Drake Tax is the best software for small tax offices

Drake Tax is the best software for manual data entry and ease of use. I know from my 10+ years' experience working with other CPA level tax software. Customer service is top notch, however, this last tax season wasn't at the same level as in previous years. Having the online client status manager (aka Drake Hub, new for 2026) seemed to slow down receipt of acknowledgements and Drake Workflow showed conflicting information from Drake Software but overall, this software is still number one for me.

Because of the Professional Tax and Accounting software that is the best in the industry, it is only exceeded by the World Class Support that is provided throughout the year, not just during tax season. This level of Customer Support is what all other corporations' customer support should be measured to.

Terrible tech support in English.

Terrible tech support in English.
Only reason I'm updating is your Spanish Tech Support excellent just like in the old days, software has some bugs but they all do, English support almost un-existing never able to figure out why my 2023 Software won't efile anymore.

they raised the cost by 23.10%

i'd give them more than one star because it has served us well over the years, however, recent changes more than offset all of the goodwill. Drake Software has become increasingly difficult to justify due to their pricing practices. This year they raised the cost by 23.10%, which is simply unreasonable for the same product with no meaningful improvements. I’ve used Drake for years, but these steep annual increases feel out of touch with the needs of small firms. Unless they reconsider their pricing strategy, I’ll be exploring alternatives.

Drake Support during tax season…2025 Tax Returns

Drake Support during tax season continues to be great.

Airbnb - renting a room in your home while you also live there continues to be cumbersome in the data entry screens.

For the cost of Drake tax prep software…

For the cost of Drake tax prep software it is good. I only prepare 40-50 returns so I don't have that may clients to spread the cost over. I am down from the 300 returns I did a while back with a staff of three persons.

I have used Drake Software for many…

I have used Drake Software for many years and have looked for cheaper programs, but nothing can out do Drake for being the best on the market!!!!

Overall

Overall, it is a strong program and when corrections or changes need to be made, they update quickly and effectively. I have used this program for years, and would have given a 5 star rating last year. This year I went down to a 4 because they have not trained nor hired the phone support they used to have. Phone support this year gave me inaccurate information 2 times. This did not happen in the past, they would contact a supervisor or programing to get correct and accurate information. But 2 times this year the phone support guessed instead of finding out. First time I saw the answer shortly after hanging up, I just had to click a box I didn't see on the bottom of the screen. Support had told me I would have to paper file the return. And the second time, I asked if Iowa would be paid on the 15th along with the federal payment (it was on the transaction report with no date following) and they assured me it would be. But it wasn't. I also sent the client a payment coupon so they were able to pay the Iowa tax liability in, but to guess and make stuff up when they don't know, is bad support. So, to summarize, their customer support was great for years, but this past season it went down hill hard.

Inefficient and NOT user friendly

After using several different tax software options in my career, I find Drake Tax very inefficient. I'm honestly not sure how it get's reviewed so well... it is not user friendly. Forms are often not linked to input sources (or input has to be duplicated on different screens), diagnostics are not linked to the source of the issue, and input screen descriptions do not match the official forms. It takes way too long to figure out the right input or how to fix a diagnostic. This software slows me down. People say the customer service is good, but with a good tax software you should not need much customer service. The last thing I need during busy season is to have to call or research issues. The customer service may be good, but my time is worth more.

Drake is excellent

Drake is excellent. The product is well structured, relatively easy to adapt from earlier ones. The help line answers immediately, with no delays, and accesses the applicable help source immediately. No delays answering. Cost-effective.

After using Lacerte tax products for 30…

After using Lacerte tax products for 30 years, I found Drake to be comparable if not better and easier than Lacerte - the price was beyond belief - I just couldn't believe a program that provided everything I ever needed at a FRACTION of the cost of Lacerte. Even though I was just learning the program, I was able to complete return and track them faster and better than I ever had before!!

Drake software is Worth a Time Investment

I have found Drake software intuitive and easy to use - but KIM all software comes with a steep initial learning curve, excellent customer service, feature-rich (multiple ways to do automated billing, scheduler, organizers for clients, etc), a useful and helpful video library, and more. As a CPA who has used different tax software over 40+ years of practice, I have zero complaints with Drake.

Reality Check

First, any professional who thinks any software is more than a calculator is fooling themselves. Any software, their guarantee is that it can add and subtract. DRAKE like any other software evolves with the tax code and yes, it doesn't do some things (some of those restrictions come directly from the government entities). And, if you think the customer service reps should know everything about every issue with the Fed, 50 states, plus territories, and local forms, you are fooling yourself. Drake customer service does a GREAT job. And, yes the price went up, but it is still relatively affordable. However, they changed their unlimited package to unlimited personal and an add on for business returns and they didn't make that clear for this most recent season. I had to purchase business returns.
