Poor Customer Service Etiquette

Horrible, horrible customer service. I asked to have my reward ability restored, and they accused me of cheating... I don't understand this at all. The sweepstakes are free to enter via AMOE, and the wording in the e-mail was like I was a criminal! No apology, no kind explanation, and when I asked to cancel my subscription, they did nothing to keep my business! AARP needs to hire AMERICAN Customer Service Reps - this isn't discrimination at this point, the foreign reps just do NOT care!

My wife and I were members two…

My wife and I were members two different times in two different states, we never once received a magazine which is promised and when I called about it the second time we were members I was told they would start sending it. We received a newspaper once, I can get the same senior discounts without the AARP card, you're just thieves taking senior citizens money 🤑 This happened in 2016 in Wewoka, Oklahoma I believe and again when we moved to Wichita, Kansas in 2018, but I don't think we were members again until 2019. So I give you a date on the calendar you provided in the review.

this foul, dishonest, privacy invading profiteer has promised to stop sending unsolicited junk mail to this address for years, and years and years and--years. They waste your time taking you information, making promises and all that and then just spam again in a year the environment be DAMNED.

Is disgusting and dangerous. Do not ever sign up for anything with these people. they are nothing but greed, disrespect, and dishonest.

Lied to me. Dad’s been gone 3 years

My dad passed away almost three years ago and he is still getting mail from AARP. I called to have him taken off the mailing list and the lady I spoke to tried telling me he was member which he was NOT! Funny thing, how is he a member when no fees have ever been paid???? Talk about a scam and totally disrespectful to the family of those who have passed on. LIED TO ME. STAY AWAY! They don’t care.

AARP plan D 2026

I went with aarp plan D this year. Am stunned they require so many pre-auth and then seem to automatically deny them. I have not figured out how to learn the quantity of meds that may be more cost effective but learned wanting to go to 90 days instead of 30 can trigger yet another pre-auth requirement. It is exhausting trying to get needs met, and if i was my provider i would cringe when my patient chose aarp because of the nightmare pre-auths. I read aarp rating went down this year. Maybe due to pre-auth?

AARPkeeps on raising quotes each year…

AARP keeps on raising quotes each year for two reasons: each Birthday, and each year, cost of living, so they have doubled my quote, which I find to be insane. I will cancel my policy. Very unethical, they do that to seniors with fixed income!

Never again will I use AARP for any type of bookings. It took me hours to get a refund for a double booking error. They refused our refund multiple times. Finally Expedia took care of it.
Worse service I’ve ever experienced.

Enough!

I, like so many, are sick of their solicitations. Calling their so called customer service yields the script "It's a third party" Emial "unsubscribe" goes to a BOT. Both yeild you more of their solicitations.

AARP is suggesting companies that make it very very tough to cancel if you don’t want service

I’ve been a member of AARP since 2008, and recently got offered a benefit by AARP to subscribe to Purposeful by Kumanu. There was. 7 day trial, and after 5 days I decided it wasn’t for me. It has been near impossible to cancel this subscription. Google how to cancel Purposeful and it says go to account settings and choose cancel- but that option doesn’t exist. 2ndry suggestion was to send email to support at kumanu dot com, and my decision to cancel is still in limbo until ‘they review my request’.
This smells like AARP is suggesting an app just because they got financial benefit, and don’t care if it’s members get ripped off.
I an starting to question why I pay for this AARP membership- I can find companies to rip me off without paying an annual subscription to AARP for suggestions on companies ghat want to rip me off.

Member Website is completely deficient!!

AARP Member Website is completely deficient!!! Six months ago I purchased expensive dental coverage through their website and was just now trying to get ANY specific information now that I need dental services. AARP partners with Delta Dental for dental benefits. However when I logged into AARP websit with my user ID/Password I discovered that AARP provides absolutely Nothing specific to this purchase or dental benefit details specific to my dental coverage!!! I complained to superviser who confirmed that AARP provide NO information regarding this or even provide a link to Delta Dental. Useless!!!!!!

