Disappointing experience – unfair game dynamics and poor room management
My husband and I attended The Traitors: Live Experience in London on Friday 18th September at 8pm, and unfortunately, the experience fell well below our expectations.
Our table consisted of 13 players, 11 of whom belonged to two separate friendship groups, leaving just my husband and me as the only people who didn’t know anyone else. To make matters worse, all three Traitors were selected from those two groups.
I was the first person to be murdered, and afterwards the players who had been Traitors admitted that they had been protecting their friends and wouldn’t allow the other Traitors to murder them. This effectively left my husband and me as the obvious targets. I understand that early elimination is part of the game, and I have attended before, so I accept that risk. However, this felt less like a game of deduction and strategy and more like being at a disadvantage simply because we weren’t part of an existing friendship group.
The wider atmosphere also made the experience disappointing. The two groups frequently talked over the Host while missions and instructions were being explained, showed little interest in engaging properly with the game, and didn’t participate meaningfully in Round Table discussions. The Host struggled to control the room, making it difficult to follow what was happening. Rather than being immersive and exciting, the experience became frustrating and draining.
I raised my concerns with a member of staff on the evening and was advised to email the company. I subsequently submitted a detailed complaint explaining both the unfair group dynamics and the problems with room management, along with constructive suggestions for improving the experience.
Unfortunately, my refund request was refused. Despite explaining that my concerns went beyond being eliminated early, the company relied on its booking policy and stated that its show report did not record significant disruptions. My experience was therefore not reflected in the report they referred to, and my concerns about the overall management of the session remained unresolved.
I have attended previously and enjoyed the experience, which makes this visit particularly disappointing. I believe tables should be allocated more carefully to avoid placing a couple or small group alongside two much larger friendship groups. The Host should also be able to maintain a suitable environment where everyone can hear instructions and participate properly.
I appreciate that every game will be different, and nobody can guarantee that a player will last until the end. However, I expected a well-managed, engaging experience where everyone had a reasonable opportunity to participate.
Sadly, this visit didn’t meet those expectations, and the way my complaint was handled afterwards has only added to my disappointment.
