the Panopticon We Can All Feel Good About
Flock Safety: Finally, the Panopticon We Can All Feel Good About
What an extraordinary company.
Flock Safety has accomplished something genuinely difficult: making the construction of a dystopia sound like a neighborhood improvement project.
Based in Atlanta, Flock has apparently decided that the old-fashioned approach to public safety—investigation, warrants, probable cause, actually identifying suspects—was simply too inefficient. Why stop criminals when you can build a sufficiently comprehensive system for watching everyone?
Brilliant.
The technology is undeniably impressive. License plates, vehicle characteristics, locations, timestamps, patterns of movement—what a triumph of innovation. George Orwell could only dream of having this kind of infrastructure.
And the branding is even better.
“Flock Safety.”
Not “Permanent Vehicle Surveillance Network.” Not “Automated Movement Tracking System.” Certainly not “Welcome to the Panopticon.”
No, no.
Safety.
That little word does an astonishing amount of work.
Because once surveillance is called safety, questioning it starts to sound like you’re opposed to safety. And who could possibly be against safety?
That is the genius.
Flock has apparently discovered that the most effective way to build a dystopian surveillance architecture is not to announce that you’re building one. Just make it convenient. Make it friendly. Put a reassuring logo on it. Tell everyone it’s for the children.
Even better, make the system useful enough that people become emotionally invested in expanding it.
That’s the truly elegant part.
A burglar gets caught? Great.
A stolen car gets recovered? Wonderful.
A violent criminal gets identified? Fantastic.
And somewhere along the way, we quietly normalize the idea that an enormous network of privately operated cameras should record the movements of ordinary people who have committed no crime whatsoever.
But don’t worry.
It’s for safety.
Five stars for technological execution.
Five stars for branding.
Five stars for demonstrating that the first step toward a Panopticon isn’t usually a jackboot.
It’s a five-star review.
Flock Safety deserves enormous credit for proving that you don’t need to abolish privacy outright. You merely need to make its disappearance sufficiently convenient, sufficiently profitable, and sufficiently wrapped in the language of public safety that people stop noticing it’s gone.
Absolutely visionary.
The dystopia of tomorrow, brought to you today—with excellent customer service.
An extremely dangerous surveillance company
An extremely dangerous surveillance company that tracks licence plates cars, faces, and whatever else that hasn't been made publicly known yet. They are fierce and rude to their critics rather than addressing them properly. Their technologies are often used for individual tracking for the wrong purposes, like an officer tracking their ex. They are not monitored properly, and continue to run rampant in unsuspecting cities.
They are the literal example of George Orwell's 1984. They are extremely dangerous to have around.
Disgusting use of technology
Horrible horrible company. Violates everyone's rights and privacy. Super sketchy, has no oversight and seems to answer to no one. Police are already using this to track people for their own gain. No one is safe when this company exists.
This company is shady
This company is shady, and has massive ethical concerns. My wife worked for them, raised ethical concerns about some of the things she was asked to do, and she was fired last year because of it.
A private company
A private company - with no oversight, permission and overwhelming unpopularity - can litter your city with cameras-on-stick surveillance so that police can stalk their ex's. and no, you cannot vote this out. All of your city councilors are paid off already.
Parasites.
Even George Orwell would be scared.
If I could give it a ranking below one, I by all means would. These arent here to protect anyone. These are telescreens from 1984.
Fraud Fraud Fraud
This company is about transparency
This company is about transparency. But yet they keep the companies location a secret, hiding from the publics eye, the same public they keep all eyes on. They used child's ballet session to show future clients the capability, without permission to video those children. They should be in prison.
Big brother wants its dystopia back
If you love “American freedom”, say goodbye! Now any ham and egger can track you, your family, and do with that information as they will! We already have multiple cops facing suspension for using this company to track and abuse people, but heck, anyone with a basic understanding of hacking can do it! And whats stopping foreign governments from hacking this software to abuse Americans? Nothing! Gee, “land of the free” was good while it lasted, folks!
This company is trash
This company is trash! Only 1 being sees all things. "God"
The Ceo of this company wants to get rich while he sits back trying to be God. Do not let this company do this to America as far as everyone i have spoken to about this is in agreement! , flock is a direct violation on our 4th Amendment Rights and the citizens of America need to close these doors forever. F××k you Flock.
No one wants your cameras around take…
No one wants your cameras around take em down or we the people will.
This is a violation to OUR human…
This is a violation to OUR human rights! Our privacy and freedoms are slowly slipping away because of technology. Dear viewer, please DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT point green lasers at the Flock camera as it can be very damaging to the camera, and cost the company a lot of money. Thank you! Don't use 1-5 watts for 30 secs to a minute on one or else it will damage it! 😉
If I could give zero stars I would
If I could give zero stars I would. This company is a violation of human rights. How can you say it’s “for safety” when you track EVERYONES movements and allow anyone to access the system. Multiple police forces have been caught stalking innocent people. I hope your business goes bankrupt you demon spawns
Surveillance company
Bit weird aye
Unconstitutional surveillance
Unconstitutional surveillance of citizens, tracking, illegally sharing data
Unconstitutional hope to see massive…
Unconstitutional hope to see massive lawsuit soon
DOWN WITH FLOCK
We have constitutional rights to not be watched. Flock Safety cameras should not exist around cities. Flock is a violation of privacy.
Truly an evil company since they have…
Truly an evil company since they have been found to leak customer data. Would not trust any of their camera systems. Super greedy and definitely stealing and leaking people’s information
