Shocking customer service - they are very resistant to putting anything down in email or liaising by email. Over 4 weeks wasted with them not returning my emails, having explained I have no mobile phone coverage to take their calls during the day, and so requested the return of my SSD drive which triggered them to quote me nearly 4 figures for a non-guaranteed investigation. I paid for the return, and the SSD is in bits! Casing irreparably damaged, circuit board ripped out from casing and wires left detached. They have returned to me my property ripped apart with no prior warning or communication explaining. Stay clear and believe the poor reviews ahead of the positive ones.

Incredible service!
Within 45mins of reporting my issue, i had the HD in their possession and by EOD i had a full diagnosis and a solution provided at a very reasonable price for the amount of work required.

The team handling my scenario have gone above and beyond to help me at short notice and within 3 days of sending my drive in. All my data was recovered and returned to me in a downloadable link.

What can I say... we are a small independent company based in Cardiff. We also like to be as independent as possible with our IT which for the most part works out ok but recent events lead to us discovering Data Recovery Specialists. What a team! We had an IT emergency with 24 hour window and boy did they step up. Having never used them before I was nervous handing over our server but they did not disappoint. I would highly recommend giving these guys a shot if you ever need any data recovery. Thanks again.

My treatment by Fields Data Recovery was scandalous. They quoted me £695+VAT to attempt a recovery with no guarantee of success. If it was successful they would charge me an additional £195 to backup the data and dispatch it, even though I sent a brand new identical hard drive to copy the data onto.
When I politely declined the offer and asked for my hard drive back they were rude. When I offered to pay the £18 to return the item they provided me with an unsecure link to enter my bank card details. When I offered to pay by BACS they refused. We eventually agreed on a PayPal link that was so dodgy I had to lodge a concern with PayPal in case someone tried to fraudulently access my account.

When my hard drive finally arrived back it was incomplete. Literally just the inside of the hard drive with the motherboard exposed, written on with a sticker from another company stuck across the circuitry. No cover, none of the auxiliaries required to connect it with USB.

When I took the remnants of my hard drive to Curry’s to see what they could do, they told me they would likely have to source some of these parts from an identical model before they could attempt to recover my data.

Fields Data Recovery therefore sabotaged my hard drive when I wouldn’t pay their exorbitant rates for their no guarantees recovery.

You have been warned. I only hope you are reading this before you send them your hard drive. I only wish I took the time to read the other bad reviews about this company before I did.

Not to be trusted. The took over £1000, kept me waiting for two weeks then told me that they couldn't do anything. Refused to pay my money back. Very poor.

The team was able to recover all the information on my disk, 1.4 T of information, the communication was very smooth and clear. Highly recommend!

I turned to Fields Data Recovery after they assured me my damaged HDD was a “simple head misalignment” and promised a free, no-obligation quote. They made it sound easy: send the drive in, get a clear quote, and choose whether to proceed. What followed was one of the most frustrating, manipulative service experiences I’ve ever had.

The Bait-and-Switch

I was quoted between £350–£750, with the reassurance that if I declined, they’d simply send the drive back. After chasing them for days, the story changed: the cost had magically doubled to £1,200, with new excuses about the condition and pressure tactics warning me not to go elsewhere because it might make things worse.

Each phone call brought contradictions, vague answers, and delays. When I requested the data analysis in writing — a completely reasonable request — they refused, stalled, or dodged the question entirely.

Rude, Aggressive Behaviour – Even From Management

Things escalated to the point where I was in an actual swearing match with one of their management team. I was shocked. I had to defend myself just to get treated with basic respect. Only after standing my ground repeatedly did they back down and lower the cost.

So let’s be clear: if you challenge their ridiculous quote or call out the way you’re being treated, they’ll suddenly do you a “favour” and drop the price. That’s not good customer service — that’s emotional manipulation.

Free If I Delete My Review?

After I posted an honest review (the one you're probably seeing buried under all the suspicious 5-star ones), they reached out again. They offered to do the job for free — but only if I deleted my negative review or changed it to five stars.

Think about that. Not only did they overcharge and lie, they tried to buy silence to protect their online reputation. How many of the positive reviews are just people who gave in?

Poor Recovery & Conflicting Claims

Despite all this, the result wasn’t even good. They claimed a 95% recovery, but when I examined the data, it was more like 45% usable. They said they could only scan half the sectors — so how does that equal 95% integrity?

Other companies have since confirmed I probably could’ve gotten a better result elsewhere. But Fields pushed the narrative that going anywhere else would “damage the drive” further — a classic scare tactic.

Final Verdict: Avoid At All Costs

This company thrives on confusion, pressure, and intimidation. They don’t value clear communication, and their aggressive pricing tactics are designed to trap you once they have your drive. If you don’t push back, you’ll overpay. If you do push back, expect rudeness and manipulation — even from senior staff.

