I had high expectations for BookSirens

I had high expectations for BookSirens, but my experience was extremely disappointing.

They offer two pricing plans. The first is $10 per book upload plus $2 for every reader who downloads your book. The second plan is $100 per year and is marketed as ideal for authors with multiple books, with wording like “submit as many books as you want.” That sounds great — until you actually pay.

After subscribing to the annual author plan, I discovered they would only accept TWO books. Their explanation was that they “don’t have space to promote more titles.” In other words, the “unlimited submissions” claim is misleading at best.

What made it worse is that I only learned this after spending two full days uploading and preparing all 12 of my books. Only then was I told I could only publish two of them under the plan I had already paid for.

When I contacted support and pointed out that this felt deceptive, the response was cold and indifferent. They basically said they could recommend other services and didn’t seem to care if I left.

This is not honest marketing, and it’s a frustrating experience for authors who invest time and money into the platform. I cannot recommend BookSirens based on how they handle their own pricing promises.

Hello,

While authors can list unlimited ARCs under the Author Plan, they must first be accepted into the Author Plan and their books must meet the criteria described here:

https://support.booksirens.com/article/74-what-books-can-i-list-under-the-author-plan

Without knowing specifics, we cannot say whether all 12 books met this criteria. But we can certainly investigate this further and issue a full refund.

Please feel free to email support@booksirens.com for the same.

This site can be pretty helpful

This site can be pretty helpful. However, it's very difficult to get ARC readers unless you're promoting it somewhere else or paying the subscription. Overall, I would recommend it in certain cases, for example if Netgalley is too expensive!

5 Stars from A-Z!

I am a self-publishing author of 5 books, and I write this review about BookSirens voluntarily.

Having dealt with a large number of companies during my publishing journey, I can confidently say that the support provided to authors by BookSirens is unique and outstanding.

Not only because they provide us with the opportunity to present our books in front of readers who have volunteered to read our particular genre, but more so because of the complete journey of presenting our books for reviews from start to finish, which is easy, professional, and works seamlessly.

Add to that the immediate response and assistance that you receive from their support team. I can keep going on, but one last point is the extremely nominal charges that we pay for the reviews, and no charge for reviewers who are referred by us to share their reviews.

It is simply the best system for new books to help authors in their pre & post-launch campaigns, and I thank the Team for their professionalism and cusromer care.

I've used BookSirens for two of my books and I'm on the third one now. I've had nothing but a good experience. They're very reasonable in price and I have expanded my audience. So far so good!

Why offer a service

Why offer a service, if you cannot actually accommodate offering the service? I don't get it. It is incredibly unprofessional and discouraging. Thank you for nothing, BookSirens.

Hi Emmy,

Due to the way we operate, we can't accept every book that's submitted to us. We have a finite group of reviewers. Therefore there's a limit to how many books we can promote at the same time. If we're at capacity for a genre, we unfortunately have to decline submissions. Naturally, we don't bill authors if we decline their submission. Lack of space is the most common reason for declining a submission. Other possible reasons are listed here:

https://support.booksirens.com/article/48-why-was-my-book-declined

We'd be happy to recommend other book review sites which accept every book. Just keep in mind that this is not a magic bullet. On these sites, many books will not get any reviews because there's usually a mismatch between supply and demand: too many books spread across too few reviewers.

They need to vet their readers.

I reviewer, in their comments to me included saying that I showed "...I had not bothered to hire a book editor..." along with a laundry list of grammatically incorrect suggestions. The book editor "I did not bother hiring" is a graduate from UC Berkeley editing program, graduating at the top of her class. The reviewer included a few insults in the private message to me. I started making changes based on the comments and when I showed them to my book editor, she told me many were incorrect so I had to go back and undo the changes. Finding the reviewers FB page, I could see she had a high school diploma.

Hi William,

Thank you for the feedback. At this time, our vetting process consists of asking readers to confirm their email address and connect their social profiles (ex. Amazon, Goodreads, BookBub, etc...).

We realize that many authors / publishers have stricter criteria for who should be allowed to access their books. Since one size does not fit all, we have a feature whereby you can ask readers to request your book. When a reader requests your book, you can see their past reviews, profile details, DNF rate, etc... to help you decide whether to approve or decline their request. More on this here:

My book was not touched

Why are all book review services so meh? Book Sirens has a straight forward and easy approach to uploading and making an author account, but it cannot give you results. My book was up for a year on their services, and not a single soul touched it . I know what you are thinking: this guy's book must be horrible. And maybe I've tapped into the perfect formula for a book that repels readers, but no one will touch it, not even out of morbid curiosity. It can't all be my fault.

I sent in another book (which is getting rave reviews) and BS tells me that it is not an Advanced Reader Copy so they rejected it. When did that change? My previous book was not an ARC, and it was accepted. I guess I am dumb for trying them again.

Hi Michael,

Due to the way we operate, we can't accept every book that's submitted to us. We have a finite group of reviewers. Therefore we're limited by how many books we can promote at the same time. Our acceptance criteria for new submissions is outlined here:

https://support.booksirens.com/article/81-what-is-the-acceptance-criteria

Moreover, even if we accept your book, we cannot predict how many reviews it will get. It depends on many factors, many of which are out of our control. We discuss more here:

https://support.booksirens.com/article/120-how-many-readers-can-i-expect-for-my-first-arc-on-booksirens

If your book does not get any reviews by the end of the promotion, feel free to ask us for a refund.

Christianophobia

Apparently, this site does not accept Christian books and refuses to justify their decision to reject them.
Is this discrimination? If so, it’s a serious issue.

Overall, not a positive experience

I love the idea of these websites. Many work well. I spent quite a sum of money forwarding my books for review and had one review back after 4 months of trying with Booksirens. That was 3 stars, and although I paid for the review, the reviewer did not wish to give a written review. The company prides itself on honest reviews, but I find that successful accounts bring in their own reviewers from social media and the likes. For those who are independently seeking honest reviews, I found they do not get a fair service.
I tried a variety of books with BookSirens, but this one mediocre solitary review sat on my Amazon account for months, and it took ages to budge it or improve on it. Overall, not a positive experience

Hi Raven,

We don't consider a rating to be a review. Therefore, our system should have automatically awarded you a reader credit for this reader. Reader credits is our way of ensuring that, long term, you're only paying for tangible results. More on this here:

https://support.booksirens.com/article/46-what-are-reader-credits-and-how-do-they-work

If you're not sure you got a reader credit, feel free to reach out to us and we'll look into it.

More generally, it is hard to predict how many reviews a book will receive on BookSirens, even if an author doesn't bring in their own reviewers and relies entirely on the BookSirens community. Some books get more traction than others. We discuss this more here:
