DO NOT USE Extra Space Storage. I had my items stored in a Houston location. When they informed me that they'd need to move my items to a new unit due to hurricane damage, I agreed, as I am out of state. Upon returning to the reassigned unit a 1.5 years later I noticed that the unit I had been paying for had someone else's stuff in it. The location manger was unable to track down my items and the district manager only issued me a refund for 2 months. They said I should have checked the unit after the relocation. I said that I trusted them to do their job. I wanted a refund for 3-4 months only. She wouldn't even consider it. I have been paying them monthly since 2024.
Urgent: Trying to Pay but Being Denied – Auction Imminent
I am urgently trying to resolve a past-due balance on my storage unit in St. George, Utah before it goes to auction on April 21.
I have the funds ready and called to make a payment, but was told by Zoe at the location that I cannot pay over the phone and must pay in person with cash. I currently live in Texas, making that requirement extremely difficult.
I want to be clear: I am not refusing to pay—I am actively trying to pay immediately to prevent my belongings from being auctioned. However, I am being denied any reasonable way to do so.
At this point, I am asking for immediate assistance from a district or regional manager. I need a way to make a payment remotely so I can bring my account current and avoid losing my property.
This is extremely time-sensitive, and I would appreciate urgent contact from someone who can resolve this.

Highway Robbery
So rented a space at here in january 2026 rate was $57 plus $11 insurance i check to see when next payment is do cause i pay early it says for may of 2026 $134 dollars you call the store theyy put you on hold and they never get back to you you call the 800 number they sendd you to the store so i finally get someeone one thee 800 number he tells me the rate was a promo and that im stuck with this bill of $134 its not even 6 months i thought public storage was bad this place is the worst i would not recommend this place

My storage unit, 3rd level was burglarized and over $13k in valuables were stolen. The lock was never tampered with. I discovered the unit walls don't extend to the ceiling on several units, leaving open space above that could allow someone to enter from neighboring or adjoining units. I reported it immediately and documented everything. just be aware of this potential security issue if you plan on storing your valuables and personal belongings here. according to the police their have been reports of theft at this storage facility. Its not as secure as it appears.
40-60% price increase with no notice or negotiation
They raise prices by 40-60% with little to no notice or reason and then claim that they "lowest they can do" would result in unaffordable fees. Staff often shave off access times by opening late or closing early. Insurance requirements also put you at a cost disadvantage so you are forced to use their insurance or spend a lot of time to find a viable alternative. In general, they want you to move in and be reluctant to move out so that they can charge rapidly growing fees and have lots more predatory fees waiting for what they know is too expensive. Now that I read about other customers experience with rodents and mold I also have to check for myself.

I came looking for reviews to see if others are experiencing the same issue and sure enough they are. In November of 2025 my monthly bill was 107.12 up until February. Now my bill is 203.24. Will be closing that account soon!
Absolutely terrible customer service at…
Absolutely terrible customer service at the facility. The woman at the Kona Hulikoa Drive location was combative, argumentative, and gaslighting me over a typo in my account, effectively invalidating communication between the facility and myself — despite the contract containing all my details, including credit card information, driver’s license, and phone number, all connected to the account.
The facility manager refused to update the email so communication could be properly connected, refused to send paid receipts, and refused to cancel the contract — again, because the email was incorrect.
On top of that, there have been rat urine, rodent feces, cockroaches, and other health concerns at the facility. You might as well rent from a broken vending machine than try to communicate with this woman.
Renter Beware
Renter beware! Prices will accelerate quickly. Informed that our unit suffered damage due to busted pipes and they assumed no responsibility for loss. The renter’s policy sold to us is a joke. They offered 1/3 of the value of our loss. Do not use this facility.
You don’t need Extra Space they only want your money…
I would not recommend Extra Space Storage in Elkridge, MD.
The manager, Ryan, is extremely rude and repeatedly reminds customers that he is “the manager,” as if that excuses poor customer service. The overall attitude from staff has been dismissive and unprofessional. I also learned that Ryan and another employee, Jessica, placed comments about me in their internal system that were completely inappropriate.
I attempted for weeks to pay my bill online but the system would not allow it. The month of February being shorter caused the system to push the next month forward, and it would not accept payment for the prior month online even though it could be paid in the lobby. The payment methods should function the same way, but they did not.
Instead of addressing the technical issue or the customer service concerns, the facility attempted to move forward with eviction notices. When I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, their corporate office responded only about the fees being correct and never addressed the behavior of their staff or the service issues.
The rent for my 10×10 unit increased from $120 per month to $172, which is a significant jump. I also noticed many units on my floor with red locks, which suggests other customers may be experiencing similar problems.
If you’re considering storage, you may want to look at smaller, locally owned facilities instead. In my experience they tend to treat customers with more respect and understanding.
I will be leaving this facility, but on my own terms.

