Solid Online IOP Experience

For me Charlie Health offered a very comprehensive therapy package with individual and group therapy. In my personal experience, my therapists were awesome. The therapists really come from all over the U.S so you should be able to find ones that work for you. if there's any mismatch you can always switch. I was also really fortunate to have very engaged and compassionate group members.

Overall an in-person option might perhaps be a stronger option, but Charlie Health is a solid choice.

DO NOT JOIN THIS PROGRAM

DO NOT JOIN THIS PROGRAM. I had an incredibly disturbing experience here. During a group session, one participant was clearly in crisis and crying out for help. Instead of receiving support, they were cussed out and berated by others while the staff failed to step in immediately. When I spoke up to show empathy and help them, the group turned on me and insulted me for caring. While they eventually placed the person with a crisis counselor, the overall handling of the situation was completely unacceptable. I will never return. This program desperately needs better trainers and therapists who actually know how to manage crisis situations, maintain safety, and teach basic empathy.

Charlie Health just Discharged me…

Charlie Health just Discharged me because they didn't fill out a form my Insurance sent them. Two days I ago I was informed by my Charlie Health Therapist that I had reached my limit for IOP in my state and was "flagged" for insurance reasons. I spent about an hour all together talking with my Insurance and apparently there is no limit for my policy and they simply needed a form to be filled out probably stating that I was there for substance abuse leading to Mental Health problems. I was scheduled to meet with a Psychiatrist in about a week, a month after I was admitted. When I called Charlie they kept transferring me to different departments and kept shifting the blame on my insurance. I told my discharge planner that I'm working it out, however she just discharged me. Shame on Charlie Health for a terrible experience when dealing with something fragile as addiction.

I'd agree the scripted material is nonsense and I got a lot more out of sharing my experience with the other members. Sometimes we'd just hijack the session and talk amongst ourselves for the 50 minutes.

Company is A-OK with wasting your time

We were extremely disappointed with our experience with Charlie Health.

They had us stay up late and spend almost 2 hours completing an intake assessment, only to tell us at the very end that they did not have any therapists available for the next three weeks and therefore could not accommodate us within the appropriate treatment timeframe.

What makes this even more frustrating is that Charlie Health advertises immediate availability, intake in as little as 24 hours, and says there is no waitlist. Their own website says that after the intake assessment, patients are matched with a group cohort and individual therapist.

If there was no therapist available within the necessary timeframe, that should have been determined BEFORE making us sit through a nearly two-hour intake. At the very least, we should have been told about the three-week wait before investing that much time in the process.

When someone is reaching out for mental health treatment, wasting two hours only to tell them at the end that you cannot actually provide treatment is incredibly frustrating.

Id give this 0 stars if possible.

Footnote: The individual that did our intake was very pleasant and easy to talk to, and I don't think is to blame for this experience.

2 months in and still haven’t received…

2 months in and still haven’t received a one on one therapist, I was assured I would have one last Friday and it was cancelled without notifying me, then they said they have to process a request for the therapist I need, not sure why the process wasn’t started when I enrolled, groups are not specialized to what you need, we’ve talked more about Ai than anything else and the group facilitators either talk like there just someone else from the group with just as much problems and little insight on how to cope and others seem to read of a prompt. 2 months and no specialized care meant for my diagnosis, and ERP is unheard of here

Financial promises, missing authorization, and a grievace process that failed

My experience with Charlie Health involved serious clinical, operational, billing, and grievance-process failures. Some individual staff members were courteous, and my criticism is directed at the organization and its systems.

Before enrolling, I was hesitant about cost and specifically asked what I would owe. A Charlie Health intake representative told me by text that after I paid the required $121.50, I would owe nothing further for the full program. I relied on that representation, paid, and enrolled.

Charlie Health later stated that its original estimate had been based on 27 group sessions, that my care was changed to 24 group sessions plus seven individual sessions, and that I had received a $540 hardship scholarship. I was not given a revised estimate or warned that the change could increase my responsibility. The figures are significant: $121.50 plus $540 equals $661.50, or exactly $24.50 for each of the original 27 estimated sessions. Charlie Health has not explained that calculation or produced the intake text record.

I then received a BCBS EOB assigning $2,015 to me because “PRIOR AUTH REQUIRED, NOT FOUND.” BCBS confirmed in writing that the required authorization was not obtained before the service and told the provider to submit authorization information for reconsideration. Charlie Health did not provide proof that it had corrected or appealed the denial. Instead, Patient Finance cited a Financial Agreement that appears in my portal but cannot be opened or downloaded and offered payment options.

