Highly recommend

I was charged for trying

I have a floating shelf in the bathroom that has dropped by 1 inch, they didn’t manage to fix the problem in securing the shelf, but still charged me the full 30 min fee of £51. When I the day after emailed enquiring why I was charged for a service that they didn’t fulfil the reply I received back was, and I quote
“So if you read what you said in the first email, you stated ******* tried fixing the shelf for 30 mins? This is why we are charging 30 mins”.
Not only did I not receive a single apology, but a rude and dismissive email back. In fact the person over email had the audacity to say it was not the “right shelf for that type of wall”.
I am not a professional handyman, which is why I booked them, and if the shelf cannot be repaired I understand that, what I don’t understand is how they can charge for trying.
The consumer act of 2015 clearly states “service should be performed with reasonable care and skill” and the following remedies are statuary rights should a contract not be met “right to repeat performance” and “right to price reduction”
Not only was I not offered any of the above, in fact they simply chose to ignore my last email when I asked “So you charge for trying?”
Worst customer service I have come across in a very long time.

We are very sorry to have left you wanting to write a review like this following our visit to you. This arose out of a difficult judgement call which occasionally we have to make. Regarding the floating shelf in the bathroom, our tradesman did spend considerable time assessing it, but concluded that, as it lacked conventional fixings or anchors, it could only be removed from the tiled wall by force which would almost certainly have caused damage to the tiles, making a bad situation worse and necessitating costly repair. There will no doubt be mixed views among those reading your review and our response to it as to whether or not it was fair to charge you at all for this visit. In fact the visit lasted almost an hour, but the tradesman did reduce his charge to the 30 minute minimum charge on the basis that the work could not be done. He travelled to your property ready and willing to carry out the prescribed tasks but, after lengthy evaluation, was not prepared to cause collateral damage (for which he would likely have been held liable) by carrying out that particular task, which arguably does demonstrate "reasonable care and skill" as defined by the Consumer Act 2015. Had he gone ahead and smashed it off the wall, we would doubtless be in a worse place. While of course our customers pay for results, there should surely be some value placed on the effort, time and experience of the tradesman carrying out the task. Someone less skilled and experienced may well have had less regard for the risks involved. We are very sorry that you were so dissatisfied with the service and hope you at least accept that our overriding instinct was not to damage your property.

Great service, fair price, quick turnaround

I had a problem with a broken plug and socket that needed immediate attention. The admin team was excellent at quickly finding me an eletrician who came in to do the job the same day, at a fair price for the turnaround and service. Very nice and friendly team as well, highly recommend.

First rate, my new go-to for all work required

An excellent, first-rate experience with James (electrician) and Radek & Russell (both handy men) who helped with some modifications to our newbuild flat. We had new tv connection panels installed and moved from their original location; power supply safely pulled through into the bathrooms for lighted mirrors and bedside lights powered and mounted, with all walls/ceilings made new. The communication with Lucie from beginning-to-end was excellent, James, Radek and Russell were very pleasant, prompt, worked efficiently to a high quality and cleaned/tidied up after themselves. And all for a very reasonable price.

Radek did an amazing job fixing our wooden flooring…

Radek came to fix some wooden flooring, following a leak. The task was complicated as the flooring impacted was in the middle of the floor. He did an absolutely fabulous job, installing the replacement planks. You can't see there was an issue - and everything was done and cleared up in the time originally quoted.

Excellent experience with both Richard…

Excellent experience with both Richard and Russell on multiple visits and will be booking all future jobs in with handy squad. The operations team is also super helpful, responsive and accommodating. Very much recommend for any odd jobs that inevitably spring up when moving into a new home.

Electrical repairs

James replaced an extractor fan and repaired a dimmer switch. He did a great job and I’m very happy with the work. The booking process was efficient and I’ll use HandySquad again.

I have used Handy Squad in the past and they always do a good job. Jonathan came before Christmas and was hardworking and efficient and was able to turn his hand to everything. He did a particularly good job with the electrics.

My go to place for anything handy!

I have now used the services of The Handy Squad 3 times (electrician and handyman) and about to book the 4th time for a decorator. I have been amazed by the overall service - my query was answered immediately, my queries discussed with me so that a time could be recommended. Each time someone was sent out almost immediately and the work was done to time and to a really high standard and what I believe was a very reasonable price. I was only every charged for the time that was actually taken to carry out the work even when more time had been allocated. Have recommended to friends and family and will definitely be my go to company when I am next in need of any of the services they provide.