I was looking for a storage unit closer to my home and found Extra Space Storage (ESS). The man who showed me the unit was great so I signed a 6 month agreement. When I called back to set up the "move in date" I got a woman who was, not great, to say the least. I set a date for a week out on a Thursday and all was set. That day it was pouring rain but I had to finish the move since the lease was up on the other unit. When I got there I found out they were closed! The Web site said they should be open, the signs on the door said they should be open and the unagreeable woman never said they would be closed. When I call the number the lady said, "Oh sorry, that is a new policy and we haven't updated our signs or Web. I also said the RestRooms were locked. She said when we are closed they are locked, and we needed to go somewhere else. Remember it was raining, hard, but we, my wife and I, drove to a McDonalds out of necessity. A few days later I went to put some more items in the unit and a very helpful and nice man was at the desk. I put some items in the unit and mentioned to the man that it was VERY dark in the unit. He suggested I buy a motion sensor light to fix the problem which I have done. Still they should have a ceiling light in each unit. As I went out I tried the bathroom and it was locked. He said that was strange and unlocked it for me. Couldn't explain why. It should have been open.
Today I went to the unit to get some items out and tried the RestRoom again. It was locked. I went to the desk and found the Unhelpful Lady there. I asked why is the RR Locked. She said it was out of order. The one time I was in there it was pristine. The entire building is only a few years old. Bottom line I don't believe her. I wonder if one of her duties is servicing the R/R and to avoid that work, she just keeps it locked. I said what about the Ladies room, she said that is for employees and we don't let customers use it. Really!
This review is for the Extra Storage Unit on 4105 George Busbee Pkwy in Kennesaw GA.
As soon as my agreement is up I will be out of there mostly do to the Lady at the Desk. She should never have a job where she interfaces with the Businesses customers.
Take my advice and stay as far away from this location as you can. There are many, many other storage units that actually treat their customers with respect and want their business.
Great customer service, very professional
Rented a unit at the Farmington, MI location for 3 years. Yes, the price increased regularly but I did not deduct any stars from the rating because EVERY storage unit company does that and they did provide advance warning. The customer service is awesome, friendly, helpful, accommodating, will work with you on late payments. I vacated today and there was mouse poop on my storage containers but again, that happens in all outdoor-access storage units. Moved to a unit closer to home, was going to go with Public Storage but their customer service is awful and they are very unprofessional and unorganized so I went to another Extra Space location in Lincoln Park, MI, and rented there. That location is great as well.

Exceptionally helpful and supportive staff await you at this Extra Space Storage facility in Iselin NJ. The lady in charge there, Sonal, is dedicated to helping the customers with all of their needs, from saving money, downsizing or upsizing, to suot their needs. From what I could see, after working on my space there for a whole week, she works tirelessly to service customers. Her employer should be completely satisfied as well, since her facility seems to have a near zero vacancy rate. I know this because I needed a new space, and they were hard to come by. Sonal is indeed a rare find in this customer service sector. She's a keeper for sure. Thanks for helping me and my family.

