A Breakdown of Why Edmentum Is Horrendous

I have written a ragebait review giving 5 stars regarding Edmentum in the past, but if I were to be honest, I would give it a 0 if I could. It’s a horrendous learning site, and here are my reasons as to why I believe so.

Now, the reviews on Trustpilot for Edmentum are mainly 1-star and 5-star reviews, with very few reviews in between. All 1-star reviews mainly focus on the downsides of using Edmentum, but when it comes to the 5-star reviews, almost all of them seem to be ragebait, as they mention absurd things such as becoming rich because of Edmentum’s supposed “knowledge-inducing” capability, gaining “brain-cells,” and some other reviews regarding “cockroaches in my walls,” a red flag that the review is satire, so most 5-star reviews are people who dislike Edmentum while being satirical. Nearly all reviews for this supposed “learning site” show hate for Edmentum, whether they’re directly stating it or being satirical about it.

I had first used Edmentum in Elementary and I still use it to this day. The lessons are, as fittingly described by another user, “glorified slideshows”. Every lesson is in a 20-40 slide format, and are completely text based. Students are tasked to read several blocks of text for the “tutorial,” which is not only less convenient than a video-based format with summarized information, but the lessons are also too vague and advanced. I recall being back in third grade when I first used it. I received a lesson about acute and obtuse angles. I did not understand a single word, but as soon as my teacher gave a brief explanation, I was a know-it-all. If a teacher performs better than a software designed to replace teachers, it really shows a lot about Edmentum. My district requiring us to complete 80 minutes of Exact Path per week doesn’t exactly “help,” either, as the lessons are very unengaging and take up precious class time. I only learned a single thing when using Edmentum, which was Volume. Otherwise, Edmentum is just a time waster which costs the district money with little to no educational value.

I asked a few students and teachers about their opinion on Edmentum. All students and almost all teachers said they either dislike Edmentum or think it wastes time. Funnily enough, I once wrote about how I dislike Edmentum, and a teacher saw what I had written. They ended up telling me in person that they fully agree. My English teacher told me they’d prefer teaching over making us do Edmentum. A friend of mine told me that one of their teachers dislikes Edmentum. If Edmentum is universally hated, it should be bad, so I don’t get why it is still used.

Edmentum is a horrendous site. Everyone who uses it hates it, and it barely teaches anything. Its lessons are unengaging, it costs money for the district, and it wastes class time. When it comes to Trustpilot reviews, most 5-star reviews are satire, and the vast majority of remaining reviews are 1-star reviews. Therefore, Edmentum should not be used for learning, and districts need to invest more money in other material which actually has educational value.

Honestly it’s just so bad

Honestly it’s just so bad. The tutorials give you explanations that barely explain anything. Then, when you fail a progress check, they give you the same information expecting you to understand it again. This creates a repititive experience and a loop of failing. They also give you the same lesson until you complete it. And then once in a blue moon they give you a new lesson. It’s just so bad.

Save Yourself By Not Using Edmentum

This program sucks! It’s very repetitive, and the slide shows are so long. I genuinely loathe and dread the activities I’m required to do every other slide. Also, whenever I really need to get an assignment done, the website, luckily for me, doesn’t load! So if its purpose was to mentally drain students, congratulations. If not, PLEASE FIX IT.

Horrible learning experience. Actual danger to mental health.

DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM. "Tutorials" are 30 page slideshows that vomit information at you with little-to-no actual explanation. I have not enjoyed ANY elective or core subject course I've taken. They are completely bland, uncreative, and even sometimes biased. The quizzes often present information differently than the tutorials, and even sometimes have incorrect answers marked as correct (after I've checked multiple sources). They practically encourage students to cheat for a good grade instead of fostering a love for learning (which is also a general flaw with current education, but still). Not to mention, some activities lack instructions because of glitches and oftentimes the site will not save work entered even if it's been submitted. Ever since I started Edmentum, I have legitimately learned nothing and it has DONE nothing but burn me out and ruin my mental health. I cannot muster enough energy to normal human things because of this program. This is a business, and they do not care about their students or the quality of their education. Even my teachers hate it. I'm a freshman and have been using Edmentum for about a year. Let me tell you, it is one if not the worst online learning platforms I have ever experienced being homeschooled my entire life.

