Paid for the inital trial (99 dollars) and after that I paid 2 years 199 dollars. I actually never used the plugin to begin with. I asked for a refund and I got 90% of the last payment back, not sure why not the full... anyhow, these auto-renewals are disgusting. Of course I got emails that a renewal is due, but those all went to spam... overall I paid for nothing and these plugins are clunky as F. 2 stars, because I still got some money back..

They make you think that you get 50% off. But they hide in the small print that the discount is ONLY for the first year and there do not give refunds of renewal payments. Meaning, they try VERY HARD to make you pay DOUBLE in the upcoming years. I am very attentive about these things, so I spotted this, but it's clearly designed so that people subscribe without noticing this and get billed DOUBLE without a chance for refunds.

They used to sell extensions at a reasonable price, but they then always made them more expensive. They sold the company and everything got much worse. You can no longer buy extensions, they force you into bundles and the only bundle for selling software that makes sense (Software Licensing + Recurring Payments) costs you 600€ a year! That is insane. This was like 60€-90€ per extension back in the day, and you just bought the 2 or 3 you needed.

They have a refund policy, quoting their website:

We're excited to have you experience Easy Digital Downloads. Over the next 14 days, if Easy Digital Downloads isn’t the best fit, simply reach out! We’ll happily refund 100% of your money. No questions asked.

Here is what actually happens when you ask for a refund. Quote:

In order to consider this request for a refund, I have to ask you to remove all of the EDD paid extensions from your website.
You purchased with us, downloaded 41 of our paid extensions, and are now requesting a refund for the purchase.

"consider" excuse me what? So they will NOT just refund you "No questions asked." So you have to email them again a 2nd time and beg them to refund you and confirm that you removed their stuff! They try to guilt trip you by telling how many extensions you downloaded. I downloaded all that seemed to be useful, if I decide against using them they should just grant a refund!

Ah, and that 41 number is also a lie, I have the folder with 34 zip files here, NOT 41. I also downloaded some extensions though the actual software itself so it seems they count every download as an "extension" when it's actually just multiple downloads of the same extensions.

But it gets WORSE! After this happened, I opened a dispute with PayPal because they did not comply with their own refund policy. And then they come up with this BS:

"Hi,

We can't issue the refund on our end until the Dispute is closed. Please close the dispute, and then we can process the refund on our end."

They just have to GRANT the dispute/refund with PayPal, I do not know why they are claiming now claim they can't refund it now. Maybe It's something that does not look good for their PayPal account or something, I do not know, but they brought that on themselves with this shady behavior. I do not understand why they now not just grant it.

And do not get me started on the software itself. I have been dealing with EDD in a couple of contexts over the years. Regularly running into issue with it.

I found a bug and opened a Github issue, only to be dismissed with the false claim by their CEO that "the diff showed no changes in that area". Sending me off to their useless support that did not help me and basically said "tough luck" figuratively speaking to my issue. It later turned out that I, as a developer, was of course right, and it was indeed a bug they introduced with 3.0!

After I finished writing all this, they now finally granted it ... shame, would have been better for my nerves if they would just give it right away. This review would also not exist!

Technically functional for the most part, but bordering on being a scam.

They pretend it's free but it's not because they take your money via transaction fees.

You pay them for the "Pro" version and they pretend that that will remove the transaction fees but it doesn't - that stops as soon as you stop paying them even though they claim otherwise.

You try to stop paying them and you can't downgrade to the "free" version and receive security updates.

They also downplay their severe security deficiencies and disregard for privacy.

Good company and EDD generally works well, with good documentation to get you through everything. I have had recurring problems with the simple shipping add-on, which has been frustrating - but to be fair, tech support always get back to me and spend quite of bit of time trying to sort it out.

Would recommend, particularly if you only/mainly sell digital products.

I find the plug-in a bit buggy at times, but the support from Mihai is always spot on.

Changed their service without communicating to us and didn't want to give a refund for their bad service.

Totally dissapointing

I never go out of my way to leave a bad review but I really feel I need to, hoping others don't make the same mistake as I did. EDD sold an extension to another company leaving me to pay for what I already had. Ok fine, can happen.

Then things became more and more complicated, buggy, heavily slowing down our website, filling the DB with unnecessary options and more. We stopped using it, but found out 2 months ago they still took $299 because we forgot to cancel apparently. After some email exchange, they were unwilling to refund, because we had accidentally activated the plugin once.

If it's just one thing and they handle it well, fine. They did not though. After so many things going wrong and such bad support. I highly recommend pursuing other more modern options to sell you digital goods. We chose a SAAS platform and will never go back to EDD.

There is no anger or resentment, just disappointment. In them and even in ourselves for waiting so long to wise up and choose a better platform for our business.
