Hertz - Austin - Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) Avis 

Picking up the rental car was super easy. The vehicle worked great. No performance issues. The only issue was inside the car. The driver's seat had a huge stain on it that should not have been there. I looked at other vehicles but they all had similar interior issues. Not a big deal but it should be addressed for Hertz's rental fleet.

Price for rental was good. Courteous staff. Great vehicles.

After arriving to the airport at roughly 1 AM, went to Hertz contact list pick up and see my name have been flagged to see the counter. It appeared that there were hardly any cars left, but instead of turning me away when I booked a manager’s special, they upgraded me to a premium level SUV. Extremely happy with the car no issues at all on pick up or drop off.

We arrived very late to the airport but the customer service was very nice and the entire experience was seamless.

Ease at pick up and drop off

My recent experience with Hertz was extremely disappointing, and I’m seriously reconsidering ever renting from them again.

I had a family trip planned for the fall vacation and specifically booked a 7-seat AWD vehicle. I went to the Austin Airport location expecting a better selection of vehicles, only to find very limited availability. Despite having other vehicles on the lot, Hertz refused to offer an upgrade and forced me to downgrade to a 5-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee.

To make matters worse, I was charged more than my original booking amount despite receiving a smaller vehicle. Nobody mentioned this or explained the additional charge. I had to discover it myself by checking the email update.

Things went downhill from there. The vehicle developed mechanical issues, forcing me to exchange it at another location. After a two-hour wait, I was given an even smaller SUV that barely accommodated our family and luggage.

The manager suggested I exchange it at the next major airport in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After driving five hours out of our way, I was refused assistance despite vehicles being available. I explained my situation, but the staff simply wouldn’t help. I also contacted other Hertz locations along the way, but they either couldn’t help or didn’t answer. Customer service was equally useless, telling me they couldn’t do anything because everything depended on the local location manager.

Here’s the biggest joke: I have Hertz Presidential Circle status, the highest tier in their loyalty program, and it counted for absolutely nothing. When I genuinely needed help, neither the airport staff nor customer service cared about my loyalty or the situation I was in.

What is the point of a loyalty program if it offers no meaningful support when things go wrong? Hertz seems happy to have loyal customers until those customers actually need assistance.

Between poor vehicle availability, unexplained extra charges, vehicle reliability issues, and the complete lack of coordination between locations and customer service, this experience was unacceptable.

This isn’t my first bad experience with Hertz, but it may be my last. I expected much better from a company that supposedly values customer loyalty.
