Nightmare Experience
This move resulted in substantial financial loss, property damage, and a complete failure of professional standards and customer support.
At the outset, we relied on representations made by Derek Ryan, acting as the company’s estimator and agent. We were provided with an estimate of approximately $9,000 for the move, based on assurances regarding scope, labor, and logistics. The final cost approached $20,000, representing more than a 100 percent increase over the original estimate. This increase was not accompanied by clear documentation, itemization, or justification sufficient to explain the variance. Based on the totality of circumstances, this appears to constitute material misrepresentation and, at minimum, a failure to provide a reasonably accurate estimate in good faith.
In addition to the excessive billing, the service itself fell well below any reasonable standard of care. We were explicitly assured that the moving crew would consist of trained, full-time employees, professionally uniformed, and experienced in handling residential moves with appropriate care. The individuals who arrived did not meet these representations. They appeared inexperienced, were not in uniform, and demonstrated a lack of basic moving competency throughout the process. Their inefficiency directly increased billable hours while also contributing to significant and preventable property damage.
The company also failed to take reasonable precautions to protect our home. Despite assurances that protective measures would be implemented, no adequate steps were taken. As a result, drywall was damaged, hardwood floors were scraped, and doorways were repeatedly struck during the move. These damages were caused by improper handling techniques and a lack of coordination among crew members.
Our personal property suffered extensive damage as well. Items were inadequately wrapped, improperly transported, and in multiple cases dropped or crushed due to improper stacking. High-value items from recognized retailers, including Crate & Barrel and Arhaus, were significantly damaged. Specific examples include a concrete table that was dropped and cracked in half, a Gardyn system that was dropped and shattered, upholstered furniture that was permanently deformed due to improper stacking, and outdoor furniture with broken joints and structural damage. Additionally, numerous decorative and seasonal items were destroyed due to careless packing practices. Hardware and essential components for multiple pieces of furniture were lost, rendering those items unusable.
We estimate the total value of damaged or destroyed property to be approximately $50,000.
We raised concerns during the move as these issues occurred. However, our concerns were dismissed or ignored by the crew. Attempts to contact Derek Ryan during the move were unsuccessful, with calls going unanswered and messages receiving no response. We were not provided with any meaningful escalation path, supervisory contact, or access to customer support during or immediately after the service.
The storage component of the service was also materially misrepresented. We were informed that stable and competitive storage rates had been secured. In practice, our belongings were distributed across multiple storage units in different buildings due to lack of availability. Several units were located on upper floors, requiring navigation through secured access points and elevators, significantly increasing labor time and cost. These inefficiencies were billed to us. Additionally, storage pricing increased from $109 in the first month to $390 thereafter, contradicting prior representations of stable pricing and resulting in unexpected financial burden.
Although we purchased coverage for our belongings, the claims process has been unreasonably slow and unresponsive. After submission of our claim, communication from the company has been minimal to nonexistent. There has been no meaningful effort to investigate, resolve, or compensate for the damages incurred.
Based on the above, the company’s conduct appears to reflect:
* Material misrepresentation in pricing and service scope
* Failure to exercise reasonable care in handling property
* Negligent performance resulting in significant property damage
* Unjustified cost escalation and billing practices
* Failure to provide adequate customer support or dispute resolution
* Potentially deceptive practices in storage pricing and logistics
