Sold my old iMac to MacBack and the…

Sold my old iMac to MacBack and the whole process was smooth and straightforward. They honoured the original quoted price with no issues. Collection was arranged for Thursday, although DPD unfortunately didn’t show up that day — not MacBack’s fault. DPD arrived on Friday with the packaging box and everything was handled professionally from there.
By Tuesday evening I’d received confirmation of the final price, and payment was in my account by Wednesday. Fast payment, good communication, and an easy experience overall. Would happily use them again.

Be very careful using MacBack

Be very careful using MacBack. I sent in a decent spec iMac which they originally quoted £190 for. I understand the accessories weren’t included and they had to deduct that, but they offered £82 instead because of a few very light scratches and apparent screen burn I’d never seen. The machine has 32gb of DDR4 ram inside which second hand can get £150, let alone the Samsung EVO 1tb SSD. They seriously under offer you hoping you’ll accept. When I rejected they just chucked my iMac in a box and didn’t package it securely at all and the machine came back filthy, they only had it a few days. I took photos and will be taking that further. When I spoke to them on the phone they just laughed at me. Unprofessional, rude, low balls offers, one star behaviour. Don’t waste your time.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry you were unhappy with the revised valuation and return process, but we’d like to clarify the reasons behind the regrade.

The iMac was originally submitted as a Grade A device. Our Grade A criteria requires the machine to be in excellent condition with minimal signs of use and no display defects. During inspection, our technicians noted the following:

Condition identified:

Light scratches on the rear casing
Screen burn visible in the bottom left of the display

In addition, the iMac arrived without the keyboard and mouse, which also results in standard deductions as outlined in our grading criteria.

Most importantly, any visible screen burn automatically places an iMac outside Grade A or B condition and requires it to be regraded to Grade C, regardless of RAM or SSD upgrades. While upgraded components such as additional RAM and SSDs do add value, the overall resale grade is still heavily impacted by permanent display defects.

We also want to clarify that the revised valuation was not based on “hoping you’d accept,” but on the condition and completeness of the device received versus the original submitted grade. You were under no obligation to proceed and chose to have the device returned free of charge.

It’s also important to note that throughout this process, all costs are covered by us — including courier collection, packaging, testing, administration, and return shipping — even where a device has been incorrectly graded in the original submission.

We take comments regarding staff conduct seriously, as professionalism is important to us, and we’re sorry if you felt the interaction did not meet expectations.

We stand by the grading assessment, but we appreciate your feedback and are sorry the experience did not meet your expectations.

Service as described

I had a very bad experience with…

I had a very bad experience with Macback and wouldn’t recommend using this website. They damaged my MacBook Pro and returned it to me in that condition. I would prefer using MusicMagpie instead, as it’s a much better option for selling your used items.

Your MacBook Pro was collected in a protective box with foam inserts, designed specifically to keep the device secure in transit. When the device arrived with us, our technicians noted the following faults:

Faults identified on inspection:
• Left command key damaged
• Device turns off when unplugged (battery fault)
• Lines across the top of the screen

These are functional and display faults, rather than transit damage, and would not be caused by the device being handled or returned by us. They are issues that would have been present prior to or during use.

At no point do we intentionally damage devices — all items are handled carefully and returned in the same condition they are received if an offer is declined. You were under no obligation to proceed, and the device was returned to you accordingly.

We take claims like this seriously, so if you have any evidence of the device’s condition immediately prior to collection, we would be more than happy to review this further.

We’re sorry the experience didn’t meet your expectations.

Truly superb service. Very highly recommended

In the run up to selling my old iMac I had several questions which Jake (Team MacBack) answered clearly, quickly, honestly and efficiently.
The process of collection and payment is super smooth. You are given a window for collection by DPD on the day and I was paid the same day they received my iMac which was the day after collection. No messing about with these guys, no chiselling or delayed payment. Just a fair honest exchange.
I highly recommend Jake and Team MacBack and if you care about the environment knowing that your old Apple kit will be recycled by an honest business is really good to know.

SCAM ARTISTS

SCAM ARTISTS! I should’ve read the comments. Original offer on my MacBook Pro was 394 gbp, once I sent it to them they quoted me 108 gbp based on a few minor superficial marks, absurd as this was a top spec model I maxed out and nearly paid 4k for in 2020. Had them send it right back, total scam business, do not waste your time with these crooks.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry you were disappointed with the revised valuation, but we do need to correct the suggestion that this was in any way a “scam.”

The original quote was based on the device being submitted as Grade B, which on our grading criteria means:
“The item should be in good condition with a few hairline scratches and fully functioning in all ways, with no marks on screen. A well looked after item. Good battery under 500 cycles and fully complete.”

Once received, our technicians noted the following issues that fall outside that Grade B description:

Condition noted on inspection:
• Small chips on top
• Scratches and stains on base
• Antiglare damage and small chips on screen
• Small chips on hinge

In particular, screen marks and antiglare damage mean the device does not meet the “no marks on screen” requirement for Grade B, which is why the device was regraded and the valuation changed.

