Bilateral Cataract Treatment
A standard Specsavers eye test revealed that my cataracts should be removed, and I was referred to Dr Andrew Tatham at Eye Surgery Scotland. Response was very rapid and within 3 weeks and after a very thorough and interesting consultation, I had the operation for both eyes on the same morning. I had opted for this as it is now low risk, and I am very glad to have done so; I avoided the wait for glasses for each eye separately and the period when one eye is improved and the other still in its previous state, which various friends told me is quite upsetting.
The operation was amazingly painless at all stages – yes! Totally Painless! It was a delight to be awake and seeing and feeling what was going on. The mix of fantastic technology and skill by Dr Tatham, and the smooth support team is something that still amazes me – so many generations of surgeons, pharmacologists, surgical equipment manufacturers and nurses and support staff all working at the frontiers of knowledge to make the operation fast, safe, painless and wonderfully successful. Immediately after the operation the world is uncomfortably but wondrously bright (I forgot to take the recommended dark glasses). I arrived at a little after 8 a.m., and was home by 12:30, well able to make my way through the garden (What gorgeous bright colours!) and through the front door, and move around inside and make coffee. Initially the lenses felt perfect, with clearer sight than previously with my glasses, but the follow up consultation with the excellent optometrist, Mrs Keith, revealed that a small correction would make it even better. She was absolutely right as I found when I got my varifocals 6 weeks later.
It is known to be a miracle operation, but just how miraculous is impossible to believe. Cataracts grow more opaque very slowly, and so I had no idea how bad my sight had got, nor how that was robbing me of the beauty and colour of the world around. Nor would I have believed how poor my night vision had become. Nor would I have believed that this transformation would be completely painless.
