As a first time seller on Motorway my experience with Harvey Cooper Cars, who bought my car, couldn’t have been any more simple and straightforward.

I purchased a 2017 Audi RS7 Performance for £40,000 from Harvey Cooper Cars. What should have been an exciting purchase became an extremely disappointing experience and ultimately resulted in the purchase being agreed to be unwound and the car returned.

Before buying the car, I specifically asked about modifications and purchased it believing it was unmodified. After taking delivery, however, an independent Audi inspection and subsequent investigation identified numerous issues, including wheel spacers, incorrect wheel bolts, a welded/modified exhaust suspected of having its internal baffles removed, and multiple damaged/seized suspension level sensors.

I also discovered the fitted wheels were aftermarket. This was particularly frustrating because in the pre-sale walkaround I was told: “you’ve got the black 21 inch wheels which were an optional extra.”

None of these modifications were carried out by me. Had I known the actual modification history and condition before purchase, I simply would not have bought this particular car for £40,000.

The car was independently inspected by Audi on 8 July, only nine days after I collected it on 29 June. Among their findings, Audi recorded the front brakes as “front PSD 6mm, discs lipped, sensor just touching discs” and listed the front pads, front discs and sensor for replacement, quoting £2,548.52.

Despite this, there is now a dispute over the brakes as part of returning the vehicle. Harvey Cooper has subsequently identified heat spotting/discolouration and sought to attribute the subsequent brake condition to my use. I have never tracked the car or subjected it to abnormal use, and I dispute responsibility for this. The matter is being considered through the finance company, so I will leave them to determine that particular issue.

I also find it difficult to reconcile my experience with Harvey Cooper’s subsequent statement that the vehicle was prepared to an “exceptional standard” before sale. Readers can form their own view given the modifications and issues that were subsequently identified.

To Harvey Cooper’s credit, the purchase has ultimately been agreed to be unwound. However, getting to that point has involved inspections, extensive correspondence and a lengthy complaint process over a car I had owned for only a matter of days before significant concerns were raised.

My biggest issue is simple: the car I believed I was buying was not the car I subsequently discovered I had bought.

Had the modifications and condition subsequently identified been disclosed to me before purchase, I would not have bought the vehicle. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone buying a performance car to arrange their own independent inspection and verify any representations regarding originality or modifications before completing the purchase.

Had a fabulous experience selling my car to Harvey Cooper - sold my Audi A6 Avant through Motorway and they bought it - as soon as the deal was accepted I had an email from Nick Hall confirming their requirements and a call from Evan to arrange collection. On collection day Evan kept me informed of his journey by train status and I was impressed he turned up after breaking his toe the day before but he soldiered on! Really lovely chap. He was with us for about 45 minutes doing the required checks etc and as the car was in pristine condition, as advertised, there was no quibble on the price offered so the transaction proceeded really quickly - funds were transferred to us and to settle the finance all within about 15 minutes! Evan drove our car up to their showroom and even very kindly confirmed he got there safely and sent me a picture of the car! . I’m sure they will find it a very good home.
