Howler Audio Avis

Howler Audio have produced an incredibly versatile and powerful device that literally fits in the palm of your hand. If you are a live performer - whether you’re a working DJ, live singer or even a comedian - recording your set in high-quality audio has always been one of the most complicated challenges.

Distortion is the biggest challenge - and bummer, not to mention automatically-segmented files (which are the default for Rekordbox and Serato - often losing the last part of the recording unless you remember to manually stop the REC and quit out of the programs - something most live performers aren’t thinking about at the end of a big night) - these are just a few of the biggest disappointments to discover after you’ve just played one of your best sets.

The Howler is the best solution on the market - far outweighing options like a GoPro or iPhone (even with a Bluetooth Lavalier which often dropout as you move around the stage).

They have thought of practically everything - while also keeping it extremely simple. You can choose to record in WAV or MP3, or Stream live or record to video using your platform of choice.

For my use as a DJ, my biggest issue with recording at large 5k capacity theatres and nightclubs is the fact that the microphones are never plugged into the mixer - they always come from Front of House. So recording sets where you interact on the microphone results in lost audio and dropouts that make no sense if you can’t hear the microphone. With my Howler, I simply hand the super small device to the sound tech and they plug it directly into the master board and ALL the audio is captured - including microphone and even audible audience reactions with a microphone set offstage to capture all the great reactions that make recording a live show so much fun.

All that excitement is lost when you record internally from your DJ software, and the Howler not only solves this issue, but does so in such an unobtrusive, simple way that no audio tech thus far has even mustered a single complaint. It doesn’t get in the way of their work and with the right RCA to XLR adapter, it takes seconds to se up. It’s just so easy to use!

I’m not even mentioning many of the other incredible features - the battery life is insane. I’ve gotten more than 20+ hours on a single charge - enough to cover an entire leg of a tour without ever having to worry about the battery dying - and even if it does, IT STILL KEEPS THE LAST RECORDING as an emergency fail-safe instead of losing the audio altogether, not to mention there is a flashing light that warns you that you’re running low on battery, so there’s never any surprises.

Overall, I cannot understate how impressive the bandwidth is for recording undistorted audio. We have had multiple DJs - from A-Trak to Trixie Mattel to countless opening DJs each with different levels and gains - and yet still the Howler keeps the levels clean and crisp despite the varying inputs. Just awesome.

Very happy with this purchase - if you have bought iRigs and GoPro’s and any number of devices to capture the full audio of your sets, and ended up with crunchy fragmented, or just disappointing quality, The Howler is an incredibly reliable and affordable option that solves one of the greatest challenges D.j.’s face when trying to capture the magic of a great set.
