if I had additional cards to add, and I said no after feeling uncomfortable, and after reading the reviews I am 100% glad I listened to my gut feeling and will stay away.

A normal cancellation fee run $25-$50, so to charge vulnerable individuals $135.00 is crazy. I'll be looking elsewhere.

Customer Service

God forbid you call the phone number of Thriveworks. The times I’ve called customer service they’re kind but they ramble on and onnnn and they do not get to the point. Most repeat their sentences and although most are knowledgeable it would be helpful if they got to the point of their statement once.

The worst possible experience.

Truly the worst possible experience for mental health care. The first provider I saw through Thriveworks completely ghosted me with no warning and left me without my medications or any further direction. The second provider I saw was completely unprofessional. The first call we had violated HIPAA on multiple levels, especially when I could hear other adults and children in the same room as her during our psychiatry call. She also included me on an email that I was clearly not supposed to be on, where she was talking poorly of me and my character.

NEVER use this company for therapy…

NEVER use this company for therapy services!!! They are a SCAM and nothing but money hungry and do not care about peoples mental well being or finances. They will charge your card weeks after an appointment without authorisation for what they say was services rendered a month ago and then try to blame your insurance company even though you don't deal with this issue with any other provider. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!