AARP needs to drop the Hartford insurance

AARP needs to get companies. For the seniors that subscribe to them. The Hartford for car insurance. Is a joke for seniors. They penalize you for not having a car. Letting car insurance go. That makes no sense at all. I just got another vechile. This year do to my other one. Being dunked last year. They refuse to offer me a policy.

I DON'T SEE A BENEFIT?

We’ve had AARP membership since May 2025, and honestly, I don’t see the point in it.

AARP promotes various “savings” with membership, including:
- The standard yearly membership price as of 2025 is $15.
- A second AARP membership is free for anyone in your household.
- AARP offers discounts on dining, travel, health and wellness products, and entertainment.
- AARP members have access to AARP-endorsed medical, auto, property, and life insurance.
- Members receive AARP The Magazine and AARP The Bulletin, which have a combined readership of 38.3 million.

However, I find that their affiliates are often beyond my budget, and we’ve been able to save much more money on insurance and other services on our own.

On January 16, 2026, I called AARP customer service to inquire about a hotel package in Vancouver, BC, or Seattle, WA, for a cruise we’re planning. Unfortunately, the options they provided were very expensive.

So, I reached out to a travel agent for the cruise line, and they offered better rates, including full transport from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the ship. Just to clarify, we don’t pay the travel agent; the cruise line does.

I also find their customer service hours to be quite limiting: Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST. While I’m over 60, I still have obligations and a life outside of their business hours.

As for the customer service agents, they are quite friendly and do their best, but the service leaves much to be desired. It seems like either they aren’t trained adequately, their systems are lacking, or there’s a high turnover rate. For me, it’s just easier to handle these matters on my own.

The "only" saving Grace, depending on how much I am charged for it, MAY BE: Tax Preparation (specifically for Senior Citizens) by people who are 40 miles away from me. So I have to drive 40 miles, each way, just to get my taxes done. Have 0 idea how much they'll charge me?

As a result, we won’t be renewing our membership, and I do not recommend AARP.

My opinion only of the services we…

My opinion only of the services we received through AARP. We have been with AARP for a few years. Within the membership timeframe, we have found it not to be as advertised. We switched our auto insurance about 2 years ago to go with AARP choice, The Hartford, as well as the dental service, Delta Dental they offered, and neither was satisfying. Recently, our vehicle broke down out of town, and there was no insurance person to speak with. I had to communicate with a chatbot who was not understanding anything I was saying. Because it was already dark & late in the evening, we ended up paying the full cost for towing the vehicle back home. When I contacted The Hartford on that following Monday, I went through several reps and chatbots. Finally, I was given an email to send the receipt to for them to decide IF they were going to refund or deny the reimbursement request for towing. I was told there is a 3-week wait period in which we will not hear from anyone to know if they received the email or not. They will send a letter at the end of the wait period only! We have never experienced anything like this before with full coverage auto insurance. Plus, I asked if something else would happen to our vehicle over another weekend, was it not a person we could speak with next time. To my surprise, the rep stated it was not, if the incident happens after their normal business hours. And with both, we never spoke to the same person, meaning you have to explain everything all over to each person. We wasted a lot of money. We are most definitely going back to what we had before.

Update: I have contacted the company several times since the first review. Each time I was given a 877 number to call, which I did. The reps were friendly. One stated she would put in a request for someone to get back with me because it had been a month. One of the other reps on a different attempt stated she didn't see the reimbursement request and would send a request in and someone will get back with me in approx. 1-2 days. My unanswered question is still, if we are paying for full coverage which towing is included, why do we have to wait to be approved to get refunded for the towing??? Today is now January 22, 2026, a month later; and waiting!

AARP claims to be politically neutral

AARP claims to be politically neutral. But if you bread their magazine you can see they are not. What really got to me is that they pushed Obamacare, used members money to lobby for it, and teamed up with insurance companies to sell supplementary insurance and raise revenue for themselves. Many of us got stuck with that lousy Obamacare and the AARP made money off of us.