Superb service from The Handy Squad - impressive

Just had superb service from The Handy Squad - swiftly arranged appointment, turned up promptly, various jobs which they assessed on site and fixed quickly and with good quality workmanship. It’s great that companies like this can adapt so well to operating compliant with Covid regulations - as my Handy Squad operator did immediately upon arrival. Would definitely use again.

Incompetent, expensive and inconsiderate. NOT COVID SAFE

It was pretty expensive for a very minor job that only took a moment ultimately, but took so much longer because they had not checked about the tools. I was made to pay in advance but the job was almost not completed because they didn't have a long enough extension lead - in trying to pull mine further they disconnected my internet and cut both me and my housemate off the work calls we were currently on. The guy arrived late in the first place, and he also did not distance or wear a mask even when entering my house. The only positive was how quickly they were able to make the appointment. I would not use them again.

Nobody likes to receive a negative review, but yours has addressed a very serious issue to which we are glad you alerted us. We have since had a private telephone conversation with you to discuss the points you have raised and hope that we have been able to give you some reassurance. As this remains a public complaint, though, we should explain further. To begin with the payment aspect, we do ask for a deferred payment at the time of booking for the estimated cost of works. This is a holding amount and no money actually leaves your bank account until after the work is completed. We are sometimes asked to carry out very small jobs, but the smallest unit of work we can viably offer is 30 minutes of handyman time. Many providers will have 1 hour as their minimum booking. However, this assignment was indeed poorly executed, starting with our operative being held up at a previous job and arriving late for you. He had also brought only 40m of extension cable with him when he in fact needed 60m. The most serious aspect by far is his failure to observe our protection protocols. This sort of aberration cannot be tolerated at a time like this, whether through haste or oversight. This tradesmen, like all of our team, is equipped with PPE and failure to use it will result in strong sanctions - even removal from our service. As a result of this incident, we have reinforced our message to all operatives as to their obligation to use PPE and the severe penalties for any failure to do so. We are extremely sorry that we let you down on this occasion.

Cost went from £78 to £90 to £139 for the same work.

Needed 2 bird boxes and 2 bat boxes (similar to bird boxes) mounted on outside of house, which is a relatively small job. The Handy Squad quoted £78, but when I went to book it, it was £90, so I cancelled as that was a bit much for a relatively small job, and I ought to do it myself. Nevertheless Jono turned up, very nice and friendly and had all the tools. He put up the bat boxes in 15 minutes. Then went round the back, and he put up the bird boxes, which took less than 15 minutes. I phoned up to pay later that day, and and spoke to Lucy who said it had taken an hour and a half, and I had to pay £139. I said it had not taken 1.5 hours, and I said to go and ask Jono. They said they could check how long his motorbike had been at our house, and I said that was good. I phoned up next day, expecting it to be sorted, and it was still the same. Phoned up the next day, and it was down to £114. I still said this is too much, and started writing to Consumer Protection, and let The Handy Squad know that I was writing to them. I said I was happy to pay £78 but no more, as that was all I had agreed to. I sent a second warning that I was contacting Consumer Protection. They dropped to £78, and I paid. They did not explain how they had made a mistake of thinking it was 1.5 hours. Horrible experience, unfortunately. I am very envious that everyone else has had a good experience with them, particularly as I liked Jono!

We are very sorry that you have been left unhappy with our service and would be the first to admit that we made mistakes. We are always careful to explain at the time of booking that our estimates are just that - estimates - based on the information we are given and what we would regard as typical job times. As our pricing is based on time taken to complete a job, the eventual charge will be for the amount of time actually taken, rather than that originally estimated, be it more or often less. Of course, for larger projects, we will provide a fixed price quotation which is only subject to change by mutual agreement. After studying records of all our communications as well as the tracking data from our tradesman's vehicle, it did indeed appear that he had spent more than an hour at your property which would imply a charge for one and a half hours. However, you are quite correct that you had cancelled your booking - something that was not correctly logged by the office team - which resulted in our visiting you unexpectedly. For this oversight, we were happy to drop the final half hour of charge, albeit that the work was completed to your satisfaction. We are very sorry that you have been left with such a negative feeling towards our company and will do all we can to ensure that something like this never happens again.