My advice? Take your hard drive and your sanity elsewhere. No matter how “positive” the reviews seem, read the 1-star ones carefully — they all say the same thing.

Fields Data Recovery is not to be trusted. STAY AWAY.

Update 4thOct. I received an email to remind me of the term that my item will be sent 2nd class service in 21 days. And to update my review. I was not even offered to have my item sent back sooner, even if it was at my cost. Clearly as I was not spending £720 with then, it feels like I am now an inconvenience. Had my hard drive checked and was advised it will cost me £720inc vat to have my data sent to me. I said I could not afford it and would like my hard drive back. I have not had any updates or my property back. I am very concerned as it contains old family photos.

I wish I had read some of the reviews ahead of contacting this company but the ‘bad’ reviews are conveniently buried under ‘good’ ones.
I contacted Fields on via their website and the initial online ‘calculation’ was between £250-850. Then someone called me to discuss.

Then came the response via email from *** who offered FREE Collection via DHL and provide a NO-OBLIGATION quote for recover. The email did not have the quote prices listed.

The hard drive was picked up and after they had done their initial ‘tests’ they bombarded me with phone calls and emails.

I was working so I asked on a few occasions for findings to be put in writing and I was given the run around.

The pushy sales approach, reluctance to put anything in writing, something felt off so I made sure I got a transcript of BOTH telephone conversations I had with them.

So then came ‘The good news’. ‘All the files of the Hard drive were in tact’ (he even listed the name of the files and the people ON the files) He stated. ‘They had ‘fixed the issue.’ (Why if you were only taking a look?) ‘Stabilised the disk. Managed to gain access to approximately 4TB of data’(basically all).
‘The quality was in tact. Folder/Files names had been preserved along with the data quality.’

I just needed to pay £850 plus vat or flat rate £1020 +vat if I purchased a for a new Hard Drive from them. That quote was for a limited period and would go up.

I had stated that the price was above my means and *** suggested I use paypal via instalments to cover the cost over several months.

There was a hard sell and play on my desperation to get my files returned to me. When I asked for my hard drive back *** stated that if I did not ‘take up the opportunity to use there services they would have to ‘put back’ the drive to its original state and he cannot then guarantee the files will still be there.’

I stated I could not afford the to cover the cost but would think about it.

*** then suggested I pay via paypal options. The hard sell continued and so I suggested I take a few days to either think about it or come up with the finances..

He said that if ‘we didn’t go ahead then he would ‘get it off the server’ and put it back to it’s original state’ and there are no guarantees I would be able to retrieve it again.’

A few days later I spoke with *** again and stated I would no be able to afford the costs at this time. He again stated there would be

‘No guarantee of getting the same result in the future. There may be less data. Quality affected when a drive has suffered a ‘physical issue’ and it doesn’t matter whether I go to someone else. A friend. Another company or use software myself - After they ‘put it back to it’s original state’ no guarantee they will get the same result as the first.’

***’s demeanour changed. He tried every ‘scare tactic’ in the book. I asked for my drive to be sent back and he stated it would be ‘Sent back via free, standard post. Non tracked’ I suggested that I pay for it to be tracked to ensure I actually received my HD. I paid £15+vat for it to be sent via DHL.

Yet the drive was sent back via Royal Mail Tracked 24 at a fraction of the cost - £6.65 so they even overcharged me for postage. I sent them an email asking for a refund, cc-in everyone involved and the request has been ignored.

I have since done a ton of research on this company. Wow! There are a huge amount of complaints, dating back YEARS and YEARS from numerous offices in a multitude of countries! I WOULDN’T recommend this company. The sales people just try and strong arm people into paying more. My guess is they set their ‘rate’ according to how much they think the data is worth. Surely not an ethical practice. AVOID FIELDS AND ANY SISTER COMPANIES SET UP BY THESE SCAM ARTISTS.

Fantastic service from a great company with excellent communications throughout the whole process.

Very quick and good service, if a bit pricey.

Very poor. After a previous diagnosis abroad, my hard drive only had a power issue, not a loss or corrupt data. I knew how much a service would cost. After a diagnosis, FDR called me ( didnt write) to tell me that the data had been corrupted due to a power surge. I only use the drive with my PC, there had been no power surge. They wanted me to pay £ 1700. After asking to send the drive back, they send they would return to the lab to misconfigure what they had done ???? Days later I recieved an email to ask how much I would pay for the services, I said approx £600 - there was no response. I choose another data recovery company, I've since received alll my data back, it cost mr £580 and confirmation there was no issue with the data. Charlatans. Trying to exploit peoples vulnerability around data and its importance to a company. There are better and more ethical companies out there.

As soon as they have your money they are very difficult to get a hold of. They ignore messages and give vague information about the processes that they are undertaking. They talk about how good the team of experts are and how they only take on jobs they are extremely confident with but weren't able to recover anything or give me any details of the work undertaken. I wish I'd looked into it further as the internet is littered with the same experiences.