Importantly, you were under no obligation to accept the revised offer, and you chose to have the MacBook returned free of charge. We absorbed the costs of collection, inspection and return shipping, even though the issue arose because the device was not entered under the correct grade in the original quote.

We understand it can be frustrating when a device you paid a lot for historically does not retain the value you expected today, but resale valuations are based on current market value, condition, and grading standards, not original purchase price.

We stand by our assessment, but we’re sorry we weren’t able to meet your expectations.

Cannot Recommend!

I recently used MacBack to sell my MacBook Pro, and unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing.

The device did have some faults, a few broken key caps and a battery with over 500 cycles, which I understand would reduce its value. Based on this, I was initially quoted £13.75. From previous experience with MacBack, I expected the final valuation to increase after inspection, as it had done before.

Aside from the keyboard issue, general wear and tear, and battery condition, the rest of the MacBook was in good working order. Because of this, I do not believe £13.75 is a fair valuation, especially as it would likely be worth more if sold for parts independently.

I contacted MacBack the same day to raise my concerns, but since then, I have received no response. This is particularly unusual, as they were previously very responsive during working hours.

At this point, I feel let down by both the valuation and the lack of communication. Until this is resolved, I cannot recommend MacBack based on my current experience.

Edit: I seem it a suspicious, as usually as you are emailing someone back and forth, it would not go into spam automatically. I would like to add they stopped emailing me right after I informed them through email I wasn’t satisfied with the price given, and wanted my MacBook back (as I thought it would raise). Still, for a well functioning MacBook that has a few key caps broken, a 2019 model should not be worth £13.75.

However, increases only occur where a device is found to be in better condition or higher specification than described — in this case, the condition matched the original submission.

Regarding communication, we have since located your email, which unfortunately was filtered into our spam folder, which is why there was a delay in response. We apologise for that and appreciate your patience.

While individual parts can sometimes achieve higher values when sold separately, our service includes collection, testing, processing, and resale risk, all of which are factored into the valuation provided.

Absolutely fantastic service

Absolutely fantastic service. I decided to sell my old work laptop to Macback and it was picked up promptly via their prepaid DPD courier service. The pickup was smooth and effortless and Macback have contacted me to say the money (exactly the amount they said they'd pay) will be in my account the tomorrow morning. Easy, effortless and well worth it.

Terrible service and smashed one of our Macs

We had 6 macs we upgraded. Decided to test this service with 2 of them to avoid faff of listing them somewhere. Got 2 reasonable quotes, below what we would have got selling but that was expected. A regular courier turned up on the day specified with a couple of boxes. He was just bunging the macs in without the protective packaging as wanted to get down but managed to stop him so we could package them properly. He hen was taking them without sealing the boxes until we stopped him to sellotape the tops down. Surprise surprise, when the final offer came in one of the Mac’s was reduced from £160 to £100 and the other reduced from £180 to £23!! The 1st one was because there was no keyboard or mouse but there was nowhere to submit that was info in the quote process. It made it sound like you were just submitting info for the Mac and we never intended to include accessories. The second one was because the screen was smashed!! As the Mac was literally in use and unplugged when the courier arrived we can 100% say it was not smashed when it left us. The service appears to be the equivalent of We Buy Any Car where you get a nice quote online and then the price goes down and down once you are too far along to really do much about it. They say you can reject the final offer and they will send the Maca back but as one is now smashed it does not seem worth it. Glad we only tested them with 2 of the 6. £200 out of pocket. Would not touch them again and would warn you not too either.

Firstly, regarding the damaged iMac, we want to be clear that we have opened a formal case with DPD to investigate what happened during transit. Based on your comments and the condition described prior to collection, we are treating this as a courier-related issue.

To resolve this fairly and quickly, we have agreed to honour the regraded value as if the damage had not occurred, and payment will be processed accordingly. We will then pursue the claim directly with DPD ourselves — you will not be expected to deal with that process.

In relation to the keyboard and mouse, these are required items for iMac trade-ins and are outlined within our grading criteria and during the quote process. That said, we completely take on board your feedback that this may not have been clear enough upfront, and we are reviewing how this is presented to avoid similar confusion in future.

Regarding the collection experience, this is not the standard we expect from our courier partners. Items should always be handled with care, packaged properly, and sealed before leaving the property. We appreciate you stepping in at the time, and your feedback has been passed on as part of our investigation with DPD.

We understand your comparison and concerns, but we want to reassure you that we do not intentionally reduce prices — valuations are only adjusted when there are differences in condition, specification, or, in this case, where damage has occurred in transit.

We genuinely appreciate you trialling the service with two devices and are sorry this didn’t reflect the level of service we aim to provide. Your feedback has been taken seriously and is being used to improve both our communication and courier handling processes.
