Terrible product and awful customer…
Terrible product and awful customer service. I repainted my kitchen, and after lots of research, I decided to use Rustins Extra Touch Quick Dry Polyurethane Varnish in clear satin. In less than 3 months, the countertops had started to yellow, as well as a huge patch that's actually under the freezer. I contacted Rustin's Technical department, explaining how I prepared the surfaces and asked for advice on what I could do. I didn't complain, I asked for insight. This is an extract from the reply, in which they say "it's not a varnish to use over paint or light colours". Nowhere on the tin does it say any of this.
"To date yours is the sole complaint received by Rustins for any reason since the time this material was introduced into the retail supply chain. Since we can reasonably assume a statistically significant proportion of this varnish has been used without apparent issues within the last year it should be a fairly safe assumption our product is functioning correctly. In this regard application of clear coats as a protective film over white or light-coloured substrates is not recommended. This is due to basic optical physics where internal light refraction of incident light through a transparent layer causes visible yellowing, which is aggravated by any inherent colour of said clear topcoat and/or high coating thickness. Please note our product is not sold as a floor coating, nor as a paint over-varnish." You will notice the tone that basically says "your the only one, it's you that's stupid and how dare you suggest it's our product!
Rustins medium oak satin wood stain (never)
Horrendous product. I recently purchased the above product to use on a boat fitout. I coated one of the cabinets I had built, stood back and was horrified at how orange the product dried. I contacted the company and was told it was well within their tolerances as a mid oak. Despite the fact I sent a picture showing the colour difference from a previous project I had used it on showing the stark difference. I would never recommend this product after my recent experience. It cost me over 20 quid for the stain and then a lot of time and wood to rebuild the ruined cabinet! 😒 terrible experience.
Rustins Plastic Coating
AVOID this product. Only works on new untreated wood (not guaranteed even then). It will not work on your furniture. NEVER use this on antique furniture e.g. table tops. No amount of sanding and prepping prior to applying Rustins Plastic Coating will do. This stuff is rubbish. You will have to re-strip all the way back to the wood to get rid of the mess it makes. You will lose the grain on your furniture and it will look like tarmac. The instructions are completely muddled and contradictory. Wait til its dry/don't wait til its dry. Sand it after 1 hour or 2 hours but not the next day unless you are in a warm space.......Ridiculous. And don't forget humidity etc.
Avoid this like the plague
Avoid this like the plague. I had a beautiful barewood floor and I used this - did everything to the letter.
As someone else said, which unfortunately I read after I used it, it is more of a varnish than an oil.
I emailed them for help and they didn’t even have the courtesy to respond.
I now have to pay someone to sand the floor and restore it to its natural beauty. DONT TOUCH THIS PRODUCT
Doesn't remove rings
It may be a nice polish but it certainly isn't a ring remover
Rustins Strypit
Rustins Strypit
Useless. Left it for 10 minutes. Didn’t even touch the paint. So I left it on for twice the time. Still nothing. Didn’t soften or blister. Instructions say to apply even more after the paint softens or blisters - it didn’t! Dreadful product. Misleading instructions. Not fit for purpose.
Quick drying Primer and Undercoat
Quick drying Primer and Undercoat. First use of a Rustine paint.
I was impressed by the tin, real metal and the lid stayed in shape as i prised it off, refit well after painting. Virtually odourless.
A great gloopyness after stiring that made easy work of loading the brush and preventing drips. Fantastic stickyness for application, not fussy about the brush used. Good coverage, easy to use.
Cleaned from brush and hands easy.
Excellent outdoor products
I've bee using Rustins outdoor stain for a number of garden benches ive been renovating and have been very impressed. It's quite thin, but coverage is excellent and dries quickly . The outdoor metal paint I have used is also very good. A relatively thick product which has very good coverage . All can be cleaned with water which is great
I used Ronseal floor oil before
I used Ronseal floor oil in the past for three rooms. Doing the next two and discovered they no longer sell it so... Apart from taking 8 times longer to dry, Ronseal, 30 minutes with 2hrs between coast Rustins no drying time specified but 4 to 8hrs between coats. The tin is impossible to open! Looked like a pouring spout like on a car oil can. Tried using the tab on the cap to pull it up. Firstly too much vacuum to work, but the cap ripped the thread covering me and my work surface in oil. Ruined my glasses and medilert bracelet, covered my top and wasted a fair portion of available product. Replaced the cap to clean up. Tried removing cap to then pull up spout with pliers, at the risk of damaging the thread beyond use, gave up. So pouring this product is messy and wasteful. I wish I knew why Ronseal stopped their version. I knew what I was dealing with. Got up early, got three coats done in a day, four years since I did the first room and still looks fresh. Lets jope for a good outcome at leastThis will take me AT LEAST two days depending on damage, I'm doing my bathroom and landing, I have three cats. 30 minutes drying time is manageable, 4 to 8 hrs? Challenging.
Beware!
Beware - Use at your peril!
Ordered ‘Light Grey’ when it arrived it was virtually white!
Contacted Rustins who said:
‘Our labels are printed externally in reels of many thousands of impressions, usually for product yet to be made and filled. The colour swatches on said labels are for illustrative purposes only and this is stated accordingly.’
Now, there is ‘close’ and there is ‘way off’. They say it is ‘within their tolerances’. All I can say is they must have very, very, wide tolerances!
What is the point of putting a colour sample label on a tin when the contents are nowhere near that colour.
