We have had a burley Icarus stove for the last year and it is fandabydozy… easy to light and provides wonderful warmth. It took a few goes to get the know how for how to light it ( and thereafter it’s really easy) and using kiln dried logs we have very little smoke coming into the room when we open the door. . The door is easy to clean. We do it every day so no soot builds up.Fantastic! We had a friend visit who has a much older wood burner . She was amazed at our stove’s efficiency.as we need only one log every 45 minutes to hat a very large dining /sitting room extension. Thank you, Burley

I have given burley one star because that is the lowest I can give.I have exactly the same fire as mr Robert Crosbie.my fire exploded underneath,not the bulbs.I firstly contacted the company I bought the fire from,they were totally useless and un helpful.It took them a month to reply to my e-mail,only to tell me all they do is contact burley to report the problem.They said burley would contact me with information.This never happened,so after another month went by,I contacted burley by phone to report the problem.I was told a replacement would be sent to me after receiving phone confirmation shortly.This never came and realistically don’t expect one now,or need to as I have purchased a new one from b&q made by Dimplex which is superb.Think before buying direct from burley,or the company,”flames” I bought from as both have a shocking customer support team.

I've had my Burley Debdale since 2016 and it's honestly the best purchase I've ever made. I've had two slight problems with it and the customer service, in particular Mr Astley-Stone has been second to none!
I 100% recommend Burley woodburning stoves and the company.

Burley Debdale-Excellent
I’ve had the Burley Debdale for four years now. Regular chimney cleaning and clean the glass after every burn. Lights well although it doesn’t handle damp wood well, lots of smoke and sooty glass. Kin Dried logs burn beautifully and it heats the whole house. Only have to empty the ash every ten or so burns so it is efficient.

Burley Waverley.Very badly designed fire.
I bought this fire to fill my enclosed fireplace for looks only, I had no intention of using the heating facility, it arrived and I put it together, it has a top layer of real coals and when it was lit up it looked fantastic.3 weeks later and the bulbs blew, to change the bulbs you have to take off all the coals to access, 35 minutes later they are re fitted. 6 weeks later they blew again, its such a bad design that you have to take off all the coals, I contacted Burley-and asked if there was an easier way to change the bulbs, their answer.....if the bulbs keep blowing, contact your retailer, so unhelpful, I paid £349 for this fire to use for ornamental purpose, I have now binned this badly designed fire and have bought one that has a bit more thought in its making, I had only owned this for less than a year, very dissatisfied .Iwould not recommended this fire.

I have a fireball wood burner... they go well when they are up to temperature and it’s true that they are very efficient... However, I have found they are a pig to light and invariably fill our sitting room with smoke when on the latch. Customer service treat you as if you’ve never lit a fire before, which isn’t helpful. I’ve had wood burners for years and have tried every trick in the book in terms of lighting it and the majority of the time it’s a pain. We’ve had a Jotul previously, which was a brilliant stove. There is no chance I’ll buy another Burley and as soon as we are able to afford it we will replace it with the tried and tested Jotul.

Rapid warm up , cools quickly , efficient , economic to run , provides warmth beyond its size however its feedstock must be limited to very dry logs .Not easy to light requires practice , warm chimney with a newspaper burn to provide a draft before lighting . Pre installation vacuum the air ducting thoroughly about a kilo of metal shot extracted and check the air flap is screwed tight to the body otherwise the burn rate is not contollable. An efficient racehorse not a plodder needs constant attention

We're pleased to hear you find it has a rapid warm-up, cools quickly, is efficient, economical to run, and provides warmth beyond its size. These are key features we've focused on in the Debdale's design with a nominal output of 4kW and a maximum of 5.5kW fed with 1.3kg of wood per hour.
We acknowledge your comments regarding the need for very dry logs. This is indeed important for optimal performance and efficiency in all wood-burning stoves, especially catalytic models. Dry wood burns hotter and cleaner, producing less creosote and maximizing heat output.
Your advice about pre-heating the chimney with a newspaper burn to establish a draft is excellent and a common practice for many wood burners, especially in certain chimney configurations or weather conditions.
We understand your analogy of the Debdale being an "efficient racehorse" that "needs constant attention." While catalytic stoves offer significant efficiency benefits, they do require a slightly different approach to operation compared to simpler models. The attention to fuel quality and proper airflow is essential to maximize their performance.