Braindeadening...

This app is feeding material to kids like dookie out of a cow's booty to grass. It has an EXTREMELY boring format. The reading and ela lessons have very unnecessary questions and ways of teaching. The math is just very boring too. Also, if you fail the progress check, it won't tell you what you missed to help, because it just reuses questions! It teaches kids NOTHING. The CEO of this app probably just feeds kids slop to get a paycheck from all the schools that pay to have it.

Edmentum sucks.

Edmentum is possibly one of the WORST educational apps I have ever used(in my opinion). I have spent at LEAST a day of my life trying to master a subject, all because the explanations make NO SENSE. As someone who has adhd, I personally hate when schools use a one size fits all approach to learning. Edmentum claims that they create a learning path based on your scores, but if I get just two or three questions wrong, it sends me back to the beginning with the same explanations that confused me in the first place. I’m currently in sixth grade and I am extremely relieved that my new school doesn’t use this obscure form of torture. Even if I don’t have do Edmentum myself anymore, I’m STILL not free from it because I have to help my little sister with her Edmentum assignments whilst trying to make her not break down crying.

The lessons are bad, the progress test was horrible

During middle school, I was assigned to get 2 proficiency trophies every week for English and math. Those lessons were repetitive and not even helpful! I barely learned anything worth knowing. I was stuck on the poetry lesson like 10 times because I did not understand anything. Anyways, I almost cried because I couldn't get my 2 trophies.
I'm so glad to never use this anymore!

Hard to navigate system, unhelpful customer service, out of date curriculums.

My opinion may be biased due to the fact I am a student but I will try to remain as impartial as possible in this review.

Some of the curriculums are ok, but most of them really aren’t. They don’t teach you the concepts you need to know before asking you about them a lot of the times and many of the simulations/articles in my courses are “inaccessible” due to the fact the curriculum has not been updated since 2019/2020. The customer service people are quite unhelpful if you call to sort out an issue, stating you need to go to your teacher and get them to fix the issue while also providing no advice in how your teacher is supposed to fix that problem, despite the fact that is LITERALLY THEIR JOB. Relating to this fact, mentor teacher who checks over all my work has made it clear their system is far from the easiest to navigate and if she is trying to fix an issue I have reported there is often little she can do.
Speaking as an online student who has been through various different systems for independent study and learning I would not go with Edmentum. It is better than maybe one other system I’ve tried, which is not saying much at all.

Hard to follow along, overwhelming, complicated, and unexplanatory

Hard to follow along. The directions are not specific and it has you doing multiple levels of Spanish instead of just one. Additionally, the explanations are 80% in tables, and not very explanatory. In general, the platform is hard to understand of just how to open things and it has you submit audio files. It asks for irrelevant personal information. Inside the mini "lessons", some of it requires you to write small essays, and when it does, they also will not be the last assignment thing that you do. It doesn't really explain everything well, it kind of just expects you to already know it. It has you doing things multiple days in a row, and once you miss one or two of them, it can be extremely hard to try and catch back up. It can be very overwhelming and stressful. I do NOT recommend using this site for learning Spanish, not only for yourself, but ESPECIALLY not for students.

Horrible

Edmentum is the worst thing you could possibly use. I am using it to take Spanish and it is HORRIBLE. It has so many confusing words, barely reviews over things from previous units, and has assignments that are just annoying, tedious, and honestly useless. I would not recommend anyone use Edmentum if they are actually trying to learn a foreign language.

From a Student's Perspective

Here is the brief list of some issues with this platform:
I've had tech people say it is buggy and does not work properly (on the teacher's end, parent's end and student's end),
There are unrealistic expectations set that can stress out students (I've struggled with juggling only four courses),
There are no holiday breaks,
It does not seem like the courses are fact-checked, and some of the courses are teaching me untrue and biased material,
Random updates that stopped me from being able to do my lessons, then changed the way everything looked.
These are some of the largest issues I've had with the platform itself.

Some good things about the platform:
It is self paced, which is definitely nice.
They've got some a neat built in page that searches for on demand careers using your interests.

Personally, I advise people to stay away from this platform and find an alternative option.
