Barrister Cheryl Thornley was contracted very late in the day when matters had come to a stalemate in my financial remedy case that was dragging on for over two years. She tackled things head on and was thorough in bringing herself up to speed with the issues of concern, discussing them at length and raising all legal implications. Barrister Thornley demonstrated her professional acumen in court and secured the Judge’s goodwill and cooperation in extending the allotted time in court to allow for more negotiation. I am writing this review to share my experience with barrister Philip Bowen, a former police officer who now practises in family financial remedy work. I instructed him for my final financial remedy hearing, relying on his professional profile and the extensive experience he advertises. Unfortunately, the representation I received did not reflect the level of expertise and confidence he projected before the hearing. The service delivered did not match what was promised, and this mismatch left me feeling misled about the level of expertise I was paying for.
From the outset, I did not feel properly prepared or advised. Several key issues were not clearly identified, raised, or challenged, including:
• the distinction between pension assets and capital assets
• the treatment of non matrimonial savings
• inconsistencies in the respondent’s financial disclosure
During the hearing, Mr Bowen adopted what felt like a passive, almost neutral observer stance. The judge later remarked that the other party was “barely challenged, if at all,” which reflected exactly what I experienced. I had expected active advocacy, not silence.
He also chose not to pursue an issue involving gold and jewellery, despite its personal and financial importance to me. This decision was made without consulting me, leaving me feeling excluded from my own case.
When the judge requested written submissions due to time constraints, the shortcomings became even clearer. I was extremely disappointed by the quality of Mr Bowen’s written submissions, which were brief, superficial, lacked structure, and failed to set out the key arguments of my case. At the handing down of judgment, the judge described them as “very brave,” which spoke volumes. In contrast, the other side’s submission was detailed and persuasive, highlighting a clear imbalance in advocacy.
I had expected him to present my circumstances clearly and help the judge understand my position. He made no attempt to do this. His advocacy was not forceful, and his written submissions felt more damaging than helpful.
At the end of the hearing, I also noticed behaviour that concerned me. Mr Bowen became unusually focused on ensuring that all documents, including the E1, were hand signed immediately. He took it upon himself to coordinate this, even though neither the judge nor the other party appeared concerned. At a moment when I expected guidance on the outcome and next steps, his attention was directed towards administrative formalities. The pattern of behaviour — passive advocacy, poor preparation, inability to advise, fixation on procedural safety, and casual manner — points to limited capability and low confidence in contested financial remedy work. He appeared to be more concerned with protecting himself than representing me.
The outcome has had a serious negative impact on my housing and retirement position. I left the process feeling that essential arguments were never properly put before the court and that opportunities to correct errors were missed.
My concern is simply that the representation I received was delivered without care or attention. His approach throughout was cold, casual and indifferent, and he arrived at the hearing unprepared despite charging £3,000 for a single day, plus £1,000 for written submissions. Communication was poor, advice was limited, and at times it felt as though he was doing something for free rather than providing a paid professional service. It is necessary to protect members of the public from this level of inadequate representation, especially when people rely on platforms and professional profiles to make informed decisions about legal support.
His manner also appeared casual and unprofessional in dealings with the other party. Their solicitor addressed correspondence formally (“Dear Sirs”), while he responded with “Hi Louise,” which was surprising and inappropriate in the context of a serious and highly contested case.
I later discovered that other clients had raised similar concerns. I wish I had seen those reviews earlier. It is only fair that the public has access to a full and balanced picture of a professional’s performance so they can make informed decisions.

I’m incredibly grateful to The Barrister Group for instructing Ralph McMullan to represent me. My case involved complex financial proceedings alongside domestic abuse issues, and throughout the entire process Ralph went above and beyond to ensure the court had everything in place to keep me protected.

​Philip Bowen advised me not to submit the C100 form I had completed concerning my ex-wife’s controlling and coercive behaviour. This is a crucial document for any child arrangements proceedings and completely undermined my case. If I had the means, I would sue.

I instructed Chowdhury Sultan on two occasions through Barrister Connect and I honestly could not have asked for better representation. From the outset he was calm, reassuring and clearly very knowledgeable about the situation I was dealing with.

Paid for a consultation. They never arranged the meeting with the barrister, despite many calls and emails. This is a extremely non-serious firm, and in my opinion should be avoided (I would definitely go elsewhere for something as serious and costly as justice)

Farah Stehrenberger was incredible! Really helped me in a high stressful situation in family Court - her communication through out the process was top tier and her performance in court was incredible. I got the desired outcome. As a man, your never can be too sure how things will go in family court but Farah could see through the noise and focused on the key points which helped so much. I did not have to stress at all.

Mr Eugen MacLaughlin was my barrister. I had a very bad experience. He did not read my side of story and asked me to pay extra money to read for late evidence/policy that has nothing to do with my case. He refused to engage with my main strong evidence and spent time disagreeing and frightened me to leave my case im the middle of it. He was almost out of breath by the time the hearing started. I chose Mr Eugene because I thought he was older with years of experience in public law but it was a huge mistake.

We had lost our home to eviction with the Advise from Mr Nadeem we got it back

Marc Brittain did an outstanding job on my case, brought in at very short notice for a hearing he totally grasped the complexity of a case which has gone on for 3 years and achieved a great result in the High Court for me. Nick Wright of Counsel was instructed by me to prepare a particulars of claim for a complex GDPR breach matter. Nick was very responsive to my query and provided the particulars of claim very quickly of me providing my instructions. The Barrister Group responded to my query with a cost-effective quote for the services that would be required bearing in mind this was a small claims track case and Nick's particulars of claim was very detailed and clear about what the claim was about.

Recommendation:
1. The only feedback I would provide to improve the service provided by the Barrister Group would be to update Nick's profile as it is clear he has very good knowledge of GDPR breach claims and his profile does not contain this information and helps lay clients like me understand that Nick is more than suitable to be instructed in these types of cases as clients do review counsel profiles before confirming instructions.