Bought a Burley Environ Flueless fire.
Bought a Burley Environ Flueless fire.
Had a noisy pilot light from day one, customer care gave me the usual excuses such as not been serviced correctly and gas pressure is not correct. Their customer service needs to improve, as they don't want to talk to you, but email everything. Eventually sent me a new thermocoupler which i had to pay to have it installed, even though fire was under warranty. Pilot light is now a bit better, but the fire is totally useless as it won't stay on full, which ever setting you put it on, it the flame goes down, won't heat up my room, have to have central heating on when the fire is on, so it was a waste of money.
Won't be buying any more products off Burley.
My new fire comes next week from another manufacturer and the Burley Environ will be going to the local tip.

Useless customer service
Technical support arrogant, unintelligent and offer no support. Would never purchase one of their fires or recommend them ever.
Purchased a flue less gas fire Environ model, it is almost impossible to ignite, you need to lie flat on the stomach to fiddle with the controls blindly. On turning it off you confronted by the hot glass front almost singeing your eyebrows. At the time of purchase I was offered a remote ignition at an additional cost. I assumed you would not need to be a gymnast to ignite the fire. Apparently, there is a third method of to ignite the fire, which is a slide control, which is easier to operate, this is not mentioned in the company brochure or offered by their selling agent. My request was how this problem could be resolved with a modification, they refused to help just go back to the retailer. This fire is in fact in reality for someone in their eighties is not fit for purpose. Burley’s answer to the problem was to replace this month old fire and purchase a different model, it cost in excess of £500 plus installation cost. Useless customer service technically, in fact no follow up service at all, need to go on more customer service courses. Hopefully this review will alert future customers to give this company a miss, RESPONSIBILITY WHAT IS THAT!

We manufacture a range of Flueless fires with different control options to suit various needs. Our Environ model 4240 is available with three control options:
Manual Control: These controls are indeed located lower down on the hearth.
Total Remote Control: This offers convenient ignition and control from a distance.
High-Level Slide Control: This is specifically designed for customers who may have difficulty bending down, offering easier access.
It sounds like you were offered the remote control option at an additional cost by one of our retailers, but the high-level slide control was not mentioned.
Our brochures and website do detail the different control options, although we acknowledge that information can sometimes be missed. Our retailers are fully informed about all available options and can advise customers appropriately.
We understand your frustration with the positioning of the manual controls and the difficulty you experienced in igniting and turning off the fire. This is not the experience we want our customers to have hen the various control options. However, the other controls are higher priced and your purchase was based on cost.
Regarding your contact with our technical support apologise if you felt they were unhelpful or dismissive.
We are sorry that you feel our only solution was to suggest purchasing a different model. Our intention was to find the best long-term solution for you, and we understand that additional costs for a remote control fire are not ideal.
We value your feedback and are committed to improving our products and services and improving the service offered by the retailers of our products.
Misleading and arrogant
Misleading and arrogant. They state in their manual different jets for natural or lpg gas stereo 185 or stereo 95 for lpg they also show different log layouts depending on which gas type BUT NOWHERE DO THEY STATE YOU CANT CONVERT THE AMBIENCE. I use lpg and convert every appliance I acquire
Tech support also told me. That will teach you for buying 2nd hand. If anybody wants a natural gas burley ambience I've got one for sale!!

