Good service, not so good mattress
We bought a super king mattress from John Ryan last year. Customer experience and shipping was all great.
After we started using the mattress, it seemed to start sagging. We dismissed this at first as we thought it's settling, but we eventually contacted the company. They sent out someone to check it and they deemed it as defective.
So now we had to wait several weeks for a new mattress to arrive.
When it finally did, it smelled like a barn - much much worse than the first one. We thought it just needed some more time to air out, but it still smells 5 months later.
I also feel like the new mattress is again starting to sag in the middle.
Overall I can't recommend this brand.
EDIT:
I am not entirely sure why you are "disappointed" by my review. As I have quite clearly stated, I am not happy with the mattress itself, not your willingness or ability to make things right.
Your explanation for the cause of "sagging" has already been given to me, and was shown to not be applicable, given that the sagging occurs in the middle, "where nobody sleeps".
Additionally, the "earthy" smell you described is not at all what I have experienced with the second mattress.
I don't think it's too much to expect that a £2,000 + mattress just "works", and doesn't require multiple returns or back-and-forths with customer support.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your 3 star review. We are sorry to hear that you feel your experience with John Ryan was not as you expected.
You reported that you thought your mattress was defective on the 13th of April this year. We organised a mattress inspection by an independent company who contacted you on the 15th of April to arrange the appointment. The inspection was carried out on the 7th of May. Unfortunately, your mattress was deemed to be faulty and under our guarantee we had a new mattress made for you.
The new Artisan Naturals Super Kingsize mattress was delivered to you on the 6th of June. As can happen with a natural fibre filled mattresses, usually the lanolin in the wool, can have an earthy smell which dissipates over time. The time can vary as different batches of wool can have different concentrations of lanolin.
As we tell all of our customers, all mattresses settle where you lie the most and this is not a fault but signs that the upholstery fibres are behaving as they should. When a mattress is made, all the upholstery fibres are completely flat and level with the piping. Adding the piping and the tufts compacts the fibres and creates the domed area. As you sleep and move around on the mattress the upholstery layers soften and flatten out. As we are creatures of habit, we tend to sleep in the same position on the mattress, the upholstery layers in this area settle but leave the surrounding upholstery layers like new. This looks like the mattress has sagged or that there are raised areas on the surface of the mattress, especially in the larger sizes like kingsize and super kingsize where no one sleeps in the middle.
As a company, we have done everything possible to ensure you have a quality mattress providing you with a comfortable night's sleep and are a little disappointed that this review is your first communication that there was an issue with the replacement mattress.

As usual excellent service from John Ryan. This is the fourth mattress I have bought from them.
I ordered the Origins 1000 as I have ordered this one previously and I know it’s the correct level of firmness for me.
The surface of the mattress is different to my previous mattresses but I’m assuming it’s the same mattress, other than this slight difference?

Very helpful in talking me through the process of choosing which mattress would be the correct one. I was hesitant about buying on-line but when you read through the website and watch the videos explaining what goes into a mattress, all the different materials, the calculations used it's impressive. The mattress we choose is so comfortable, like sleeping on a cloud!

The best mattress we've ever owned – and truly exceptional service
We recently bought a zip-linked super king mattress from John Ryan, and I can confidently say it’s the best mattress we’ve ever had. It strikes the perfect balance, it's firm, supportive, yet incredibly comfortable. Sleep has honestly never felt better. I wake up rested and genuinely look forward to going to bed every night.
What really stood out, though, was the exceptional customer service. After placing a separate order for a topper, they actually called me to say they didn’t think I needed it, and advised giving the mattress a month before deciding. They cancelled the order and refunded me without hesitation. And they were absolutely right — no topper needed!
Their honesty, attention to detail, and genuine care for customer satisfaction really impressed me. Based on both product quality and the level of service I received, I would 100% recommend John Ryan. Rare to find a company that gets it so right, from start to finish.

Super comfortable mattress and great customer service.
This is the second time that we have bought a mattress from John Ryan. As before, we are very happy with the new mattress (Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000) - super comfortable and obviously well made. John Ryan really take a pride in everything they do and what they don't know about mattresses isn't worth knowing - very well informed and helpful staff and lots of info on their website too.

It is now in the least used spare room
Lured by the company's self-comparisons with Vi-Spring, we bought an Artisan Bespoke 003 superking with divan and 15 year guarantee. Yet with meticulous care and one 14st adult using it, just over 6 years later it is now in one of the least used spare rooms as it has dipped more than 6cm in one place rendering comfortable sleep impossible.
20/08/2025 - thank you for your reply. I do not understand how you can use the same tolerances as ViSpring unless you are the same company... this is the response from Julie
"For your information on settlement tolerance, we use the same settlement figures as listed on Vi Spring website.
There is nothing further that we can do with regard to this matter until you have had your own inspection carried out.

"There is no official industry standard for determining whether the settlement is excessive, as there are simply too many variables to consider. Some bed manufacturers, retailers and independent inspection companies use a measuring system based on the type of mattress fillings and the age of the product but this really isn’t based on any scientific evidence and so should only be used as a broad guideline."

Great service! Gary helped me sort out the best plan for delivery when I was working around a moving date and a bank holiday. Delivery was super slick. Mattress is gorgeous and we have never slept better!