My bill went from $120 to $320 in a single month no warning, no explanation. When I called, they said it was in my agreement that rates could change. I asked for 30 days to move out and they threatened to auction my stuff if I didn't pay the new rate immediately. I had my kids' baby photos in there, my late mother's furniture. This company is a joke.
This company is terrible
This company is terrible. I rented a storage until last May for $110 a month, they keep jacking up the rate. Most recently they raised it to $283 a month… 10 months after it was $110. The facility is never secured. Supposedly it’s climate controlled, and parts of the building do feel air conditioned, but I’ve complained multiple times that it’s not air conditioned in the corner where my unit is- nothing has been done about it. There are gates, which are chained open and never closed. Several times I’ve had to leave because some shady characters are hanging out in the parking lot, near the doors to the building. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Moving out, to the same size until, climate controlled on 1st floor for $82 a month only 1 mile away.

My experience with the Extra Space Storage location in Vineland, NJ has been extremely concerning.
After falling behind due to financial hardship, I was notified that my unit was scheduled for lien auction on 02/26/2026. When I reviewed the auction listing photos taken by the facility after they accessed my unit, it was clear that the contents inside had been disturbed, shifted, and thrown around compared to how the unit was originally packed.
I contacted the facility in good faith to dispute the handling of my stored property and requested a postponement of the auction so I could inspect the contents before my personal belongings were permanently sold. My concerns were not acknowledged or investigated in any way. I was simply told that the only way to stop the auction was to pay the full balance of $395.02.
At this point, I have no way of knowing whether any of my personal property has been damaged or gone missing prior to the sale because I have not been allowed to inspect the unit after it was accessed by the facility.
Customers trust storage companies to safeguard their belongings, even during the lien process. Being told that my only option is to pay in full after my property appears to have been mishandled — without any effort to address the condition of the contents — is unacceptable.
I have before-and-after photographic documentation and have been forced to seek further action to prevent the sale of my personal property before I am able to determine its condition.
I received a rate10% rate increase…
I received a rate10% rate increase after 2 months and have received another 10% rate increase after an additional 6 months. The letter gives me 30 days notice but since i am out of the country I don't have a resolution. This is clearly a private equity company operating on a bait and switch. They offer a rate and as soon as your in you are going to receive constant rate increases with their explanation being that they are raising rates due to market conditions. I would recommend not to rent storage from this company

I called the Extra Space Storage Unit in South Holland Illinois and tried to inquire about how many times, have they, increased the unit rent over a year or 6 month period. I asked the manager who is a guy if he can provide those statistics. He eluded to everything else, but answer me.
They have a promotion going on now, that is very persuasive to make you move in. But I think that these are predatory practices. And his reply was that you can always move out after a month, if I you are not satisfied. Like what?? Most people, at-least need to rent out the space for 6-12 months. So please play those mind games on someone else.
I think that storage units should be required to give customers these statistics about their renting history or practices for the last 6 months or year. This helps the customers make an informed decision if they want to sign a rental agreement with them.
Prices have shot through the roof on everything and no one has time for these games or bad business practices.
2 year rental lost it all due to theft.
I rented 2 units from 2023 to 2026 my experience was nothing more than a nightmare. I thought my belongings were safe during my family housing transitions. All of furniture was damaged every box or tote was opened and just about everything of value was stolen from us broken or completely ruined . I was never told there was a door access in the back of my unit that needed a key. I found out an employee had a key to my unit so it was an inside job of burglary. I found my washer and dryer outside my unit and all of our Christmas gifts stolen. The staff didn't notify me of the theft i just happened to go to it. I confronted the staff and got nothing. The insurance company will not respond. My units were broken into several times. My mom had a unit we found her belongings in the back of storage and the unit was open. It took so long for them to repair and close her unit. They only offered reimburstment for 1 month rent.
