)World Gym Bentleigh East- VIC) Worse Sauna ever
World Gym Bentleigh East- VIC. One of the worst sauna experiences I've had, and a very disappointing way of dealing with a paying member
I honestly don't remember ever using a sauna this bad. I paid almost $50 a week for a premium membership, roughly $20–25 more than the basic membership, for almost nine months. The traditional/Finnish sauna was one of the main reasons I was paying that extra money — yet for most of my membership it was either barely warm or simply nowhere near what you would reasonably expect from a sauna. This wasn't just my complaint. People were constantly complaining about it, and other members have publicly reviewed the same problem. What is most disappointing is the gym's attitude towards it: despite knowing about the problem and knowing members were complaining, they continued charging the premium price while the facility was not performing properly. To me, that shows a real disregard and lack of consideration for members who are paying for a premium service.
I raised the sauna issue with staff multiple times and was patient for months, expecting the problem to be fixed. Towards the last three or four months, it became even worse. There were occasions when the sauna was so cold that it was difficult to understand how it could reasonably be called a functioning traditional sauna.
And this isn't just my version of events. In my correspondence with the gym, they themselves acknowledged that management was aware of complaints that the sauna was “not working correctly”, that they appreciated my “patience with fixing the sauna”, and that repairs and adjustments were required, including work to the door seal.
There is an infrared sauna in the men's change room, but this is not an equivalent replacement. It is a completely different type of sauna, very small, and during busy evening periods it was often already occupied. It is also available to standard members, so I don't consider it a reasonable substitute for the traditional sauna that was part of the premium recovery facilities I was paying extra for.
Eventually I decided enough was enough and asked to cancel my membership because I was no longer willing to keep paying a premium price for a service that had not been consistently delivered to a reasonable standard.
This is where the situation became even more frustrating.
Rather than properly considering the circumstances, the gym told me I had to either find somebody to take over my membership or pay an early termination fee of around $450, representing 50% of the remaining membership balance.
I explained my position repeatedly and continued trying to resolve the matter directly. Their responses acknowledged the sauna problems and the repairs that had been required, but they still maintained that I should continue paying the remainder of the contract.
Another approximately $50 weekly payment has now been taken while this dispute is still ongoing.
For me, this is about more than $50. It's about the way a paying member is treated when a significant part of a premium service isn't being delivered properly.
I was patient. I complained. I continued paying. I gave them months to fix the problem. And when I finally decided to leave, I was met with a demand for hundreds of dollars to terminate the contract.
That is not the level of service, consideration or professionalism I expected from a gym charging almost $50 a week for a premium membership.
If you're considering joining World Gym Bentleigh East, especially on a long-term premium membership, I strongly recommend thinking twice and making sure you understand exactly what you're signing up for — particularly what happens when an important facility isn't working properly and you want to leave.
My experience was very disappointing, and based on how this situation has been handled, I would not recommend the premium membership.
