I ordered two Elizabeth Arden White Tea Skin Solutions Moisture Infusing Bi-Phase Toning Lotions and was surprised to find that both had a production date of 1 August 2022—almost four years old.

I contacted customer service simply to ask whether the products were still suitable to use and whether it was normal to receive skincare of this age. Instead of answering my question, I received a generic explanation about the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol (12M/24M), which only relates to how long a product can be used after it has been opened. It didn’t address the age of the products before opening or my concern about receiving such old stock.

At that point, I no longer felt confident in the purchase and decided to return both items, unopened and unused. The result was that I paid almost 60% of the product value in shipping costs alone—a significant expense for stock I hadn’t asked for and didn’t feel comfortable using.

Throughout, my genuine concern was never properly acknowledged. Rather than addressing the issue, I was later asked to update this review, without the underlying problem having been resolved.

The products may well be within the manufacturer’s recommended shelf life, but when buying premium facial skincare, I think customers reasonably expect fresher stock or, at the very least, a clear and relevant response when they raise a query—and shouldn’t be left significantly out of pocket for returning items that weren’t fit for purpose on arrival.

I chose Direct Cosmetics because I wanted to support a smaller retailer, which makes this experience all the more disappointing. Unfortunately, it has put me off ordering skincare from them again.

I was deeply disappointed with my overall experience. The customer support was unfriendly and unhelpful — basic courtesy seemed too much to ask. On top of that, the pricing is simply outrageous for what you actually get. I would not recommend this to anyone and will not be returning.