The problems were not limited to billing. I raised formal concerns after my first IOP session regarding lost clinical time, group structure, facilitation, and whether the service delivered matched what had been represented. Charlie Health acknowledged that what I described was not its standard of care. I later submitted a separate grievance through its grievance process and received no acknowledgment, case number, follow-up, or written resolution.

When the billing and authorization dispute emerged, I repeatedly asked Charlie Health to honor the original representation, place the disputed account on hold, and protect me from additional liability while it investigated. It did not provide a timely substantive response, and I withdrew to stop further exposure. My psychiatric provider documented that the IOP had been an important part of my treatment and that its premature interruption raised continuity-of-care concerns.

The discharge document then described the reason as “poor program fit,” used conflicting discharge dates, listed one of my medications incorrectly, described generic websites as referrals, and made unsupported statements about my appropriate level of care. I refused to sign it and requested corrections.

I have now filed a formal grievance, a Missouri Attorney General complaint, and a BBB complaint. I am also requiring Charlie Health to correct and appeal the authorization-denied claim. My experience was not a minor billing misunderstanding. It was a chain of preventable organizational failures involving enrollment representations, treatment changes, authorization, grievance handling, continuity of care, and the accuracy of the discharge record.

I would not recommend enrolling until Charlie Health can provide clear written cost terms, reliable authorization handling, meaningful grievance tracking, accurate clinical documentation, and accountability when its own systems fail.

I have done the program and I can say…

I have done the program and I can say it’s a waste of time and money. It’s basic DBT skills, waiting for a while to even join your group sessions, and always “bad connections”. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve missed group because they simply wouldn’t let me in the meeting room.

I had a wonderful experience at Charlie…

I had a wonderful experience at Charlie Health! While it wasn't perfect, I do feel like it was by far the best choice for my me for my mental health (both in general and in comparison to other IOP programs available to me).

All of the facilitators I had and people I met were very kind. They have an amazing free alumni program (for continuing to have scheduled mental health or hobby related activities even after discharge). They also have very helpful need-based financial supports available.

The program could have been a little more organized in a few ways which is my only main complaint. Otherwise, I had an excellent experience.

Could be beneficial to a very specific demographic. Not the support presented.

Our family was seeking help for a 14-year-old with severe behavioral and emotional challenges. We were left with the impression that this program would provide significant support. However, we discovered that participation depended heavily on our teen’s willingness to engage. She refused to participate and ultimately withdrew herself before treatment actually began. In Washington state; parents seem to have no recourse if their children are above the age of 13 and don’t want to do counseling. Parents considering Charlie Health should understand that a teen’s buy-in is mandatory, and if they miss sessions, they can be kicked out of the program. If your child is highly resistant to treatment, make sure you understand that participation is entirely optional and very much presented that way to the teen. As parents we advocate for support, and yet, we have ultimately no say. So the demographic for Charlie Health is teens who are emotionally mature, responsible, and eager enough for treatment that they are willing to spend 10 or 11 hours a week in zoom counseling, for 9-12 weeks. What about for all the others? We were looking for a higher level of support than traditional outpatient therapy, but found that if our teen was reluctant or opposed to participating, Charlie Health was not interested in, or capable of providing services. There was, a noticeable change in optimism, support, and care once paperwork was submitted and payment arrangements made.

Thanks to whatever these people aren't doing my grandson has gotten worse since starting this program and now I'm going to have to put him inpatient.
Since starting this in 3 weeks his eating is extremely worse and he's started drinking.
This has caused more damage in 3 weeks then it was worth!!

Ineffective and over priced. Incompetent billing department.

The group therapy was not effective or professional. The facilitators just uttered platitudes and people got grouped randomly in a way that the group had so little in common that discussions were not productive for many of us. The facilitators would not even serve as competent moderators as some group members would talk for the entire session. I didn't seem like they were licensed therapists at all. Easy money IMHO.

I got a bill that was very confusing about what I was being charged for. My company's benefits pro investigated and was able to determine what I actually owed fore an invoice dated 11/27/2025 which I paid on 12/31/2025.

I left the program early after barely a month out the 9-week program. Yet I was charged the full amount despite expressing my discontent and my reasons for leaving such a sad excuse for outpatient treatment.

Despite having paid my bill, I've been repeatedly invoiced in Feb. 2026 and March. 2026, despite having proof of payment from my card recordrds.

My Benefits Pro has had to reopen the case to resolve the unjustified repeat invoicing. Their phone mostly goes to voice mail with no calls backs, as if they knew the volume of complaints that give up is not worth having decent customer service.

Probably the worst health provider and overall customer service experience I've ever had.
