That said, we’re very sorry to hear that parts of the journey felt tiring and that the border crossing between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City was frustrating. Overland travel in this region can involve long distances, and while these routes allow travellers to see the countryside and experience the region more authentically, we fully appreciate that they can be demanding, particularly on longer days.

Regarding the border crossing, we understand how stressful this experience can feel in busy conditions. While immigration procedures are controlled entirely by local border authorities and require individual passport processing, guides are expected to clearly brief guests and support them through the process. We also take note of your comment regarding the small border-related fee and will be reviewing how this is communicated and handled to avoid any confusion.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback, and for choosing our Highlights of Peru tour. We’re really pleased to hear that you found the itinerary well organised, enjoyed the local tour guides, and would be happy to travel with Lumle again – that means a lot to us.

Peru is naturally quite a demanding destination – with early starts, altitude, and packed days around Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu – so we’re glad the structure and guiding worked well overall, even if the pace felt full-on at times.

I’m genuinely sorry that:

You felt the support during health issues wasn’t what it could have been; and

The costs to make changes came across as a “hefty” extra.

On the change costs specifically: in your case, the request to postpone the holiday to a later date came after your international and domestic flights and Machu Picchu entrance tickets had already been issued. These elements are highly restricted and, once confirmed, are either non-refundable or subject to strict airline/rail/permit change fees and supplier administration charges.

We did our best to help you postpone, but the supplement you were quoted came almost entirely from:

Airline change/reissue fees

Domestic flight and rail/ticket changes

Machu Picchu permit costs and local supplier admin fees

There was no additional “penalty” from Lumle on top of this, but we absolutely understand it feels like a big extra cost when all of those restricted elements are involved. Situations like this are exactly why we always strongly recommend having comprehensive travel insurance in place that covers illness and the need to postpone or cancel where possible.

On the health support you received on tour: having reviewed the file with our Peru partner, we can see that the hotel helped you arrange medical assistance locally, and that our operations team confirmed your onward travel to Cusco and provided an oxygen tank on the bus, as recommended by the doctor. However, it’s clear that communication around this was not as joined-up or reassuring as it should have felt from your side, especially at altitude and when you were understandably worried. Even when protocols are followed in the background, if it doesn’t feel supportive and proactive to you in the moment, then we haven’t fully delivered the level of care we want our guests to experience.

We’re using your case to tighten how we communicate during on-tour health issues – particularly making sure guests always feel personally checked in on and clearly informed about what has been arranged for them, rather than having to piece it together via hotel staff.

This is not the experience we want our guests to have, especially on a tour that is designed to be one of our flagship Peru highlights holidays. Your comments are very helpful in showing us where we can improve both our on-tour welfare support and how we explain change rules and fees up front.

Thank you again for your honest, balanced review – it will be really useful for future travellers considering Peru, and we’re grateful that despite the issues you would still use Lumle again. Covering the highlights does mean more travelling (including that 4-hour arrival transfer you mentioned), but it’s the trade-off that lets you experience the country’s big-ticket sights on one itinerary.
