terrible experience
I honestly cannot remember having a worse experience with an insurance company.
My £2,000+ electric bike was stolen from the rear garden of my home. The garden does not have direct access to the street. The bike was secured through the frame to a fixed metal structure with the approved security lock required by the policy. The thieves CUT the lock to take the bike. I still have the broken lock and photos as evidence.
I had been paying Cycleplan for around 9 months.
When I made the claim, the experience became almost ridiculous.
First, I was told that unfortunately they would have to reject my claim because of the lock. I provided AGAIN proof that I had the correct approved lock and that the bike had been secured to an immovable object. They apologised.
Then I was told there was a problem with the Crime Reference Number and that the claim would have to be rejected. I demonstrated that the theft had been properly reported to the police and that the police had even attended my property. Again, they apologised.
Then, after all of that, I was contacted again and given another reason for rejecting the claim: although the bike was locked with the required security lock to a fixed metal structure within my private rear garden, it was not INSIDE my flat or inside a qualifying LOCKED shed/garage.
Apparently, the £70 approved security lock that they require you to use, physically attached to an immovable metal structure, was still not enough because the bike also needed to be inside an enclosed qualifying storage location while at home.
I genuinely had no idea that this was the level of restriction on theft cover when I bought the policy. Had I understood that a bike locked in my private rear garden in this way would effectively have no theft cover, I would NEVER have purchased this insurance on those terms.
And the final touch? After losing a £2,000+ bike, receiving £0 from the insurance and having paid premiums for around 9 months, I contacted them to cancel the policy because I NO LONGER HAVE A BIKE TO INSURE.
Their response? I still had to pay another £30 cancellation fee.
So, in summary: my bike was stolen, the thieves physically cut the approved lock, I lost more than £2,000, I paid them premiums for 9 months, and then I had to pay another £30 to stop insuring the bike that had been stolen.
It genuinely feels like being robbed twice.
They were very efficient when it came to selling me the insurance and taking my money. My experience when I actually needed the insurance was completely different.

Our security requirements can be found online, prior to incepting a policy with us in both the policy documents and the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID). We provide a 14 day cooling off period for you to read and review your policy documents, accepting the terms of the cover and if the cover is not suitable we can offer a full refund.
Our cancellation process is also outlined within these documents, which show the cancellation fee of up to £30.00 applies to a policy cancellation outside of the cooling off period.
We appreciate that this may not have been the outcome you were expecting, and we’re sorry for any frustration or disappointment this has caused. We always aim to provide clear and fair service to our customers.

30 pound admin fee is a joke .had to change my bike a couple months after buying it and changed my details over got 2pound refund and 30 pound charge. Disgusting if you ask me. You do all the work on line yourself so why the cost?. Scammed. Try making a claim and see the hoops thay make you go through. You'll find out you ain't quite covered....

The administration fee covers costs and expenses we incur in arranging your insurance cover. For example, those incurred in agreeing terms with the insurer, setting up the policy, creating your policy documents, regulatory costs, fees and levies. This arrangement and administration fee may vary according to the policy period, policy type and any optional additions to your cover.
