Just shocking
Just shocking. Applied for a loan using comparison website. This lots offered 5.7% I decided to go with them they offered the best rate. After applying on their website they replied that they would respond in 3 to 5 working days. After 5 days I saw nothing. Later checked my spam and saw an email that they sent immediately after their auto reply saying I wasn't accepted. I wondered why as credit rating was excellent and not in debt. How I wish I read the reviews before applying. Never again
Shocking communication
Applied for a loan, was accepted, the email received said they would sign and pay money within 3 days from signing the contract. 4 days later I call to check progress as I've heard nothing to be told I've been declined and "a letter has been sent to my address to decline" (which I haven't received). Shocking service, which has thrown the timeline of new vehicle purchase all out. That aside, I have more money in my account than the loan value, no missed payments, and a high credit score so god knows what you must need to get a loan. Shocking communication. Went to Natwest, got accepted, a better rate and paid out the same day. Absolute timewasters - avoid!
Would I use M&S Money Exchange? Erm…no.
Let’s just say I believe I was unfairly treated over a currency redemption transaction and have referred the travel money issue to an outside body. I would never use M&S Currency Exchange again.
Never again
Never again, accepted for the loan and money was paid within 3 days. Decided I no longer needed the loan so it was paid 2 days later. M & S bank somehow could not locate the money that was confirmed sent to the correct account with the correct reference for over a month. The money was eventually located in their account, yet they have charged me for their failings! I am still chasing them up for a refund of monies lost. Complaint has been raised but just sent round in circles, my next step is to now contact the financial ombudsman.
M&S sold me Czech notes that were 4 years out of date
Bought Czech Koruna from M&S Travel Money. It emerged, when we arrived in Czechia, two notes were old currency four years out of date. Complaints to M&S Travel Money, M&S Bank, M&S Retail and even the Chief Executive have just blamed each other, and they said they didn't believe we got them from M&S Travel Money.
Terrible
First time round - great
2nd time round - avoid!! They try and change the APR last minute then won’t remove the hard search from your file when you reject it.

Getting the loan jump through hoops…
Getting the loan jump through hoops paying it off worst experience ever had to put my own name to pay it off so complicated spent 3 hours explaining they do not even have a business anymore bank would not recognise it
Awful company
Awful company. Totally useless communications and impossible to get in touch with. Delaying my payments by 24hrs because your tech is useless doesn't mean ive paid late it means your tech is awful. So annoying and very poor.
They make it hard to contact them on a non routine issue.
Tried to contact them about a simple mistake they made on the amounts on an email they sent to me. Their systems are set up for their convenience, not for the customer. You cannot email them (although they will email you). They do not state on their emails to you that the email is no reply and when you reply to the email you do not get a bounce back message - so you don't know if they have received the email. The phone operator told me he could not send an email to another m&S department, asking them to confirm what he had said in an email. Was also told that I would receive no response to complaints - as M&S regarded all of this as 'feedback'.
Great experience
After applying for a loan with M &S I then saw the awful reviews and was very worried. I needn’t have been. The process was very quick and I was accepted straight away, yes with a slightly higher rate than the comparison site quoted but that was made clear to me before committing. After 24 hours I had a text to say that the agreement was complete and funds would be with me within 3 working days. They did in fact arrive in my account that same day by faster payment. Very happy and could not fault them
Applied for a loan told rate was 5.9…
Applied for a loan told rate was 5.9 apr went though all the process to be accepted at 7.9 apr as I was buying a car didn’t have time to change so went ahead what a slow process nothing online you have to call for updates no way of viewing how much you owe etc decided to pay off early as changed car and only had the loan for 8 months paid nearly £600 in interest on the total amount when I called for final balance wasn’t told this obviously wanted the most money out of me disgusting avoid at all costs
Terrible. Don’t bother.
If only I’d read the review beforehand. Absolutely terrible service. You put time into communicating with them, for them to not even read it and make up what they think your issue is. Lazy and incompetent. The fact we’re expected to trust these people with something as important as money is terrible. I could go on and on about the issues I’ve had but I’m not wasting anymore time on them. I’ll be opening a card elsewhere and transferring the funds. Do better.
