What is an Access to Higher Education Diploma?
An Access to Higher Education Diploma, commonly called an Access to HE Diploma, is a Level 3 qualification designed mainly for adults who want to study at university but do not have the traditional qualifications usually required for entry, such as A levels.
The diploma helps students develop the subject knowledge and academic skills needed for higher education. Depending on the pathway chosen, it can support applications to degrees in nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, paramedic science, radiography, dental hygiene and therapy, psychology, education, business and other professional subjects.
A complete Access to HE Diploma contains 60 credits. Of these, 45 are graded Level 3 credits and 15 are ungraded credits. The graded units can be awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Universities set their own entry requirements. Before enrolling, students should check that the diploma pathway, subject content, credit requirements and accepted grades meet the requirements of their chosen university course. Universities may also require GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications in English and mathematics, and sometimes science.

Paramedic Science
The subjects covered in the course are varied and broad which is good. The learning materials often don't contain the information required to complete the follow-on quiz and contain grammatical errors, sentences that don't make sense and diagrams that either can't be viewed/don't load or are unreadable. The support from tutors is generally OK, but sometimes you have to wait a while for a response.

The Start of a New Chapter
Completing this course has been one of the most important things I’ve done this year. The structure, flexibility, and level of support have all been excellent from start to finish.
My tutor, Alison Ormsby, has been incredible – always supportive and clear with feedback. The course gave me both the confidence and academic foundation to pursue my dream of studying physiotherapy.
I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to take that next step towards a healthcare career.

Highly recommend!
I have only positive things to say about AOLL! I decided to use AOLL as I worked full-time as a dental nurse but wanted to apply for university to study dental hygiene in 2025. The flexibility of the online access to dental hygiene and therapy course meant I did not have to fit college around my job. I will say that doing an access course this way takes lots of discipline as I started my course in October 2024 and finished in May 2025, meaning I had to learn the concepts and complete an assignment roughly every 11 days to meet the deadline I wanted. That being said, AOLL is great for people who don’t need set lessons and are happy to manage the workload around full-time work. I had Jess and Mike as tutors during my course and they were both superb with marking my assignments efficiently and were always quick to reply to messages when I needed help. The assignments are extremely clear and manageable, providing a mixture of questions with anywhere between 100-1000 words. There were only a couple of times I had to contact IT support but they resolved my issues within the hour. I highly recommend using AOLL for those who are determined to work independently and need to get their access course done around other commitments.

Completing the course in the timeframe you set yourself shows impressive dedication and discipline.
We’re delighted that your tutors were able to support you so effectively throughout your studies, and that our IT team resolved your queries quickly when needed. Your comments about the clarity of the assignments and the way the course fits around work will be very valuable for others considering this route.
