I started working as a freelance editor for Author Assists in April 2022. I have not been paid once since I started. Despite sending my invoices on time and following up with them, nothing. Eventually, in August I stopped accepting work and continue to follow up about payment. Still haven't heard a word. I think they should just be shut down. Completely unreliable and lacking in transparency. It's downright theft.
The company Author Assists has been giving me constant work since I began working for them. Some people complain that their salary/income is too low, but I figure that the lower my fee, the more work they can give me since they can charge their clients less, which they have. I am enjoying what I'm doing very much. They have been very professional in the way they have conducted business with me, so I trust them to keep their word.
Apparently, I applied to Author Assists at some point within the last year, and they only just now followed up with a complete job description and a test edit. Had I known their pay rate, I never would have inquired. It's abysmal: $2 per 350 words. Although they boast of all their "masters and PhD level" editors on their website, I think that's nonsense and don't believe a word of it. No one who has put in the money and time to earn an advanced level degree would take a job that pays such a pittance and that they are clearly overqualified for. This is nothing more than an exploitative editing mill. There are plenty of entry level jobs in proofreading and editing that pay a living wage. Apply there instead.
Without Author Assists, I cannot imagine that I could publish two articles and complete my Ph.D. course. A great job and a great cost-benefit. I have tried other service companies but they are not even close to Author Assists Service.
Fantastic work indeed by team! I am very impressed by the detailed comments and checking of numbers/tables in the journal corresponding to text, etc. I'll definitely recommend to my colleagues and workplace!
