Drake is not what it used to be

I have used Drake Tax for many years. It is a relatively easy and intuitive tax software to use in preparing a wide range of tax returns. However, customer service has definitely declined since the company was sold. This past filing season, I received bad information from support people on more than one occasion and I waited 10 days for them to communicate a resolution to me for another software problem I had with a partnership return. Also, I wanted to try Drake e-sign, but was required to sign up for Drake Portals and pay in advance for e-signs just to set up the free trial. Turns out, the Portal set up for my clients was cumbersome so I opted to not use Portals and therefore could not use e-signs. I have asked three times for a refund of the $25 I paid in advance for those e-signs that were never used and have been denied each time. It's petty on my part to keep asking for a refund, but really poor customer service on Drake's part to not give it back. They will keep my $25, but will risk losing my $2,500+ subscription fee going forward?! Not a good business model! I am looking at alternative tax software for next year.

Easy to fill out

Questions were direct in most cases and easily understood. Options to fill in and other information was a very nice option too!

Drake is my favorite tax software

Drake is my favorite tax software, I have tried others, but I always come back to Drake. The tech support is very lacking, you will need to find answers online as they know less than the preparer. The portal is not that great, but the pros of using Drake verses other software, for me, outweighs the cons. It would be nice to have an AI ability such as Blue J attached to the software.

I have used Drake since 2008

I have used Drake since 2008. Have stayed for the price, and customer service. So far, the software has met 99.9% of my firm's needs for the tax services we provide. I did not know the company was sold. I hope any changes are for the best, not the contrary.

Excellent software that is easy to use…

Excellent software that is easy to use with time saving features such as populating fields for 1099-R and W-2. Super helpful customer support for tax questions and installation.

I've been using the company since 2005

I've been using the company since 2005. Prior software was TAASC until it was purchased by Intuit and killed off. The company has grown significantly since I started but I continue to be impressed by its value compared to the other providers. Even though the price has increased, I still consider it a good value. I've never been disappointed by tech service and understand during certain periods that a wait may have to be tolerated.

35 years with Drake

I have been using Drake Software for over 35 years doing tens of thousands of returns. Help has been only a phone call away but hardly ever needed.

Best bang for the buck

Not the best tax software, but you just can't beat the price for what you get. Best customer service of nearly any service like it.

For the money

For the money, this is the software to use. It's not too complicated. They are quick to address problems. I don't dop a lot of complicated returns, but I do a lot of easy returns.

The past 2 years have been AWFUL

The past 2 years have been an abomination using Drake Tax Online and Rightworks. The incompetency of staff never returning calls or giving wrong information leaves a lot to be desired. I am hunting for a new software and will more than likely change of if I do stay I will look for another cloud based company because of all the down time I had in the office for myself and staff.

Slowly being priced out

Been with Drake for years, but the pricing continues to rise and now we have all these paid features being shoved down our throats. I LOVE the software, but this year it would just close the program randomly which sometimes resulted in loss of data entry. That's a huge negative for me.

Disappointed long time user switching software.

We have used Drake since 2013. Ever since Drake was sold a few years back, the problems with the software have increased. Starting a couple of years ago, the software would just stop and disappear from your screen without warning. It has gotten increasingly worse, with this year being the worst. Also, support told us that they will not help with any program issues if you do not use Rightworks (I think), their cloud provider partner. This is insane! And over the last few years, the flow from federal to state returns have gotten worse. This year, we had to do a lot of overrides to get our home state of Arkansas to work correctly. This was a time waster. I loved working on
Drake, but as their product has become increasingly problematic, we will be switching software.

Drake was not ready for the filing season

After using Drake Software for the past 20+ years, the 2025 tax filing season was the worst ever. Customer support was basically non-existent as they would not listen to the issue and wasted more time than benefit. Drake was clearly not ready for the current filing season as we were not able to file many Partnership or Corporate returns until March due to problems with the State of Oklahoma returns. No communication from Drake on the issues

For Tax Pros; Great Support

Our tax office has used DrakeSoftware since the 1990s. They have improved each year, so years better than others, but in the end, they get the job done! We appreciate their customer service (i.e. availability, knowledge, accessibility).
