Customer Service Very Unhelpful

I made a mistake in account setup and Popular Direct customer service was extremely unhelpful. After initial account setup I was unable to log into my account due to me incorrectly inputting my phone number. Fully my fault for causing this issue. I was also was at a point in time where I did not have a recent utility bill in my name and did not have access to one. Each customer service representative told me that the only way to change my phone number was to provide a recent utility bill in my name, no exceptions. Each representative also said the only other alternative option for verifying my identity was unavailable due to an issue with their system. They said I would need to setup a utility bill in my name and then send them the document once I had paid my next bill to access my new account. Instead I went with another bank.

Do not trust this online bank with your money

I had an 18 month CD with popular direct. They are a bit cumbersome to work with, but the interest rate was great, so I took that as a trade off. All was good and I received an email maturation notice that my CD would automatically renew as the 18 months got close. There is no way (as with other banks) to select a closure when logging into your online account, it says that you have to actually call them before the due date or within 10 days after (Note that this said 10 days and did not specificy business days or calendar days). I was out of town and when I called them on the 10th calendar day after maturity to change the selection by phone, they were not available because of a bank holiday (Memorial Day 2025). So, I figured I will call them the morning after and that they would honor that given that they were closed for business on the 10th calendar day, and in fact I had all the time assumed this would be business days and I still had some time. But no, they said it was now too late and that I would need to pay an approximately $1,300 penalty to withdraw the money from my CD if I needed it before the next 18 months are over (I do need the money before then and they also lowered my interest rate quite a bit). I asked to speak to a manager and that manager took down all the information by phone to file a claim. They said that I would receive a call within 5-7 days. Nothing! A few days after that timeline, I called back only to hear that the "committee" had not made a decision and that my claim is still pending and that I would receive a call back anytime in the new few days. Needless to say it is now more than a month later and no peep from this bank that has more than 100k of my money on deposit. What horrible customer service!
Popular Direct, if you say "days" on your notice, then you need to understand that people assume "business days". If you return my call and waive the penalty to withdraw my money, then I can edit this review. Otherwise, this will be here as a warning to all. Do not deposit your money with Popular Direct.

AWFUL!!

AWFUL!!! Alli I want to do is change the phone number associated with my account so that I can have access to my money. TWO hours on the phone with them telling me that Experian is denying access for them to give me a security code which is nonsense. I Have Aura, a credit protection app, and have the ability to lock and unlock credit file at will. I've spoken directly with Experian and there is NO LOCK on my credit file with them so, what the hell is going on? Popular Direct tells me that I need to mail them a copy of my photo ID, more nonsense and inconvenience to me. Why can't Popular Direct get approval from Experian when there is no lock on my credit file???? DO NOT USE THIS BANK for ANYTHING. HUGE WASTE OF TIME.

They Set A Trap And I Fell Right In

I had a 5-year CD with Popular Direct, maturity date 9-13-2021. I received no notification that it was maturing. Popular automatically renewed it for another 5 years, at about half of the previous interest rate. As soon as I caught this - a result of filling out the FAFSA (this money will soon be needed to pay for my kid's college) - I contacted Popular in writing to request the cancellation of the CD. They said they would allow withdrawal, but with a nearly $880(!) penalty. Today I called Popular to see if I could reason with them; the only new information to emerge was a claim that Popular mailed me notification in August 2021. I received no such notification. Popular again said that to withdraw the funds, the penalty would be nearly $880. This may be legal; it may be embedded in the fine print somewhere that the CD automatically renews. But to not notify me that it's renewing, to go silent and just hope that people forget to withdraw their money, and to renew the CD for 5 years at half of the previous rate, again with no notification? That's obviously wrong.