Hi Neil, we appreciate your feedback and want to address a misunderstanding. Our manuals do not state that our fires can be converted between natural gas and LPG, and in fact, they never have. Converting a gas appliance, especially a flueless one like the Ambience, is a process only to be undertaken by a Gas Safe Engineer. While the manual may mention different jets, several other components are gas-specific and essential for safe operation. These include the logs, burner plate, oxypilot, and size of the venturi hole. For this reason, conversion requires a complete burner assembly designed for the specific gas type along with the correct gas version of ceramic logs. We apologise if this information was unclear and our team has been advised accordingly.

We bought an Environ Flueless gas fire in December 2019 and I am having big problems with the stratification of air in our room. Due to the air vent at a low level, the temperature at floor level (where my feet are!) is 65 degrees, whereas if I raise the thermometer to a high shelf it reads 79 degrees. I would not have bought this fire had I known this would happen.

We wanted to clarify that the requirement for a 100cm² vent is not something we, as the manufacturer, have imposed. This is a mandatory requirement stipulated by Building Regulations Part J (heat-producing appliances) and Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. These regulations are in place to ensure the safe operation of gas appliances and adequate ventilation to prevent the build-up of harmful combustion byproducts, even with a highly efficient appliance like ours.
While our appliance boasts 100% efficiency in terms of converting fuel to heat, it still requires sufficient air for combustion. The ventilation ensures a constant supply of fresh air for this process and also allows for the safe expulsion of any residual combustion gases. This is crucial for the safety of your home and its occupants.
We understand that installing additional ventilation can be inconvenient, but it is a legal requirement and an essential safety measure. To minimize any potential nuisance draughts, we recommend positioning the vent at a high level within the room where possible. This can help to distribute the airflow more evenly and reduce the feeling of a direct draught.

Difficult to light
I had a 5kw fireball installed on the summer. My experience is mixed. Once going it burns well but getting started is difficult even with the door open for quite some time. Would probably not buy again

You mention that once the stove is going, it burns well, which suggests the stove itself is functioning correctly. The difficulty you're experiencing with lighting, even with the door open, often points to an issue with the flue system rather than the stove itself. Factors such as insufficient draw (caused by a poorly designed or installed flue, obstructions, or downdrafts), a cold flue, or inadequate air supply can all make lighting a stove challenging.
Have you contacted the retailer and/or the installer who fitted your Fireball, Ian? They are usually best placed to assess the installation and identify any potential flue-related issues. They can check for things like:
Flue height and diameter: Ensuring the flue is the correct height and diameter for your stove is crucial for proper draw.
Flue insulation: A well-insulated flue helps maintain a warm temperature, which improves the draft.
Chimney obstructions: Birds' nests, debris, or other blockages can significantly impede airflow.
Air supply to the room: The stove needs an adequate air supply to burn efficiently.
If you haven't already, we strongly recommend contacting your retailer and/or installer to discuss these issues, Ian. They can perform a site visit and offer tailored advice based on your specific installation.

We purchased a Burley Ambience Flueless gas stove in May 2017 and are very satisfied with it. It looks great, and provides not only an additional heat source but a very relaxing stove to sit by on a cold winter day.

Installed a 5kw Holywell and it’s epic
Installed a 5kw Holywell and it’s epic, it gets up to temp really quickly and the airwash system works really well (unlike the system on my previous stove), build quality is second to none and the devil himself would be impressed with the heat this thing kicks out.... Had an issue with an internal panel that came loose but a quick call to their customer support line resolved it.

Do NOT have one of their fluless gas…
Do NOT have one of their fluless gas fires fitted before ensuring that the fitter checks your incoming gas pressure. If the pressure is higher than Burleys max spec (which is LOWER than the maximum your gas supplier might find acceptable) they will not want to know about any problems you may have with a horrendously noisy pilot light.
Burley have designed fires which require an incoming gas pressure which might well be lower than the nationally acceptable maximum (UNBELIEVABLE). If this happens to you your gas supplier will be very reluctant to lower it on he grounds that this might cause problems with other appliances, such as your boiler.
I am in this situation and no one is interested in my problem, not Burley, not the retailer, not the fitter, nor Cadent,
