Paid £500 deposit to bid. I didn’t win but they kept my £500! Three months later still not got it back. Changed the contact I signed so couldn’t claim back though the credit card. It’s now a fee, not a deposit. Can be held for my next bid though!!!!

As a buyer, I have found Hampsons to be a great auction house. The fact that many of the cars are listed as " no reserve " means that if i am the highest bidder, I will get the car.
I have bought a number of cars via them over the past 3 years, some good, some ok, but as always, it's buyer beware. There are no guarantees given, only descriptions.
I am concerned by the number of bad reviews on this platform that appear to have little or no basis in fact, from reviewers that seem to have no track record in generally reviewing, just trying to hit this company hard.

Where is my 500£ deposit ? You still owe me my money !!! Buyers sellers please avoid at all cost

This so called company are nothing but con men and should be in jail

Scammed, Taken cars into their possession and Refused to pay out after car has sold! They incur hidden charges when you dispute/open a complaint! AVOID AVOID AVOID

(Hampsons keep flagging mine and other customers reviews to get them taken down that's how bad this company is and how dodgy they are! going on different accounts to flag your reviews under false flags)

Hamptons are a good action site, they sold my Vauxhall Cortina for a very good prise, only take £230 comision, wil be back to sell more veciles next week 👍

I purchased a Range Rover Sport through Hampson Auctions last year. Unfortunately, what followed has been one of the most frustrating customer service experiences I've ever had.

I owed Hampson an outstanding balance of £157.80, which I accepted and asked them to deduct from the proceeds after my vehicle was relisted and sold. I then expected to receive the remaining balance that was rightfully owed to me.

Instead, I spent months chasing them by email, phone and WhatsApp. I was repeatedly told that someone was "looking into it", that I'd receive a statement, or that they'd get back to me shortly. Despite countless promises, nothing seemed to happen. I was passed from one member of staff to another and had to keep making contact myself just to get an update.

The lack of communication has been appalling. It genuinely felt like they were ducking and diving my calls rather than dealing with the issue. When a company is holding your money, you shouldn't have to spend months chasing what's owed to you.

If you're considering buying or selling through Hampson Auctions, I'd strongly recommend thinking twice. My experience has been one of poor communication, delays, and a complete lack of urgency in resolving a straightforward payment issue.

Do not trust this company. Do your research first.

I had exactly the same experience last year but thankfully my losses were not as large as others.i had my car advertised locally for a few weeks then I received a call from hampsons sales team saying they had experience in selling my type of car etc ,I told them I wanted a reserve set at 6k and they guaranteed it would exceed that figure and not to worry, the auctioneer knew where it needed to be , low and behold it reached 3500 ,I tried to contact them so I could collect the car but total radio silence, they then said it had been sold and collected, to my horror they turned nasty and threatened to go legal on me, I had to back down and accepted the money , they were very jekyll and Hyde, all nice until they sign you up ,this company is a horror story please don't fall into the same trap as I did .

Hampsons Auctions keep flagging negative reviews as ‘harmful’ to their company, but they have deceived hundreds of people out of bidding deposits, charges, fees, even payments for actual sales of vehicles. They are also not checking cars before selling.
They are obviously in financial difficulty as they are avoiding and ignoring phone calls, messages and emails, and lying directly to people when they do actually manage to get a response.
It has been extremely stressful for my son and I who have lost/wasted a lot of money putting our cars through their auctions. They also still have documents of ours that they will not return.
We have been ‘relatively lucky’ as some have lost £1000’s. It is shocking behaviour and everyone has been treated without any respect or courtesy DO NOT BUY OR SELL WITH THIS COMPANY YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF. The director is most likely going to grab whatever he’s managed to get into the bank account these last few months.. and disappear 🤬 it is the truth. I’ve seen this exact kind of ‘company’ behaviour a few times sadly.

Tried to buy a few weeks ago, I am still waiting for the deposit to be returned

After listing my car on AutoTrader, I was contacted by Hampson Auctions via phone. The calls referenced my advert, but it wasn’t clearly explained how my details were being used or that I would be contacted in this way.

During the calls, I felt there was a strong push to sign a consignment agreement quickly. The process felt quite pressured, with limited opportunity to properly review the terms before being encouraged to proceed.

The main issue for me was the withdrawal terms. I did not fully understand how significant the costs could be if I decided to cancel shortly after signing, and the fee structure is based on a percentage of vehicle value rather than actual costs incurred. There is no cooling off period and after taking my money they are no longer interested

Overall, the experience lacked the transparency I would expect. I would advise anyone considering them to read all terms very carefully, especially around withdrawal fees, before agreeing to anything.

Very hard to use the website to bid tried a few times to register and submit bids. As worked in information technology for many years suggest that they look at their interface on auctions. Also emails that validate you code not working or website timing out needs better platform

Absolute crooks! They double charge catalogue fees and refuse to refund them.

They have a large amount of negative reviews which get taken down. And seems it's tricky getting back the deposit. Can the company debunk this?

Beware Beware
I would never recommend anyone to either buy or sell from this company. I was going to bid on a car and forced to give a five hundred pound deposit and after not buying a car they simply won’t return it

I bought a car from Hampson Auctions in March. The car has been a total disaster and very different from the car that was advertised. This was a car advertised as having extensive service history, had an MoT, enthusiast owner etc.
On collection, flat battery, neither front windows worked, covered in dirty and dust.
I reached 1.3 miles before the car broke down with a knackered gearbox. The service work I was assured had been done hadnt been done, the V5 took weeks and weeks to arrive, as did the £500 deposit I paid to bid on the auction which wasn’t deducted off my final invoice.
This company lies to sellers and buyers alike. I would never recommend them to anyone and since my negative dealings, I have discovered entire online social media groups dedicated to people who have been fleeced by them.

If you are in the market for a new car whether it’s a sports car, classic car or a modern runabout, seriously consider buying from Hampsons auctions, they have somehow managed to persuade their sellers to offer their vehicles with NO RESERVE so you as a buyer can get some absolute steal of a bargain. I don’t know any other auction where you can get a car with say a market value of £60,000 for £30,000 (plus buyers fees always read the Ts & Cs). The sellers loss is your gain as let’s face it the only way you sell at auction is if you are desperate. With the way the global economy is heading I see a very fruitful future for Hampsons and a buyers dream. Also the two guys I dealt with were as mad as a box of frogs, lots of laughs and banter throughout the buying process. Been meaning to do a review for months and finally got round to it. Thanks guys look forward to more bargains over 2026.

The auction in April 2026, I checked on several of the cars and found they were insurance write-off's, BUT in the description (bar none) do not mention about this ij their history. Going to report them to trading standards as consumers buying from trader/profeesional must be warned when a car is a insurance wrtite-off. Luckily I spotted this glaring illegal practise and did not jojn the auction.
