Volair Stockbridge Village — appalling treatment of a member and a complete failure to address my complaint
I am appalled by both the behaviour I experienced at Volair Stockbridge Village and the way management subsequently handled my complaint.
The incident started over gym equipment left on the floor. Another male gym member took it upon himself to confront me and tell me what to do. Rather than addressing the situation respectfully, he spoke to me in a condescending and intimidating manner, repeatedly claiming that he could not understand me despite me speaking English. He pointed his finger at me and kicked a barbell.
His attitude made me feel as though I were some insignificant creature he could bully, intimidate and order around whenever he pleased. The sheer arrogance of behaving as though another person deserves no basic respect was deeply upsetting. I am a paying member of a gym, not somebody's punching bag or a person he can treat as inferior simply because he feels entitled to do so.
What made the situation worse was the reaction of the staff member present, who appeared to smirk and laugh rather than making me feel supported or dealing with the behaviour professionally.
I submitted a formal complaint because I expected the incident to be taken seriously. Instead, management reduced it to a disagreement over gym equipment, stated that both parties had raised their voices, concluded that there was insufficient evidence of a breach of its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion standards, and closed the case.
That response completely misses the point. This was not simply about where a piece of equipment had been left. It was about how one member chose to approach and speak to another, the intimidating behaviour that followed, and the apparent failure of staff to intervene appropriately. The fact that the man kicked a barbell deserved to be addressed, not brushed aside while the entire incident was reframed as a mutual disagreement.
I have lived in the UK for over 20 years. I have built my life here and consider this country my home. Yet this experience left me feeling like a foreigner who could be spoken down to, humiliated and treated as though she did not belong. After more than two decades in this country, I never expected to be made to feel like some insignificant outsider whose dignity did not matter. Nobody should be made to feel that they are an easy target for somebody else's aggression or that they must simply accept being treated as inferior.
And what message does management send when a member reports this kind of experience, only to receive a response that focuses on both parties raising their voices and then closes the case? It sends the message that a complaint can be dismissed without the person who raised it feeling that their actual concerns have been addressed.
A gym should not be a place where the loudest or most aggressive person gets to dictate how everyone else behaves. It should be a place where members are treated with respect and staff take responsibility when a situation becomes intimidating.
The way Volair handled my complaint has destroyed my trust in this gym. I expected professionalism, fairness and accountability. Instead, I was left feeling even more humiliated and dismissed than I had been after the original incident.
I will be taking my membership elsewhere, and I will not recommend Volair Stockbridge Village.
Management may consider this matter closed, but closing a complaint is not the same as resolving it. Your response has demonstrated a disappointing lack of understanding of why this incident was so upsetting in the first place.
I hope other potential members take my experience into account when deciding whether this is the kind of environment in which they want to spend their money.
