What a beautiful building! Me and my husband love Gerrards and definitely come for a browse every viewing day. Put a few bits in got a good price on what they where going for on eBay. Thankyou Gerrards

Waste of our time.

Sadly, after buying from Gerrards in the past, selling items seems to be a different matter. Knowing the auction climate at the moment I took great care in sending enquiries via email with all items fully photographed and information given, particularly on the original art work. I stated in my first email that we would require no reserve on any items as they were not high end. I was messaged back and informed that they would be happy to sell the items, that they were low value but you would "gladly" try and sell them for us. Both my husband and I being ill, awaiting heart operation, we journeyed to St Anne's with the items. On arriving we were treated with disdain by one receptionist and told that Gerrards "do not sell prints" I told her our visit was arranged and that these were all originals she said "pictures don't sell...we have hundreds of pictures". Again I said that we had an arrangement. A second lady then came out to see us and said that "sorry, pictures are not selling" and indicated that we should take them away I then had to get messages up to show her the agreement and she said well yes we can put them all in a job lot for you (approx 15 assorted named artists) this was unacceptable and a complete waste of our efforts and time. We ended up taking back all items brought and will not use Gerrards again. It was apparent to me that unless you are selling very high end items then you are not welcome. Our reception was frosty and there was an element of pretentiousness not seen at other auction houses. There was clearly a conflict of communication between the ones who make the decisions and those at the front desk. We will stick with larger mainstream auctioneers from now on where all are welcome.

I am sorry that you feel I have offended you in any way when you visited the saleroom recently. I can assure you that this was not my intention. I was trying to give you my honest opinion in relation to the value of the items that you brought in. We hold sales every 4 weeks and sell both expensive items and low value items. I was just trying to explain that the items you brought in were not too popular at the moment. I explained that many folk are not hanging paintings in their homes as in previous years and are looking for a more minimalistic lifestyle. We are finding that unless the artists are very well known or the art work is of a particular style ie abstract art, modern prints, nude studies etc they can be very difficult to sell. Country scenes and cottage landscapes are not selling very well. I explained I was happy to sell the paintings for you but they would have to be grouped together.
We have a vast amount of experience and knowledge of what is selling well at the moment. I explained I was more than happy to sell your items but did not want you to be disappointed if they sold for very little and then you may be unhappy with ourselves.
As already mentioned we sell a vast arrange of items for all varying prices and welcome all to to our saleroom. I have apologised personally to you for causing any offence and wish you every success selling your items, Kind regards Lizzy Cole

Over priced postage service

The postage service provided by Gerrards Auction Rooms is over priced. I was charged £27 to post a gold ring weighing 3 grams. The cost of Royal Mail special delivery, fully insured was £7.35. Gerrard’s charged £19.65 to provide the service.
Other auction house are able to provide the same service for much less cost.

Fellows auction house provides free postage!!!

I am more than happy to pay for postage and packing at a fair price but this was over priced for such a small item.

As they suggest “you are able to find an alternative postage service” but it is not until the bill arrives you are informed of the postage cost and I was too busy to start investigating alternative services.

I emailed Gerrards about the over priced postage cost but they did not respond to my emails.

I will not be buying from Gerrards in the future.

Ridiculously overpriced postage

Beware! They say that they "provide a Post and Packing service at reasonable cost." They charge £29.38 to post one inexpensive wrist watch in the UK.

Response to reply - £22 is not reasonable, other auction houses charge £8-12, & that doesn't include VAT, you don't publish that figure, and no explanation as to why you charged me more before I complained.
Do you pay your hard working packers very high wages, or just pocket the money?
I can see people have been complaining about your deceptive overcharging for years.

Dear Customer We offer an excellent postage and packing service and the majority of our customers are very happy. £22 is the minimum charge which covers postage and packing and insurance. It is a very speedy and efficient service and our packers in our in house packing room work extremely hard. Postage and safe arrival of a delicate binocular .

Via the auction house, I bought a very heavy WW2 Naval binocular 23.5kg - solid brass.
I arranged a pick-up via "Parcel Force" UK, and the firm arranged for this heavy and delicate device to be packaged, this was a source of some worry for me so I emailed the firm to emphasize packaging.
The firm did an excellent job in the packaging, heroic.
The only thing I would do differently would be to have the firm arrange the pick up rather than myself which possibly complicated things a bit.
I found the staff to be helpful and constructive especially as the size and weight of the item proved to be a challenge.
Thank you to Leighanne and to the lady who did such a great job in packaging.

Great, fast delivery in time for Christmas

Very attentive staff (thanks Maureen!) who responded efficiently and effectively to my request for immediate delivery of jewellery I bought in the 20 December sale, in time for Christmas. Jewellery in reality matches the photographs (doesn't often happen with auctions). All in all, I am a very happy first-time customer of Gerrards Auction Rooms.

Complete waste of time

Complete waste of time, offered scrap value for gold, offered today at blairgowrie, £50 for a 22ct gold diamond and sapphire ring. They advertised they wanted all types of rings and wouldn't even look at the rest of my collection of gold rings. Absolute joke

Dear Sir, Im so sorry you was left disappointed, It really wasn't our Intentions, If we offended you In anyway, then we are extremely sorry, Unfortunately some rings, are only worth the weight in gold, and the stones get knocked out, we always try to offer a decent price, and rings only weigh very small when you knock out the stones, we don't remember there being a 22ct gold ring, we always strive to offer the going rate at the gold prices each day, unfortunately a lot of Jewellery now, it goes off the weight rather than the stones, unless exceptional, We sincerely apologise if we offended you in any way, Admin Team.

Postage rates are too high to use again…

Postage rates are unfortunately too high for me to use this auction house again. Even for small items the going rate seems to be fixed at £20, but this is not apparent until you have been successful with your bid. Website mentions that they will gladly post your item, but there is a lack of info regarding prices, as I’m sure they know this would put off would be purchasers if they knew the cost. Now I appreciate that there is a bit of time and effort involved in package something up and sending it, but charging £20 postage for something that actually only cost £5.39 seems a little on the steep side to me. I unfortunately wont be using this auction house again, which is a shame as they have some good items, and for anyone who lives close enough to collect, then it’s probably a great asset. And it’s an extra £5 admin charge if you want your item sent to a different address to the billing address. Work that one out….

Hi Steven, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We always appreciate feedback. I understand your frustration that you feel our postage prices are high. Unfortunately the price of everything is increasing and although the actual cost to ship your item was lower than charged the other costs involved are increasing more and more. We have very high overheads to enable us to offer the shipping service we offer. To name a few of the things that affect our prices that have increased this year are the packaging, utilities & national living wage. All of these have to be taken into account when offering the service we do.

successfully sorting out issues.

After an issue with packing Leighanne at Gerrards stepped into the breech and immediately refunded the cost of addressing the issue.
The ease of this was such a pleasant surprise, unfortunately most auction houses don't want to know about after sales issues.
Everything was made good through a great attitude.
