Do you know the name of the one who takes your money and gives you absolutely nothing in return? Well, dear writers, that’s another word for Booksprout. Stay away. One star is still too much.

No readers, waste of money

There are no readers, they don't have a community large enough to satisfy everyone who visits their site, so after paying them for your campaign, you have to pay to find readers with ads or listings. You might as well just pay for the latter and not distribute your work for free.

They promise a platform with reviewers…

They promise a platform with reviewers for your books and make you pay monthly. Through another company I got 300 reviewers (for the same price), through Booksprout I only got 2. Their platform is confusing and it's a waste of money!! They don't have reviewers, they want the authors to swap. I can do that for free on facebook groups - not a paid service. Go with Netgalley or Bookfunnel - it's better for the author and reader. I'd request a refund but I'm not wasting any more time with them!!

Does Not Provide what It Says It Does

I signed up (without the possibility of a trial period) to use the service as a way of finding readers and reviews for my book. I received no reviews, and no help in accessing reviews beyond the suggestion to connect with my own audience, which obviously I had already done.

Misleading Platform, Poor Experience — Ended Up with a 1-Star Review on Amazon


I’m very disappointed with my experience using Booksprout. I signed up and paid for a subscription to share my book with readers, but quickly discovered that the platform has extremely strict technical limitations. It’s not suitable for uploading full-length, colorful, or larger-format books — which is critical for many authors like myself.

Because my book couldn't be fully uploaded, I was forced to include only a single PDF page with a link to the actual content. This confused the reader, who left a 1-star review on Amazon. The worst part? My subscription expired before I could even reply to the feedback — and Booksprout requires payment just to respond.

I paid for a service that ultimately hurt my book’s reputation. This platform may work for very basic, text-only books, but it's not author-friendly, and definitely not transparent about its limitations. I cannot recommend it.

You don't get what they promised

Their website promises a lot of nice features and reviews, but in reality, you won't really get anything.
They don't have a trial period, so you'll just have to 'PAY' for something to try it.

First month, 2 people claimed my book, and only 1 left a review after 3 weeks. The other one just ghosted - checked their profile, and they have 500+ overdue reviews. "500+"

The feature I like is that reviewers can be evaluated and rated as well, like those who are bad reviewers can be blocked. Though this won't mean much if you don't get anyone to review.

Sadly the first objective of this site failed to deliver - no one is picking up my book for review here. 2nd campaign is running for weeks without getting a reviewer.

They need to address this primary issue - getting reviewers. Otherwise, this site is just a pointless money drain

Cancelling today - Terrible Business

Cancelling today after one month of wasted time and money. Zero book reviews. I opened an account with Pubby on the same day as I opened an account with Booksprout, I received 14 verified Amazon reviews within the very first week.

This service is not worth the trouble. Neither the readers are enthusiastic, nor their support team. I gave up after just a week. One serious reviewer needed support with downloading the book, but no one at Booksprout even responded, which ultimately lead to the reader to give up and withdraw.

Better use services like Book Bounty or Pubby, where you know at each and every step how your book is doing.

The 5 Star reviews are from people getting free books

If you are considering paying for the service, consider carefully.

***Readers tastes are subjective. I will concede that could be the reason there were no reviews.***

I originally thought I would sign up for a year and get the discount. I am sure glad I decided against that and took the $9/month option.

The site is very well done, easy to use and robust. The problem is that the service doesn't deliver reviews as it promises. The one reader who downloaded the book appeared to have an immense number of other books she had downloaded. The reviews she posted were bare bones, generic pap. These reviews wouldn't sway anyone to buy your book. The poor quality didn't matter in the end because she never even reviewed it. I cancelled after the second month - it became clear that I would only be throwing away good money after bad.

They are responsive and friendly when you reach out. I got the suggestion to add keywords etc. But that's not what you are paying for.

Brilliant app/site

Brilliant app/site. You choose books that interest you to review & receive them in a format of your choosing. Any file issues are sorted out promptly by the help team. I've found so many new authors to follow this way & am grateful for the books as I love to read 💜

Love booksprout. Avid reader and reviewer!

I believe I joined book sprout late last year and to date, I have reviewed 112 books. Sorry to the authors who don't write the genres I read. I generally tend to download 5 books starting on Friday and read them ALL by either their set due date or at my leisure. I am able to read 2 books in a matter of day as A. I read really fast,B. I suffer from insomnia and lastly C. I had plenty of time on my hands going through cancer treatments. I say this all to say I like the genre I like and will reserve that book. I have provided my honest review and have had an author respond negatively to me via message or even block me to stop the review. Any issues I had downloading a book etc.. I would email booksprout and they would respond thr next day. I say all this to say as a reader/reviewer one cannot and should not blame the platform if your book is not selling. It just maybe truly no interest. I stick solely to romance so no I would never select anything outside of that genre. I review on Amazon, goodreads and book hub. I make sure to go back and my review to all of those sites even if they are optional. Thus it's not the site just folks may not be interested in your genre.

I suggest booksprout close down. Since 2018 I have only ever had one review, she was a nice lady. Its apparent that booksprout lost the plot long ago and should stop fibbing.

Book sprout is extremely problematic!

Book sprout allows the readers to have way too many books to review. And then they reward them for the reviews by allowing them more reviews. This creates a system of reviewers not really reading and throwing up reviews that prove they didn't even read the book. Reviewers often rate poorly, and it makes me think they are other authors trying to weed out the competition. It's all the authors I know who have tried them say this too. They should also take notes from Story origin and let us decide which readers get our book. There is no reason to use this service for your own arc team. Book funnel is so much better. The reviewers they send you aren't worth the time or money. Customer service also ignores you. Stay far away from booksprout. Letting all my author groups know.

Blocking doesn't work and company knows it

When you block a reader they are not really blocked. The company is terrible and knows their system is broken but doesn't care.

Waited 1 month for 1 review

Waited 1 month for 1 review. The reviewer's stats always showed her 10 books late. Her mediocre review basically told the reader to make up their own minds.
I have received 5-star ratings from NetGalley which is not easy.
Booksprout's reviewer emailed me back saying she was sick and that was why she was so late on so many books. Could that also explain her tepid review?
Then she threatened me with her "publishing connections" because I messaged her.
What a scam.