M and S bank credit card is in chaos
M and S bank credit card is in chaos. Have had a reward card for over 10 years and benefited from the travel insurance. This has now been removed and on the App downgraded to a standard card but still being charged. Contacted M and S and told my card was a standard card and the agent left the chat. New agent asked again about what the benefits are now and then told it was still a reward card, but still no details of benefits. Asked again but chat disconnected after waiting for over 30 minutes. They have gone downhill completely and have no idea what they are doing.
Marks and Spencer’s Bank behaving worse…
Marks and Spencer’s Bank behaving worse than back street loansharks
This is my final letter about this disgusting bank and the way I have been treated by them, I do not know why they are allowed to tout for customers on comparison sites when they offer the deal but by the time the paperwork comes through the APR they offered you to get your interest, In my case 6.9 APR on a loan of £5000 over 4 years and by the time the paperwork came through it was 17.99, I signed my end of the Agreement at 6.9 apr £119 over 4 years and unfortunately did not check the email they sent me properly as I trusted them saying my money would be paid into my account in a couple of days, When I received the paper copy by post I could not believe they had changed the apr to 17.9 and I would be paying £143 monthly over 4 years, Unfortunately I had used the money for the purpose I had borrowed it, When you send them a review you get the reply saying if your not happy contact them and they will see what they can do, In my case I sent a Recorded next day delivery letter at a cost of £10.00 about 5 weeks ago and as of today 17/03/26 have not had a reply, I am 72 y
ears old on a tight budget and this extra £24 payment has upset everything, I will try to pay this extra money but if things get too tight I will not think twice about just not paying them anything

Disgrace of a company.
Disgrace of a company.
Request a settlement letter, 2 weeks later still not arrived. Phoned them up and it's still being dealt with by the relevent team... Wtf! Because a payment was due in three weeks they were waiting. A payment is always due when you pay monthly! Held up a mortgage application because they are beyond incompetent. I'm absolutely fuming.
Painful to Interact
Wanted to change the limit on a credit card.
I called them and the automatic voice told me to use their electronic service. I opened their app and the chat feature told me I can't increase the limit unless I confirm my personal details (which are correct) and gives me a phone number, or says I can use their website. Their website doesn't work. I call back and they make me go through security, don't confirm my details, and send me an email telling me to use their website. The instructions are wrong. The website still doesn't work.
Mildly impressed that neither their app, website, nor their phone centre can handle a simple request.
I think they are just a branch of HSBC which is heavily involved in money laundering, so their retail banking is a front really. Hence the service.
Complaint regarding 0% credit card
Complaint regarding 0% credit card. Tried to pay for a holiday on Expedia (which must be a pretty common practice here in the UK) failed payment 4 times despite success with authorisation, and then worked 1st time with my Halifax Clarity card. M&S blamed Expedia, but I’m not convinced. Especially as both cards are MasterCard. Either way, they were not willing to put into writing that I could do a balance transfer from my Clarity card onto the M&S without incurring the dreaded fee ahead of actually doing it, which made me worry. So all in all, not a great experience. I effectively have a card which I specifically got to spread out the cost of 2 holidays (which can’t be that niche!) and failed at the first hurdle. The app is also pretty slow & limited. I may be being fussy here, but should it really be that difficult to pay for a holiday?!?! Never had trouble with Expedia in any regard before now, so I’m reticent to place the blame with them.
Poor service and communication
I applied to M&S Bank over two weeks ago (around 17 days) and have still not received any acknowledgement of my application. I have had to call every three days just to chase for an update, as I urgently need the loan for a car.
Despite multiple follow‑ups, I have received no meaningful update, and I am now considering cancelling the application altogether. The level of service has been extremely poor—easily the worst I have experienced with any bank.
This has been very disappointing, and based on this experience, I would not recommend M&S Bank to anyone. I strongly advise others to stay away.
Extremely Poor
I very rarely write reviews. But after applying for a loan and hearing NOTHING back, not even an acknowledgment email I’d advise everyone else to stay clear
