After sale care or the car is shocking
I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel it’s important to share my experience.
Before I even collected the car, I rang the dealership to check it was ready, and I was told it was. Based on that, I paid for two people to travel and collect it for me. When they arrived, they were told the car wasn’t actually ready, so they had to return home without it. I was left out of pocket through no fault of my own and then had to travel back myself by train a few days later to collect the car.
Within the first week of ownership, the car developed an oil leak and had to be returned to the dealership for repair. While it was away, I had to pay for temporary insurance on another vehicle. The dealership originally told us the car would be back on the Monday, but it wasn’t returned until Tuesday. We were understandably frustrated because we had been given a timescale that wasn’t met.
When the car was finally returned, the driver’s footwell and door sill were left with muddy footprints and marks despite the interior being clean when it was collected.
More than anything, seeing my car returned in that condition completely knocked my confidence in how it had been looked after while it was in the dealership’s care. When you’ve just spent £16,500 on a car, the last thing you expect is for it to come back looking like that. It naturally makes you question the level of care and attention that was taken while the vehicle was being worked on.
When I raised the issue, I was told the reason the car had been returned in that condition was because they were rushing to get it back to us and didn’t have time to look after it as they normally would. While I appreciate workshops can be busy, I don’t believe that’s an acceptable reason to return a customer’s car in a worse condition than it was received. If anything, it only further reduced my confidence in the care taken with my vehicle.
I raised this with the dealership and was initially only offered £20 towards cleaning. During a phone call, I was asked how much I wanted to resolve everything. I included all of the costs I’d incurred throughout the experience, including the money I’d lost because the car wasn’t ready when I was originally told it would be, and suggested £250 as a way of drawing a line under the matter.
Instead of trying to discuss a fair resolution, I was told that if I wasn’t happy I could simply return the car for a refund. I wasn’t trying to reject the car—I wanted to keep it and simply have the issues resolved fairly.
To be fair, the dealership did eventually reimburse me £100 for the additional insurance costs and £50 towards a local valet, which I appreciate. However, that doesn’t change the overall experience. What should have been an exciting purchase turned into a stressful one that involved repeated inconvenience, unnecessary expense, and having to chase for a resolution every step of the way.
I understand that mistakes can happen, and I wasn’t expecting perfection. What disappointed me most wasn’t the fact that there was an issue with the car—it was the way the issues were handled afterwards. Good customer service is measured by how problems are resolved, and unfortunately I didn’t feel valued as a customer throughout this process.
Based on my experience, I can’t recommend the dealership. The after-sales service fell well below the standard I expected when spending £16,500 on a vehicle.