So, any colour you order, is basically pot luck.
They have refused to offer any solution and said ‘this happens’.
What a disgrace of a company. They do not care about their customers.
I can't believe this is so bad - but it is
I can't believe a company - Rustins - sold by all the big and small hardware shops sells varnish that is so useless, bad, pointless to use, a waste of time and absolutely NOT what is says on the tin and now I have to remove it all and start again with a proper varnish. It says it is durable and I can easily scrape off all 3 coats with one scrape of my fingernail! It is Rustins Quick Dry Polyurethane Varnish. Dries to re-coatable in 2 hours. I gave each coat 12 hours to dry. This so-called varnish melts under a mug of hot tea! Sellotape pulls it off! My fingernail scrapes it off! The worst DIY product I have ever used.
Rustins Metal Lacquer
I have a narrowboat with the odd bit of brass around it and I got it into my head to polish it. This is not something that’s going to happen regularly (or possibly ever again), so I want it to last. I went out of my way to get Rustins metal lacquer because it’s recommended for brass, but I’m severely disappointed by the results.
I haven’t even put the brass things back outside yet – it’s the strength of the product that’s the problem. I’ve been pouring a little at a time into a bottle lid and, even though the dried product in there will be much thicker than the two coats on my brass, I can scratch it easily with a finger nail - I mean, super easily. I will have to overcoat the metal lacquer with another varnish to protect that.
If your brass is going to be sitting out of the way and never getting touched by anything, this may be the product for you. If it’s going to be handled at all, don’t bother.
Rustins "Oven Mate" completely inneffective.
Tried Rustins "Oven Mate" spray on the inside glass of an oven door. Followed instuctions precisely - spray, leave for 30 mins then "wipe clean". Absolutely no impact whatsoever on the grease. Soap and warm water actually worked better. Apparently it contains "non-ionic, amphoteric surfactants". Not recommended.
Liquid Gold furniture polish supplied OK
Ordered some Liquid Gold furniture polish (for otherwise untreated interior wood). Best product for the job, which I have been using for years, but not everyone stocks it. Rustins provided it at a good price and delivered promptly.
The only glitch as far as I was concerned was that I got a Worldpay receipt which named Rustins but did not specify the contents of the order. No order confirmation email was received from Rustins.
A month later and when trying to match up the receipt against orders, I had great difficulty recalling what were the goods concerned (that I had actually received) so worried unnecessarily that Rustins might have diddled me.
Waste of money and time.
Waste of money and time.
Note the company do not care as they score 100% 1* or less on Trustpilot and do not respond
I bought their buttetcup ( yellow) which works out at £24 a litre
Without exaggeration it is like using milk to paint something white. It is opaque and so far I have applied 3 coats on well prepared and primed surfaces. Still meeds more and Yes I did stir it!!
I wish i had read the reviews before buying
Total waste of money amd time
Purchased 2 1/2 litres of Rustins floor…
Purchased 2 1/2 litres of Rustins floor varnish light oak.
Applied to a newly untreated floor boards. The result was nothing like light oak it was more like mahogany the floor is now red/orange. Approached Rustins customer service who asked for the batch number who then found no issues with the product, But hey ho I have a red/orange floor and they say that there is no issue with their product! Oh it must be me then who is colour blind.
My advice to anyone considering purchasing Rustins products is DO NOT you will regret it I promise you that you will. Incidentally before I purchased I asked them if they manufactured tester sample pots but they do not. Now I know why.... they know that their products are unreliable and misleading. Just avoid them all together.
RUSTINS ABSOLUTELY USELESS
Bought some Rustins outdoor wood stain satin Dark Oak to match in with some old oak beams and its absolutely useless
After 4 coats the wood is a shiny red colour nothing like on the tin, and definitely not dark oak
its not even cheap i thought i was buying a good brand, Never again ABSOLUTELY USELESS
Batch number 0230238, bought from Toolstation 29/05/2023

After having 2 tractor rear wheels sand blasted back to bare metal and buying 2 x1 ltr tins of anti corrosive grey primer for metal from tool station then painting the wheels to watch them rust infront of my eyes.even before I finish painting them
Tool station refunded me on return of the paint with 1st class customer service
But after speaking to rustins on the phone about this problem and the extra cost of having the wheels reblasted ,I was fobbed off with a load of nonsense by there customer services
What a bunch of R soles
Rustins gloss black
Rustins gloss black
It’s a complete sham it’s not gloss it’s satin finish , i followed the instructions and wore gloves so decided to contacted Rustins
They compared the batch to their samples batches and tested the quality said it was in the range of a gloss product
No Sorry to hear that !! Rubbish it’s satin finish , here’s my next problem a got some on my skin
Didn’t feel a thing for two hours only when I saw the paint on my knee did I try to remove it with water as it is a water base paint , the outer skin fell off blood everywhere leaving a open patch on my leg this paint is dangerous and should be labelled as such ., not keep away from skin
But it’s a irritant and should treated with care.
Rip-off Rustins... I will never touch a Rustins product again.
I purchases a tin of what Rustins described as aluminium wood primer. Every tradesman with experience knows that aluminium wood primer looks like bright metallic aluminium. Not this stuff! I could not detect the slightest hint of anything metallic in it (including in the bottom of the tin, where it would tend to settle). By all accounts, it appears to be cheap, grey-pigmented primer. Of course, having opened the tin, I can't get my money back. I've been taken for a ride, and will never buy anything from Rustins again as long as I live.
