Do not publish your indie game with these people. Someone will break into your github account, then punish you...the rightful account holder...by withholding your announcement blog post, while the person whom broke into your account ( possibly from China or Russia ) basically gets away scot free.
With any high value technology, you should publish your indie game on your own website.

Itch.io in my opinion is one of the best online cites to buy indie games both for free and for low costs. All the games that I have downloaded up until now have all been very trouble free and easy to install.

Absolutely horrible support experience
Absolutely horrible support experience. I sent a message to the support email address in June 6th of 2025, and waited. After not getting a reply for a while, I sent a reply to my previous email asking for some kind of update on August 31st, and after not getting any sort of reaction once again, I reached out a second time on September 28th. Even after that, I got no reply what so ever. So on October 28th, I've decided to go to their community forums as a last resort, and post there.
After my post went up, I got a reply within an hour or so, telling me they can't help at all, BUT on the forum side, my thread was immediately locked and hidden from public view, and a moderator simply told me that it is entirely my fault that I didn't receive a reply from the support team, because they couldn't help with my request, and I was breaking forum rules by posting about support not responding to me. And since my post was immediately locked, I had no way to respond to this moderator to voice my concern.
So in short: If your support ticket can't be helped, you will likely never get an answer to it, and you'll be ignored forever.
Don't upload/sell your games on this…
Don't upload/sell your games on this website, they will never pay you out and they won't answer support tickets, scammers.
Itch io = scam
Just avoid using this platform. You can read their public forum, literally hundreds of people waiting for a payout for over 8-12 weeks, completely insane. And Itch will eat an unbeliavable margin of your profits through fees, it's crazy
And the best part: they can just suspend your account at anytime saying you are involved in fraudulent activities (you are just selling games and ebooks) without providing any kind of evidence or proof. Just to ban your account and steal your money.
Terrible platform controlled by scammers.
An issue not resolved
I've been running into an issue concerning several of my games not showing up in the search results. This issue began on August 10 and is still going on, even to this day. I suspect that some of my games have been de-indexed/delisted, without reason or warning, and I'm not sure why. I try to be as courteous as possible, I try to follow all the rules, I don't try to make trouble, and I try to be supportive of other devs, but for some reason, it seems that several of my games have been made invisible. The following games that have been affected are as follows: Stranded, Alone, The Mystery Of The Rebels, The Mystery Of The Rebels 2, The Mystery Of The Rebels 3, The Mystery Of The Rebels 4, 57, and Pre-Releases, which was the newest one that I had uploaded. This is disheartening, as the purpose for uploading the last mentioned game page was so people could try out the games that I had been working on, if they wanted to. I even added a prototype for one of my other games, but it's not even being seen because of this. It's also upsetting that an entire game series (The Mystery Of The Rebels series) and the teaser for it (57) has been made invisible. When typing in the titles specifically, they do not show up on the site. It's a mystery game series, and it has no nudity or anything like that. None of my games have that. I put so much work into that series, and for it to be made unseen is depressing. I've reached out several times regarding this matter and I have yet to see any response or to see it being resolved. Now, I know that they had fixed the issue for other people who have experienced this. Why can't they resolve it for me? I feel like they're ignoring my inquiries regarding the matter, and it makes me feel devalued as a creative, a game developer, and as an individual. I put a lot of work into my projects, and just because they're not like everyone else's, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be seen. There is nothing suggestive in these games and there is no NSFW content of any kind in these games whatsoever, especially Stranded, which is actually suitable for general audiences, and yet, it's been made unseen to the public. Today, I decided to post a dev log about Stranded, and it did not show up on the dev log page on the site. I feel that my games are being hidden unjustly without reason or warning, and I want it fixed. Now, this is at least the third time that I've inquired about this. All I get is an automated response. It truly makes me feel devalued as an individual.
itch.io is absolutely a scam
Okay, let's be real here. Why would you use itch.io? You're probably looking for a payment processor. And then you stumbled around itch.io and you decided to use it. So, let me just tell you this. This website is totally a scam website. They might pay you once or twice. And then they will black out totally and you won't even get any response out of them. My personal experience, I started working with itch.io in January 2025. I got paid for a few months. But then they decided to not pay anymore. And I contacted them three or four times. There is no response at all. So, if you want to work with them, it's your choice. But it's absolutely a trash website. It doesn't pay. And once it pays, it's very late. It takes like three weeks for one payment. So, you have been warned. That's it.
The best alternative to Steam
- Requires everything to be DRM free because unlike Steam they get it that DRM is spam!
- Allows you to choose their payment cut, can be anywhere from 0%-100% (also unlike GOG, which takes a 30% cut just like Steam does)
- No vetting process, open to all (unlike GOG, which has a vetting process that's arguably even more strict than Steam)
- Isn't uptight about copyright and doesn't come down on fan games and stuff of the like - because it's run by actual people and not by dumb AIs!
and thankfully they're trying to give up scummy violin destroying Paypal and the other fascist payment processors, so despite all of this I think they're trying their best to make things right as they don't like what's happening either.
overzealous censorship
In my humble opinion, platforms ideally should value fans and make things convenient for loyal customers or creators. Not tease fans and inconvenience them with overzealous censorship that chase creators away.
Creators funds can be stolen or frozen with little to no warning. Creators can get de-index even if they didn't break any rules.
Don't waste your time
Why would you support a site that doesn't like you, value your time or efforts? Not me. See ya itch.
Customer service is painfully slow and…
Customer service is painfully slow and gloriously incompetent. This is what happens when you go the way Itch did. A once great community lost its way and has no moral or ethical compass to find it. I don't imagine the future for Itch is very bright. Hopefully a new community takes its place and soon.
Some of the games I bought were…
Some of the games I bought were suggesting violence.
The removed them without a warning.
So I paid a service, I paid them and I paid a creator.
They let down everyone.
Absolutely trashy standards
Absolutely trashy standards. They set up and welcome certain games then the moment visa says no no, they cave completely. Ruining free speech and caving to a monopoly. Even worse removing already bought items from peoples libraries. Should be and might be illegal.
Avoid like the plague - Itch.io is not legit, it's not safe at all
They are scammers. Itch.io is not legit. I've waited for 15 days to receive my first payout, they just answered:
You have been permanently suspended for fraudulent activities. Cease use of all services on itch.io immediately. This decision will not be reversed.
They didn't provide any kind of detail or explanation, the money was just stolen. They just reserve the right to ban you and retain the money, total scam. I was selling digital products (created by myself and automatically delivered after the sale), how could it be a fraud?
The only fraudster here is ITCH.IO - A complete SCAM, total amateur and offensive support, avoid like the plague!
