I recommend Proven Data with no hesitation at all. Ideally, you want to be in a situation where you can remove the ransomware and start over from your backup, but when you aren't in that situation, as I found myself, Proven Data was a lifesaver. The criminals got in through the remote desktop protocol, disabled my malware/anti-virus, encrypted my back up, and all my drives. My IT guys instructed me to contact the hijackers, pay the ransom through bitcoin, and, IF, BIG IF, I got the decryption code, they could help. The legitimate bitcoin operator I spoke with begged me not to listen to my IT guys, stating I was robbing myself. Then I learned about the 10-12 business day lag from setting up the bank transfer, to buying bitcoin so you can transfer it. The bitcoin ATMs, located a substantial distance away, had a 24 hour daily limit well below my ransom and they were having their own issues causing a 48 hour delay in obtaining bitcoin. I was not willing to go any further on my own or with my IT folks since this wasn't something they routinely addressed.

It was a horrible time. My IT folks said they worked with Proven Data once before in a similar situation. I contacted them. Wow! The contract was written in an understandable manner -- it clearly spelled out each party's responsibilities. I had actual phone contact with real people who were reassuring, multiple times. The best thing was not to have to deal with the criminals any further. My data was recovered! Proven Data helped follow up with information and advice on how to prevent or minimize these attacks in the future.

Yes, it sucks to pay criminals. But it sucks more that law enforcement isn't able to help or prosecute these criminals. Bottom line, I paid Proven Data far less than the ransomers requested and far less than it would have cost me to pay my IT guys, IF I received the decryption code.

I can't recommend Proven Data highly enough. My insurance adjuster has also worked with them; they have a very good reputation.

Very professional and very timely in responses. I rarely got a voicemail when I called. All of our data was recovered thanks to Proven Data.

I never thought my portable hard drive would fail on me - but it did. After searching online for hard drive repairs, Proven Data was one of the first results that came up - and it helped that they were local. I brought my hard drive into their Soho office one morning (they really should change their operating hours listed online), and received a diagnosis within two days. I expected it to be a simple and inexpensive repair , and received a complex and technical diagnosis, with a shocking four figure repair bill. I originally wanted to say no, I didn't want to spend ANYWHERE NEAR that much money, but the contents in it were priceless, and totaled as much. I expressed my sticker shock in an email to them, and received an answer that said my insurance may cover the cost of it, that I didn't know I would have. Proven Data updated me regularly on the progress of the repair, and I got back all my data in a new hard drive that arrived very quickly. So in the end, the cost of the repair was worth it.

My external hard drive was shot. Every place I took it to prior, told me it was REALLY bad and would be difficult to fix. They took care to pay attention to and salvage the files that were most important to me and made recommendations on preserving them in the future. I got most of my data recovered.
