Such a great company, not only do they have all the best equipment for you, they have a great team that help you navigate what seems to be a sea of information. Breaking everything down, knowing what you need and at minimal stress and effort on my end. Have already ordered 3x just this month.

When they found out I was not local to the area they expeditated the service I needed and I picked up my bike within 45 mins. They had the inner tube replacement for my electric Brompton G line in stock, which was great as I had tried several local places with no luck. Nice friendly staff.

The Balfes Reigate team were great advising me on different Brompton options. Simon was super-helpful and his colleague, who himself has a Brompton, talked me through my whole commute. Amazing customer service! Thank you!

I bought a Specialized Aethos and some Wahoo Power Pedals from these guys solely due to the competitive pricing. I spent the best part of £4,500. When I received the bike it had included with it their Pre-Despatch Inspection checklist. Everything had been ticked but, as I discovered when I asked the bike mechanic I use to give it the once over, the bike was not in the state one would have expected. The Balfe mechanic had failed to loosen the faceplate on the stem and had forced the handlebars into their delivery position. This resulted in the bars being scratched. Similarly, one of the brake rotors was badly bent. I guess this could have been the delivery outfit but until it arrived with me it’s Balfe’s responsibility.
Although not the biggest issue, the bar tape was embarrassingly badly wrapped, with stray ends clearly apparent in odd places. It looked like the person who applied the bar tape had never done it before. It was that bad.
The brake levers had been set at a strange angle and one of the shifters was out of line.
One of the wheel axles and the stem cap were not properly tightened.
The wheels were tubeless ready but no valves were included.
In isolation many of these would not have justified a poor review but the two components which arrived damaged and all the superficial issues cost me additional time and money to get sorted which largely eradicated the supposed savings on the price.
The lesson for me is to buy local so if something goes wrong you can go and sort it out. I contacted Balfe and it’s taken them about three days to respond to my email. They’ve offered me a £30 voucher which doesn’t cover the cost of remediation and I’m still left with scratched bars and a rotor which has had to be straightened. A bit insulting really.
Avoid Balfe’s Bike Shop unless the price you get means you can afford to spend a bit more to sort out their incompetence.
Their reply below seems genuine until you consider I have already sent them photos of many of the issues plus a detailed breakdown of the issues identified and a copy of the invoice from the bike mechanic who sorted it out. They have my email address and phone number. I may sound cynical but if they really wanted to sort out these problems then they have more than enough information to do that.
The latest missive from Balfe is an attempt to smear and call into question the supporting evidence i have provided. These guys are getting the customer service horribly wrong. They could have easily turned this around by owning their mistakes instead of implying i’m making it up. Question for them - why would I bother? Have I got nothing better to do with my time?
