not a team that provides the best care possible
The recent change of the PSW service providers at the Leaside retirement residence has not been a success by any measure.
Let me list some of the reasons:
• Service that is meant to be provided in the mornings with the expectation of being prior to breakfast is not delivered in a consistent manner. The PSW, when they choose to come, can be anything between 6:30 AM and 8. The reason I say choose to come it's because they only come a couple of times a week.
o Other residents that I have talked to have indicated that the skill level of the PSW is between ignorant and incompetent. Unfortunately this has been my experience too. The incompetence may be driven by either lack of training, absence of common sense, or inadequate supervision in the early stages off their deployment.
• Unfortunately the evening service, which is meant to be subsequent to supper ( at Leaside 5:00 PM) and prior to retiring for bed. It is not unusual to see PSW’s coming into the dining room at 5:00 wondering why they have no clients available to be put to bed!
o My experience has been that anytime between 6:30 PM and 9:45 PM Is when the provider will appear.
o It is also fair to say that in the last two weeks they have failed to show up completely. That is at least until yesterday, see the next comment.
o At 8:15 PM, a ‘prima donna’ waltzed into my room, busily engaged in typing a message into her cellphone, And demanded ” is there anything you need?” without making eye contact.
Note she did not knock on entry to identify her presence
She did not say hello my name is ”Sue” or any other greeting – no name given.
When her rudeness was identified she made no attempt to apologize.
• Other residents have identified to me similar/consistent to events notified above.
• In a long term care facility, where people need assistance because of a stroke, Alzheimer's, or other ailments, their choice of dress, be being dried properly after a shower, (so they don’t have to sit in damp clothes all day). Being respectful during interactions from the PSW are procedures that are reasonable to expect, based on typical service delivered thus far this is not the case.
• A failure to deliver a service, as identified above, and given that I am not the only person the that experiences the failure of delivery indicates a systemic problem. The next question that must be asked is whether the government is being billed for services that are not being provided. This is the case then this is fraud.
• Talking to some of the PSW’s who provide the service they indicate two generic concerns
o they have to cover a number of floors in a short period of time
o And they have no control as to the number of people they have to provide the service to
o This basically suggests there is no personal relationship, or experience the either party control on to improve the service. Eldery people need routines to feel comfortable.
• Given the fact that this is a new service provider, providing services with new staff to new clients it is astonishing to think that there has been no management or supervisory follow up to ensure the service being provided meets the expectations of any of the clients, the government (who is actually paying for the service) , or the institution where the services being delivered.
The brochure ParaMed: Client Information Handbook, is distinctly misleading in that it misrepresents both the type and quality of services being delivered. The service does not help people live better at their home.
There is no evidence of a highly trained team of professionals that can provide the best care possible.
